So, Skip Barb Swipe, right?

BS has terrible numbers... well, terrible DPA, anyway. On the upside, it recharges super fast and has a low end cost, but seriously, it does Brawl level DPA. So what's a typical early attack chain for Spines? Lunge > Impale > Lunge, SB whenever up, and wait for Ripper? Boxing as an early filler (taking Tough & Weave anyway)?

You got it, if you want to you slot Brawl now that it has no endurance cost and use it as a filler attack.

I'm interested in this, too. I took Air Superiority, on my baby Spines scrappers, but I'm curious what the "common wisdom" is on these boards.

Air Sup works as an opener before lunge>Impale and the knockdown mitigates damage.

Spine burst - Lunge - brawl - Lunge

Lunge at 1
Spine Burst at 2
Impale at 8

Barb Swipe - ugh, never take it. If you have to take a filler power, air superiority (or boxing) at 6 and then you can respec out of it later (or keep it) then wait for ripper at 26.

Barbed Swipe is one of (if not the) worst st attack out there...

Barb Swipe

Quote:
Cast time 2.43 seconds
* 2 * 12.51 Lethal damage over 0.60 seconds PvE only
* 18.77 Lethal damage (after 1.1 second delay) PvE only
3 * 6.26 Toxic damage over 2.10 seconds (after 0.5 second delay) (80% chance)
So, it does a total of ~56 dmg (using this formula for terminating dots, double checked vs Arcana's, sorry Werner!), with a cast time of 2.64 (ArcanaTime modified). The final DPA is ~21.2157.

Brawl deals 22.52 dmg with a cast time of 1.056 (ArcanaTime modified), for a final DPA of ~21.3257.

So, Barbed Swipe costs a power slot, has the same DPA of Brawl, costs end, and has a longer cast time (locking you out of better attacks, further hindering your DPS). What does it have over Brawl? It recharges in 1.5s instead of 2s, and it has the following slows:

Quote:
* RunSpeed, FlySpeed, SpeedJumping -0.16 for 4s
* RechargeTime -8% for 2s [Ignores Enhancements & Buffs]
* JumpHeight -16% for 4s [Ignores Enhancements & Buffs]
* +9.536s Immobilize (mag 0.33) PvE only
Yippee. If you do take it for lower levels, respec out of it later, it's absolutely worthless higher up.

Keep in mind, that vet reward powers really help at low levels, Sands of Mu (for the cone) especially.

[edit: This was meant as a response to Local_Man.]

at current, the only use for Barb Swipe is that it is insane in PvP ... remember in PvP the longer the attack animation is, the more damage it does

It's actually overrated there too. Barb swipe does about 147 damage base in PvP whereas flurry does 193 (for scrappers). Flurry does have a longer activation time but if you're going to go with something that will root you for that long, you might as well pick the power that does more damage.

Years ago I looked at Barb Swipe and I found it to be a great little attack for people leveling up until their first respec. The end cost/cast time was less than your end recovery so you could quite almost literally keep that toon attacking which to the new player could of meant less down time and more fun.

You can survive on AoE. But I encourage getting Hasten early. Barb Swipe is one of the very worst powers in the whole game.

People think Gale sucks (I love Gale personally), but Barb Swipe makes Gale look like a giant red WIN button.
