Starting up a new VG
I am starting up a VG in virtue Shikratia's Shirkers. Just a VG where peeps can have fun playing and chatting. When I get enough peeps, I want daily TFs(if possible) and lost of mayhem mishes, competitions like prestige contests, costume contests, ect. I know its going to start off REAL slow, so I have a few questions for those who know better than me,
1. How do I start up a base? 2. How do I make portals? 3. How would I edit? 4. Anything else I need to know? REQUIREMENTS 1. Play in SG mode at all times 2. Be on at least once a week 3. NO DRAMA BTW, any other tips? |
First, don't put your name in the VG title. Would you want someone else's name displayed next to your character's name? Neither would anyone else. Go for something that the type of player you're planning to recruit can identify with.
For example, my VG is 'Or Die Trying' because it was intended to be a PVP VG (way before lolpvp) and the plan was to repeatedly challenge the most difficult opponents we could find until we had a 50/50 win/loss ratio. We didn't want to win all our matches, because that would mean the opponents weren't worth the time it took to play against them; we wanted to win, or die trying, as long as the match was good.
Second, come up with a better reason for forming a VG. People can 'have fun playing and chatting' without a VG. What makes your VG different? During the CoV launch ODT was #2 for several months because we differentiated ourselves from the xpats by focusing on PVP. We ran missions in PVP zones, conducted PVP raids, and built our base from day 1 based on needing to defend items of power. When I rebooted the VG, I successfully recruited people by advertising it as a VG for people who want to complete ludicrously difficult tasks, like Relentless MoLRSF.
Think about what your VG is going to add to the player's experience in the game and advertise that. Stay focused on one or two activities or ideas that you can talk intelligently about if asked. This helps keep recruiting messages short, and makes people ask you questions about the areas you don't cover in recruiting messages. That's an opening for you to have a conversation about their goals and how you can help them achieve them.
Furthermore, requirements 1 and 3 are contradictory. SG mode requirements cause drama. Don't expect people to farm prestige for you; expect people to play with you and watch your dedication to farming prestige, and then maybe decide to help out. Some of the best players in all the guilds I've lead didn't contribute directly using in-game money, but indirectly by playing really well and drawing other people to them.
If you're just now getting started, take all comers and kick the ones who cause problems.
The best advice I can give is don't start a VG too soon. Go join someone else's large and established VG until you understand the ins and outs of how things work in CoX better and how to manage a group of people. The Xpats and repeat offenders are massive, so if you can learn how they do things and emulate it you've got a chance to eventually end up with a massive guild as well.
Yeah, I agree with the suggestion about the name completely. It's your VG and you can call it whatever you want, just keep in mind, a generic, cool sounding name like The Lords of Injustice is probably going to attract more casual members than a name like Shikratia's Shirkers. That name brings more questions to mind than anything - who is Shikratia? Why is his/her name so hard to pronounce? Why are they called Shirkers - do they just blow off their responsibilities all the time?

Your requirements make you look like a Prestige *****. Sounds like you just want folks to make you the prestige so you can play with the base stuff, your better off doing that yourself & be a 1 person VG & earn your own prestige.
The requirement of logging on once a week also makes it rule 4 look like its not a rule. This is Virtue, they have more Alt-itis then most servers. They have a trend to sometimes forget about a char months at a time, because they are giddy with another char for whatever reason.
YOU first need to find a group of regulars that like to hang out with you & play on your time schedule. From there form an SG ya'll can agree on, cuz honestly name you have sounds like this VG is all about you & no one else.
I run both SG & VG, my rules are based off whats best for everyone, heck the SG part of the rules was voted on by everyone, SGmode till lvl 30.
1. Have Fun,
2. Don't be a Dick, unless they prove a reason to be a dick to them.
3. SGmode till 30.
The Super Secret rule 4. Have Fun.
Only long standing members know the super secret rule 4.
So you might want to rethink your approach to things.
Side Note: -facepalm-

Costume contests seem to be conducted quite well with Despiri so perhaps chatting with her on working something out, could develop something grand.
Sure, I've got dozens. Take them with a grain of salt; like anything else, they're a slice of another person's perspective.

My advice is stick to your guns. You are probably doing fine, learning the basics and understanding how to operate a group. Play with the base editor - it is, a great tool that you can only master through practice.
For what it is worth: I found I learned a lot more, actually starting my own venture than I ever did as a member of someone else's group. So, if you really want to run a group, you have to simply delve in and give it a go. It's the best way to learn.
But have patience, these things take time. Develop your theme and your own understanding of what it is you want as time goes by. Post your findings and thoughts here and on other forums.
And don't let us, or anyone tell you what is "right or wrong" in terms of style or approach. We offer advice only. None of us know better, and how "success" is judged in these matters is all relative. Big groups, for example, don't necessarily mean "better", and most of our advice here is related to personal preference, which may, or may not match your own. Success is really judged by how much fun you are having.
And best of luck, I hope you have a ball with the project.
I started up my VG and its doing pretty well actually. NO I'm not a prestige ****. Rule #2 is so my VG doesn't die. And all of the 4 VG my toons are apart of have the first rule. So all those who thought that I would fail....I'm not. I'm actually doing quite well. I figured everything out myself, and with the leaders of the other VGs I'm apart of. So HA! I did it w/o any of your negativity. I have about 20 members too and a nice base. My next step is getting TPs for all zones and that is gonna take a min, I know the requirements. So thought I would update all of you who had nothing nice to say. But thanks for the advise!!!
It's been what...5 days?
Shikraria, please post your global name.
I want to make sure I add some notes and a star so I know you when I see you.
Mostly so I can /point and /laugh but...ummmm no but. Just so I can point & laugh.
Thanks!

Good Luck with your VG. Just try to make the VG a fun place to play. And we do love the Alts here Good luck with the whole "Log in weekly " Rule.
Actually, just as an update, i have 25 members in my group. So, I think I'm doing great. 2 weeks old and i have everything I need.

At the risk of skewing my reputation toward elitist jerk, this won't be readily apparent until you've had a few months of experience leading the group. People's attention spans vary, but I don't know anyone who plays only a single character in this game, so you need to be flexible.

It's hard to fail within the first month. You've still got the drive and ambition to go for the gold, and lots of low hanging fruit to give you a tangible feeling of achievement that you can use to rally your team.
It's harder to succeed for a whole year. Whether you'll still be playing the game, let alone running the guild, is practically a matter of chance when that much time passes in the real world and impacts your ability to maintain a presence in the game world.
Most supergroups are ultimately cults of personality, so if you take an extended vacation, you can expect to have to rebuild from the ground up unless you've got good secondary leadership that can fill your role while you're out. That mainly means socially in CoX, as in organizing events and resolving disputes between members.
20 is a very good start all things considered, but a month from now half of them will have quit or been kicked due to that 7 day rule, so never stop recruiting if you're going for the top of the prestige charts. Also, note that the prestige charts are a very, very poor indicator of success in anything beyond grinding prestige.
I'm actually doing quite well. I figured everything out myself, and with the leaders of the other VGs I'm apart of. So HA! I did it w/o any of your negativity.

Easy solution here is to coalition with a VG that already has all the porters.

3. How would I edit?
4. Anything else I need to know?
REQUIREMENTS
1. Play in SG mode at all times
2. Be on at least once a week
3. NO DRAMA
BTW, any other tips?
