Spines/Fire and Defense
Just a question. Why farm +1's? Just for the little xtra inf? You don't have better luck with purps and it takes longer which = less runs. IMO, that is.
On a side note, i have a 50 spines/fire built for rech/def and about 4-500mil in him and was very disappointed. Currently, i'm trying to do some respecs on him to put the recipes on a diff build. Possible a Fire/Elec scrapper or Katana/Inv.
Don't take my word as gospel here, but I'm never a fan of relying on adding a lot of set bonus def to a set that has no def in it for farming mobs that can debuff your def. If you are talking about the map I think you are I'm pretty sure those guys do some def debuff. Just in general though, if the set you take has zero access to def from the actual set, then I'm more for adding HP. I think trying to get a /fire scrapper closer to 1800-2000HP would be more helpful than dedicating it to melee def.
I experienced the let down of general squishiness from my spines/fire as well. I made would day 1 of whatever issue it was that brought /fire to scrappers full of optimism. Long story short, a couple days after IOing my 50 spines/fire I rolled and spines/dark and never switched back, /dark costs money to make work, but it excels at both killing and surviving.
I went the way of /dark also, but man, 8 toggles is crazy...lol. I love the concept but scrapped him in the 30's due to end issues.
People say the game is still based around SO's, but this build in particular (spines/dark) i have a hard time seeing without the 3 endurance procs. I had 2 common end. red.'s in each toggle and 1 or 2 in my attack chain and still ran out of end by the time i hit spine burst and a couple attacks.
I just stayed away from spines because the 2ndaries i wanted didn't seem to work. (for me)
Back to the spines/fire, i was farming demons with mine for the fire resist cap. It did ok, but he shined with a fire troller or any other immobilizers. They wanted to scatter from me. He did ok at -1's but anything my level x8 was ugly.
Here's the build I use for my Spines/Fire. I originally made it for boss farming and I was able to solo very well with it, but we all know how that is. So, now I either demon farm or farm the council empire map given by Unai, both +2/8. Although, I mostly use the council empire map because demons have a lot more runners and primarily like to shoot from range.
If DSorrow is using the same council map as me, no there are no defense debuffs. So, defense actually works really well. One purple softcaps melee defense and put S/L up to around 37%.

I wouldn't actually worry about Def Debuffs. The way I'm going to play this they'll play only a tiny role because the Def is there mostly to take the alpha where the whole spawn rolls at the same time so it doesn't matter if their attacks actually hit and land a Def Debuff. I'm going to be fighting +0/+1 minions and lieutenants only so the minions will most likely be defeated by the time they'd be launching a second wave of attacks, thanks to cycling BU/FE with Throw Spines and damage auras.

I have quite a bit of experience with these sets. I changed a few things but left most of your power selections alone. It sits at 29.6% defense to S/L but does far more DPS. It's not a cheap build though so hopefully you have a rich toon to borrow from.

I personally don't like damage procs in damage auras since they only have a chance to go off every 10 seconds. Granted you have 4 in each you'll notice a difference, but if it was me, I would put them in some of your attacks instead. You can cycle through TS, SB and Ripper in less than 10 seconds. IMO you should move 3 procs over to those powers.
Also, it's a good idea to note that each tick of BA you'll lose about 10 damage upfront and about 7 from Quills.

With the new difficulty settings I wanted to try my spines/fire solo at +1/8 in one of my Council mishes I've used to farm recipes. Long story short I got owned in the first spawn :P
This is where I decided to build my spines/fire a bit more defensively. His current build has about 5% def or something like that, so making him a bit more sturdy wasn't a problem. I guessed about 30% melee Def was what I wanted so I whipped up a build and ended up with 33% Def.
Now I'm looking for other people to check my build through and point out mistakes (I literally did this build in 5 mins so it's very probable that there are bad slotting choices and stuff like that) and offer me some advice on how to build this. This character will mostly be used for two purposes: TFs in a team and decimating large numbers of relatively weak enemies solo.
If you post builds here I'd prefer about the same budget as shown in my build:
