ok technical question, I'm hoping the likes of carnifax see's this :P

I am making a build for a brute, who needs to be survivable against S/L + Fire attacks.

Some Melee, Ranged and Aoe.

However I have a build I made which gives great def to S/L + Fire however the positional like ranged isn't super....

SO my question is this,

if i am attacked with ranged S/L + Fire attacks(cones too) would the defense roll be on the positional(weakest link) or the damage type(strongest link)...

Against strongest.

f/e you getting attacked with ranged s/l and your defense is:

ranged 20%
smashing 35%
lethal 40%

roll will be against the strongest : lethal 40%

I'm pretty useless at IOed builds to be honest. Lots of much better qualified people here than me to look at the build in detail. I just get confused by them mostly

But I do know that the Defense used is always the highest number you have against that attacks types. But some attacks are weird. They might do a certain damage type, but the attack types mightn't reflect the types of damage an attack does. For example Fireball does Fire & Smashing Damage, but its Attack Types are just Fire and AOE. So even if you'd capped Smashing defense it wouldn't count vs Fireball. In your example the Fire Defense would be used vs Fireball as it is higher than the AOE, the Smashing doesn't come into it in terms of defenses.

Thats super, thanks.

If i am fighting lvl 54's do you know from those defense vaules what rolls they will need to hit me if they are,

a) minion
b) luitenant
c) boss

This one is harder to work out, but i would be very grateful if anyone knows how to get me the correct figure for each.

Def values from build are

Smashing - 39.6%
Lethal - 39.6
Fire - 34.3%

OK, I'm a little out of practice on this but I'll give it a shot.

For the smash/lethal, the "chance to be hit by even minion" is 50-Defense. I don't know the proper term of art any more, "base to-hit" maybe?

So 11.4% for S/L and 15.7% for Fire.

(This number can never go below 5%. )

This then gets multiplied by an "accuracy term" having to do with level and rank. +4s are something like ... hell, gotta check the Arcanaville guide.

Ah. +4's get a 1.4 multiplier. Minions get a 1.0, lieuts get a 1.15 and bosses get 1.3 . \

So a +4 smash/lethal minion would have (11.4% * 1.4) or ... umm, 16% ish. A +4 fire boss would have (15.7% * 1.4 * 1.3).

27%-ish chance to hit you.

It is worth noting that a single small purple drops the base to-hit to the 5% floor, leaving you with roughly 7% and 9% respectively.

wow those are pretty good numbers.

I'm sure that with my res and my regen on my brute that build should walk the map easy

Oh and I have the -to Hit from Rise to the Challenge as well.

*smiles* Don't take Fulmens numbers to literally. All I think he's attempting to point out is crafting for a profit. Buy recipe "A" for "x" and sell the crafted version for "x+lots more" rinse and repeat till you have your influence for the build.

Nope. You mentioned that you now needed to make Inf for the build. Fulmens just pointed out a simple way to do that.

If you want to play the market this way, you're going to need to do some studying. Find an IO set enhancement that is going for a good price. Then see if the Recipe for that enhancement, plus salvage and crafting cost, is going for much lower than it. If so, but the recipe and salvage, make it, and list it for higher than your costs. This should get you a net increase in funds.

Oh ok, cool that sounds like a plan, ill take some time over it. Seems to work for many people, must admit i always buy the IO and list the rec, never seem to craft anything.

Maybe it's time to shop smart. :P
