Caemgen's Commission Contest
Gratz BubbaWheat & Jophiel and thanks Caemgen for running a fine contest in the spirit of giving back.

I actually picked up an extra commission from an artist with the intent of doing much the same thing. I hope you'll appreciate it as an extension of your generosity towards the forums and not me trying to steal your gig. Plus, you can actually enter this contest if you feel so inclined.
I liked the "random pick" aspect since it's open to everyone as opposed to judging short stories or funniest limerick or something. Thanks again for running it and congratulations to Bubbawheat. |
I was actually asked if this was a Pay It Forward thing in a PM... It wasn't. Personally, I believe true kindness is done just for the hell of it. That true generosity is not done because it was shown to you but just out of the goodness of your heart - freely. As such, I kind of don't buy into the Pay It Forward thing. (And, errr, if the above seems like I'm trying to make myself seem super kind or generous, I'm not. I can be as mean, greedy and whatnot as the next guy. More so on occasion. But I do have my moments...)
However, if you or anyone else is motivated by this to do something similiar, I certainly would not begrudge that one bit.
As for using the random pick - I certainly did not come up with the Guess a Number gig... Feel free to use it.
There were two potential flaws that I eventually saw that I didn't initially plan for which you should take into consideration though:
1) If you're thinking about doing a time limit on guesses like I did, some will not follow it. Whether by accident or intent. When that happens there is the question of whether to kick them out of the contest or not, whether to count that number as used or not, what to do if it goes on forever and late in the game you find someone didn't follow the rule a couple days ago... It can be cumbersome to check every guess' time against that last persons guess.
2) Late entries/strangers. Several people brought up the idea that someone coming in very late in the game and getting lucky wasn't exactly fair. I didn't wholeheartedly agree since they missed out on the early parts and thus didn't get to take as many guesses but I can see where they are coming from... And entrants who you've never seen post before is another issue. Not to say that I think I would do a contest by invite only next time but when the idea is to reward/thank/whatever the people you've been "hanging around with" having someone not from that group jump may not be what you intended.
The solution to those two "problems" are of course up to you but I would suggest that they are things you want to consider before hand... I definitely will if I do a contest this way again...
Whenever my next contest is, I think there'll be a little less randomness. Not because of those issues but rather I think I'd probably want to do something different next time. I'll definitely try to make it something everyone can enter and possibly win rather than just those skilled in drawing, or making costumes, are writing or such... but I think I'd like to see a bit more effort go into entries next time
Man, I really can ramble on, can't I???
Anyway, you can bet that I'll enter your contest whenever you have it and however you do it
Huzzah!
Gratz to Bubbawheat, and thanks Cae for putting up with my shenanigans!
