D4 tankfender?

CryoTech

Hey everyone! I have been wanting to make a D4 defender forever and i got to wondering. With all the to hit debuffs, with a little bit of resistance, could a D4 defender serve as a temporary tanker for a team or TF?

I have experience with a /Dark MM and a /Dark corruptor so i'm familiar with both sets just not together in the same build. So I made a build for my TankFender, and I want you to tell me if you think its even reasonable that this defender could tank, and if so look here at my build and tell me of anything you see wrong where improvements could be made. Thanks in advance! If you'll notice I even grabbed to taunt powers, try not to lol too hard

generally yes, you'll be able to tank pretty well....

take in mind that -acc will affect AV/GM's much lesser than wimpier mobs....

You'll be just fine as far as being able to survive the agro and even better than an actual tank with your big aoe heal, but you'll need to communicate well with your teammates for it to work. They need to understand that you are the center of the safe zone and they need to stay in it because mobs will readily wander off from you to beat on them if they agro from a distance.

I'd mention the anchor but we all know that playing whack-an-anchor is the favorite sport of all teams and so you'll just have to manage the dead-anchor intervals with your other tools.

I would say as a final build it looks tight. With my penchant for spamming Howling Twilight, I would take that earlier in the growing up levels. It takes a big bite out of alpha strikes. Stacking Howling Twilight with Dark Pit means you have a chance to stun foes higher than minions. A stun is almost the same as a hold in my experience.

I noticed something rather important, actually. You took Blackstar, but out of the APP you didn't end up taking Dark Consumption. On my leveling build I had taken Blackstar just for the LOL's of the group. With the End crash, though, it is EXTREMELY situational without Dark Consumption. Blackstar, pop a small blue, Dark Consumption the survivors, then reapply your toggles.

I noticed a few things you might want to try moving around/re-setting. I noticed you had purps in your build, so I assume this a "money isn't a problem" type build, something to work towards, as it were. If that's the case, you might want to look at how I reworked some of what you've got. Moved slots around and reworked some sets to gain more bonuses. I didn't remove or change any of the powers you selected, so if you use Blackstar, you'll still be without Endurance.

Here's my two cents:

You'll gain more recovery and overall accuracy, as well as more overall Endurance anyway. Having a 50 D4 myself, I know how endurance heavy it is (even with End Redux's), so every little bit will help. And to clarify the slotting on Fluffy, the reason for the "Chance" proc is that most of what he does is Debuff (TT, DN, PG), so every time he throws one of those out, it has the chance, and the Acc IO is for his overall accuracy, so it's going to affect not only his debuffing ability but his chance to land the TwiGrasp as well.

As for Fearsome Stare, I switched out the Range you put in for the Psi Proc because the range on Stare is already pretty long, and if you're not careful, even out of the box range can fear part of the next group, bringing some unwanted visitors.

Hope that gives you another way to look at what you were looking for.

P.S. I apologize for the lack of color in the Mid's. Something's wonky and it won't post unless I use "No Codes" in the settings.

If you choose your sets right you can have capped ranged defence and be nigh invincible.

Given I have done this, relatively inexpensively, Sub-200mil, it is very very very awesome. I would definitely shoot for soft capped range because you staying alive/avoiding several mezzes/etc will do a hell of alot for your team. Not to mention its sorta fun to tank multiple monsters solo ;P...

Anywho I would definitely spec out of blackstar, its a very cool looking power but not taking dark consumption instead is a pretty big mistake, you will will be much better off without it. Also, taking the presence pool will do nothing for you at all. As long as you are maintaining your debuffs the entire team will live, the AoE's in Dark blast generate plenty of agro for the Alpha, wich should never be felt as long as you open up with fearsome stare.

Here is my own build
The totals are abit off...In game my ranged defense reaches 45.29% with everything else hovering from 20-30~%
S/L Resists at 55%

Yes. More than just temporary, too.

Twilight Grasp should be loaded up with Recharge enhancements to help tank AVs, GMs, as well as certain annoyance critters like Venging Nemesis and Rularuu Eyeballs and Freakshow Sonic Bombs. Stacking damage debuffs become your main defense when things have to-hit debuff resistance, massive to-hit, or autohit.

Provoke is optional on a dark tankfender, since your teammates benefit equally from essentially all your defenses. Dark Embrace becomes optional if you drop Provoke, especially if you're not stacking it with Tough anyway.

Soul Drain gives you a damage buff comparable to Aim, with double the duration, but unfortunately a much longer recharge. Despite the recharge, I wouldn't consider Soul Drain skippable for a D4, due to the lack of Aim.

Life Drain on a D4 is highly redundant with vastly better powers you already have. If you want a "just in case" utility blast, go with Torrent, which offers a controllable 100% knockback, affects multiple enemies, and applies the same -9%/10sec stackable tohit debuff as Night Fall. If you want a "third blast", go melee with Boxing, Jump Kick, or Air Superiority -- even a temp power will work better than Life Drain for that.

Don't discount the damage on Tenebrous Tentacles. The damage is nearly as good as Night Fall, it merely ticks slower. It's also an important source of smashing damage, handy against those few enemies who resist negative energy damage. Also, range will help, since this is a power you want to make sure hits as many targets as possible. Centrioles and/or Peroxisomes will do the trick.

To answer your question Yes a D4 can act as a tank.

I have tanked successfully with no deaths an ITF with Zero melee on the teams and using Darkest Night/Tarpit/Howling Twilight to gather them up and Fearsome Stare to debuff.

I also take the Presence Pool and take Provoke and all of the group fear powers.

You can become nigh unkillable. Solo I can just stand in front of most AV's and while I can't kill them they can't hurt me much either.
