PvP build for a beginner?

First off.. Let me say that I've never tried PvP properly before because I never liked being much more useless in PvE because of my build. Now with double builds I could try PvP and not be hindered in PvE, win-win situation!

Even though I know everyone thinks PvP is borked I guess it is worth a try. I'm looking for a build that doesn't need massive investment, after all I'd hate to have wasted money if PvP was horrible :P

The two builds I'm currently thinking of (I have one of each at 50) are MA/Regen scrapper and Sonic/Psy defender. Which of these would be better on a moderate budget? Also any sample builds would be appreciated!

Go with your MA/regen to get your feet wet. That would be a solid beginner build for SC and it doesn't need anything other than regular IOs and maybe some Frankenslotting to be plenty effective and very survivable. The blaster will take a little more finess if your new to the pvp game to stay alive, regens are much more forgivable.

My nephew comes over my house and like to play CoX. He's young, can pve decent enough. He see's me pvping and asked me what would be something he could use, I had him make a fire/reg scrapper. He got it to lvl35 the other day and then made him respec into a pvp centric build We then just Generic IO'd the thing up, Frankenslotted his attacks, and he's doing just fine in Sirens. The only real money we spent was putting Mako's procs in his attacks.

MA/Regen. As far as power picks go, try and grab everything out of MA except Thunder Kick, Cobra Strike, and Dragon's Tail (maybe can skip CAK as well) and grab everything from Regen except Resilience and the self-rez. Power pools would be Speed (Hasten/SS), Leaping, (CJ/SJ), Concealment (Stealth/Grant Invis or Invis/Phase Shift), and then for the fourth pool it's a matter of preference between Fitness (Hurdle/Health/Stamina), Fighting (Kick/Tough), and Leadership (Assault/Tactics). Go with Weapon Mastery (Web Grenade/Shuriken/Targeting Drone) or Body Mastery (Focused Acc/Laser Beam Eyes) for ancillary pool.

Get your passive accolades, Magus, and Geas, build for +HP and +rech with maybe a bit of +dam on the side.

Thanks for the advice so far... I whipped up a quick build which might suck, but I think it's a fair try. It should also give you an idea of my budget:

EDIT: Wouldn't flurry be better than shuriken in this build? If I use EC it should stun my target for two seconds which is a big enough window of time to get flurry in past the target's resistance for insane damage.

I'd get caltrops, actually i have caltrops on my MA/regen.

When the zone is full of stalkers, more then 5 or so, you don't want to be fighting something without caltrops under your feet. It only takes 1 slot, which i usually slot 1 recharge IO so it's always up when i need it.

It's also nice when a stalker goes into hibernate, or if some teammate stands still too long.

Caltrops basically makes stalkers useless, because the sharks won't do much with a lot of HP and heals.

What? Spirit Shark is a ranged AS.

I mean sure, AS hits a bit harder and is 75% unresisted but... a Spirit Shark from hide with build up is plenty of damage.

spirit shark is nothing short of a joke to non-squishys, good as AS that made me laugh

Well, it is good to everything besides Tanks. Since 90% of scrappers are /Regen, they tend to have same resists as squishys.

AS is still AS though.

Actually regens have less resists than squishies, so they tend to take more damage from sharks than anybody else in the game. But they also have more HP, so it's not that bad for them.

As far as OP, MA/regen is definitely a great beginner build.

Just some suggestions:

Regen is a very good PvP set there is no doubt about this, but it also has a downside - When it comes to just standard SO slotting regen far surpasses all other sets and is superior, but I should let you know how Regen doesnt have as much of an improvement from IOs as other sets. When IOs are brought into the equation sets like WP can exceed the power of Regen by increasing things like defense and more resistance. In other words Regens can be one of the strongest builds for PvP just keep in mind that IOs may seem as if they arent improving your build as much as they may for a WP or FA. Don't get me wrong - Regen is a fovorite of mine and my best pvp character is a regen, but I thought should let you know that the benefits of IOs on /Regen may not be as noticeable or as strong.

As far as your MA/Regen Build goes, I've never played with MA so I will comment on the /Regen only, everything looks well slotted, but slotting MoG for end mod might not be a bad idea as it can be a lifesaver when dueling Thermals.

Yea, I just figured that most Regen scrappers take tough, which equals to about 29-31% resistance, same as a squishy with DR kicked in.

Caltrops assumes:

1. All the Stalkers are idiots
2. You're standing in the same spot all the time

Neither of the above will be true in good zone PvP. Why? A Stalker will be able to AS you as you're jumping around (or grounded by something, or mezzed) and since Caltrops covers a very tiny area, that leaves them with a lot of room to move around. If you're standing in the same spot all the time, a nice little spike from some ranged toons should get you moving pretty quick. If not, you're either a complete tard, mezzed, or AFK.

In addition to these fine comments, I also take great delight (esp with Blasters)
of TP-Foe'ing them away from their Caltrops, and onto my Caltrops...

As with many PvP tactics, it doesn't always work every time, but when it does,
it gets me smiling for at least 1/2 hour afterwards... (I love /Nin)
