AR/Ice

AR/Ice blaster, lvl 35.
Over the years done solo stuff with him, teamage, all that malarky.
At 35...I dunno, maybe I've forgotten how to play him, maybe that last respec messed him up slightly, or maybe fighting Rikti really is that bad for him.

Find myself faceplanting a heck of a lot more, and generally getting smacked around a lot.
Tried cranking the diff up to x2 with bosses, culled off the bosses after one faceplanted mission. Still feels very clunky...

Current build is this;

Just Vanilla slotted, on SOs currently at lvl 35, all green.
Anyone got any hints on how to bring a bit more verve to AR/Ice? Am I missing a few key tricks?

Are you planning on moving into sets? Or is this more for advice about power choices and slot placement rather than IO sets?

Pick up Shiver. It should seriously help.

Depending on your play style, there are no bad choices in AR.

Thinking about it: Buckshot -> Shiver -> Flamethrower or Full Auto seems like a nice combo.

More for power choice than setting (I'm always too broke )

I tend to be sceptical of non-damage powers on a damage AT, is Shiver really that awesome? This is from a totally ignorant staring point here.

I've had good experiences with both ice patch and shiver, usually in different situations.

Ice patch is a very nice "keep away from me" power. I've found it particularly helpful against bosses because it tends to stop their forward progress when they want to close to melee range. It can be a little difficult to place well if your team is moving fairly quickly, or if battles are fairly fluid in where they begin and end. It is an excellent damage mitigation tool for tight quarters or when their are corners or chokepoints, though.

In contrast, I've found shiver particularly helpful on teams with a decent tank who is perhaps in a little over their head (ie: the tank can hold aggro OK, but the ability to withstand damage is a little lacking). Shiver can make a very big difference in those kinds of situations (ie: sometimes you see that on an ITF). Shiver also helps to keep battles from wandering far from their beginning point because mobs generally just ... can't move very far. Shiver also sets up mobs for rains (ice storm, rain of fire) or PbAOEs (fire sword circle, ...) or auras (ie: tank or scrapper auras) because mobs can't move far.

Hmm, thinking about it, both playstyle and character wise, I AM playing this wrong.
I'm playing AR/Ice like an offensive juggernaught.

IC and in-game, he isn't. He's a sniper and someone who gets the enemy to go where he wants to go, when he wants to go. Ice should be capable of that, fairly easily...I've just been picking the wrong powers and, in general...doing it wrong

Many thanks for the insights guys, will have a brain pick over Mids.

Well, thats the Mk2. Look better than the first itteration? Much more aimed at controlling and then blasting the mob, rather than straight up damage, a path that was getting me killed far too often.

Get Ice patch in your build asap. On teams place it in the middle of a spawn and your like a little mini troller and while solo place it on a corner and pull to it if you're having troubles. My AR/Ice is level 50 and very well slotted so survival isn't much of an issue but regardless I usually place a patch down in front of me before I do anything else. If anything tries to close in melee range they instantly fail while I place an ignite over top of the patch and reap the rewards.

Also it sounds like you're unsure of your ability to be an offensive juggernaut........ buildup-->FA-->buckshot and/or flamethrower and you win. For bosses ice patch-->ignite and you pretty much win. Put the snipe away deal your damage in cones and aoe and there wont be many mobs left standing to attack back.

If concept isn't guiding your hand force mastery will improve survivability later on and imo is much more practical than munitions as I've never found myself lacking in offensive capability one bit with the powers already available in AR/Ice. If you play on Virtue feel free to look me up my AR/Ice loves to show off

I might try to work Cryo Freeze Ray into the build. Being able to lock down a boss with holds is handy.

True, although Surveliance for overall de-buffing is very useful too. Chocolate or...something equally tasty that I can't think of right now to weigh up >_>

Yes, cryo freeze ray is very nice and will stack with freezing touch on bosses. Ignite doesn't need an accuracy really. Burst you have WAY underslotted, beanbag you won't need with freezing touch/cryo freeze ray, and you won't be using ice sword/frozen fists much at all, its not the playstyle with AR and they aren't much enough damage IMO to be worth going in to use once you get enough recharge for burst/slug/buckshot when attacking single enemies. Here is the build i use for my AR/ICE:
