priorities in postional defense
Seriously though, where did "corp" as a shortform for "corruptor" come from? It never made any sense to me. Everyone I know uses "corr". But I digress.
but, for an AT such as a scrapper with spines/dark, what would you say would be the priority for defense? i was thinking to go with melee first and let my self heal deal with the slight lack of range defense. or, would you think i should try to get aoe, melee and range close to the same numbers? |
Ranged and AoE attacks often carry mez effects with them.
Ranged attackers can sometimes deal a LOT of damage by the time you even GET to them, especially if they fly, and you don't.
Your priorities should lay with your play styles. However, remember that every attack has, at most, one positional vector. A ranged AOE ignores ranged defense, and a melee AOE ignores melee defense; both are flagged AOE only. Therefore, it's wise to work on Melee and AOE or Ranged and AOE, if you don't plan on working al three.
That said, a Spines/Dark is usually the kind of character that likes to be in the middle of everything. I'd focus on melee before ranged.

Edit: Looking further, I've found 11 powers which are Ranged+AOE (including one of the temporary powers from the Abandoned Sewers Trial, zombie apocalypse zombies [or possibly Halloween ToT zombies, I'm not certain], and several villain groups). I haven't found any Melee+AOE or Melee+Ranged, which suggests ~0.18616% of powers with attack vectors have multiple position vectors.
Edit: 4 of those 11 powers also have Lethal_Attack, and 2 of those 4 also have Smashing_Attack. The 2 with smashing are from Axis America and 5th Column (the first I found), and the other 2 are event zonbies and Banished Pantheon

If something hits you with a ranged fire AoE attack, for example, the game checks your ranged defense, fire defense, and AoE defense, and applies the highest one.
Well, this is TopDoc we're talking about. TopDoc would respec to gain 3 points of damage per day. - Arcanaville

IIRC, the one that's easiest to actually cap is ranged regardless of powerset. Since defense gets exponentially more powerful as it approaches the soft cap, and everything has a ranged attack it'll use on you, I'd go with ranged until softcapped and then focus on smashing/lethal/energy.
AoEs in general tend to trade high damage for the ability to hit multiple targets. They also tend to have reasonably long recharge timers. Unless you're dealing with Statesman they're unlikely to be the main cause of your death - they're much more likely to take out an unwary squishy.
As a Scrapper you should go for Melee, Ranged, then AoE, in that order.
hi all, wanted to get your opinion on postional defense priorities. i know for my blasters and corps i tend to go with lots of range defense since this is a ranged character. but, for an AT such as a scrapper with spines/dark, what would you say would be the priority for defense? i was thinking to go with melee first and let my self heal deal with the slight lack of range defense. or, would you think i should try to get aoe, melee and range close to the same numbers?
RED CAP DAGGERS: if you want them red side on infinity, send a pm i have the mission to get them for dual blades.
