I was tempted to skip tremor myself. But, when I look at earth assault, I see that I'd need to wait until level 35 to get another AOE (and that's a small radius toggle), and then lvl 38 to get a "true" AOE in fissure.

Tremor is sloowww, but leveling to 38 with no AOE seems somehow ... even slower.

Besides, permadom is attained by a small percentage of players who may appear more numerous than they are because they post in unusually high numbers on the forums. For most who play, permadom is either uninteresting or unaffordable.

Tremor is a quick mitigative AoE available fairly quickly; it has a decent radius (better than ice sword circle) and makes good use of the FF proc (especially when combined with Fissure)

Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"
*Arc #95278-Gathering the Four Winds -3 step arc; challenging - 5 Ratings/3 Stars (still working out the kinks)
*Arc #177826-Lights, Camera, Scream! - 3 step arc, camp horror; try out in 1st person POV - 35 Ratings/4 Stars

Well, it's not just fliers that get hit, but people who jump as well. On squishies I'll hop around in combat (not as much as some, though) and activate powers in mid air. I can't do that reliably with Earth Assault. For you it may not be an issue, but it's something I run into often.

And so, I will leave setting out numbers for other assault sets to others so that we can "benchmark" earth assault against other assault sets.

power name: lvl 50 damage, single target DPE, single target DPA

stone spears : 52.83, 10.16, 23.54
stone mallet : 95.76, 11.23, 55.80
tremor : 58.39, 3.47,17.01
hurl boulder : 86.64, 10.16, 32.82
heavy mallet : 133.13, 11.23, 77.58
knockout blow : 207.87, 11.23, 131.23
mud pots : 10.51, 13.47, **
fissure : 61.81, 4.07, 27.54

** mud pots is a toggle, which means DPA is not a very helpful number.
Some of your numbers seem off still, Shoe. For example, your dpa computation for Stone Mallet only works if the activation time is ~1.716 (95.76 / 1.716 = 55.8). The ArcanaTime for Stone Mallet is higher than that:

ArcanaTime = ( ROUNDUP(CastTime / 0.132) + 1 ) * 0.132
ArcanaTime = ( ROUNDUP(1.6 / 0.132) + 1 ) * 0.132
ArcanaTime = ( ROUNDUP( 12.121212... ) + 1 ) * 0.132
ArcanaTime = ( 13 + 1 ) * 0.132
ArcanaTime = 14 * 0.132
ArcanaTime = 1.848

So the DPA of Stone Mallet would really be 51.8181(...). Heavy Mallet and Seismic Smash have a miscalculation somewhere, too.

If I'm not mistaken Seismic Smash is the second highest DPA attack available to doms, though it trails quite some distance behind blaze.

Heavy mallet is a decent DPA attack as well, right up there with other "good" powers from the assault sets.

The set drops like a stone (heh) after that. And unfortunately it is pretty hard to base a playstyle around 20 sec and 12 sec recharge attacks.

As highlighted in another thread, stone spears is the worst DPA attack available to doms, including primary powers. It is tied with Fossilize , but rather than applying a hold, huge -def, -fly; it can't be used when you are off the ground or when your target is off the ground... good ku though.
(and while the two powers have the same cast time Fossilize actually has a much much shorter root time).

Unfortunately hurl isn't much better.

Not to be left out Tremor is the lowest DPA PBAoE attack in the assault sets, though to be fair it does have a great secondary effect if your dom requires more control.

If you compare Fissure to the cones from other sets and really with a tiny 10ft radius and short range it may as well be a cone (plus the 10 target cap like cones) it is about middle of the pack for DPA.

That leaves mudpots and powerboost to pull the set up from pretty much the bottom of the barrel other than the one highlight being Seismic Smash (even tho the dom version was reduced to mag 3 and domination only adds mag 1 to it).

I personally had really high hopes for /earth assault when it was first anounced, but the absence of stone fist to fill in with the long recharge melee powers and the gutting of fissure has left a pretty lame taste in my mouth. Powerboost as the "utility" power also feels like somebody ran out of ideas, or just didn't give a crap anymore.

All that doom and gloom aside, the set is visually appealing and feels very smashy from the bit I've tried it. If you really don't care about numbers I think it could provide a very satisfying experience.

It works well with Ice/ ; helps to balance out 'relative speed'. It also works well with Plant/. Seeds gives you all the time you need to throw rocks as do Creepers.

Seismic allows for ST Hold stacking when used with the primary Hold. The throw in Power Boost or Domination... or both

Treat Fissure as you would a PBAoE and you should be fine; or as a small cone... it's good to have that versatility.

Mud Pots is at least better than Chilling Embrace, lol.

It's a decent soft control set; it's a decent damage set... overall it's well rounded if you play to it instead of forcing it to play to you.

IMO, of course.

I'm going to be skipping Mud Pots and probably putting Power Boost off until the 40s. I have two other Doms with Powerboost who rarely use it and Mud Pots was near useless to me in closed beta. I used Hurl Boulder quite a lot though, so I'm taking that one this time around again.

I didn't get a chance to mess with it at all in beta, but I plan on making a Fire/Earth dom because having a lava beast with two damage auras amuses me. I'd take very little from Fire and almost all of /Earth while I level, and then respeccing Mud Pots in once I get Powersink. On top of Stamina and hefty endrdx set slotting, Powersink should alleviate the endurance crunch of running Mud Pots with Hot Feet in target-rich environments. I really wanted to go with Soul Mastery instead for Soul Drain, but with Dark Consumption at 3x the recharge time of Powersink, I didn't think my blue bar would handle it well. Maybe once (if?) I get fully IO'd, I can try swapping it.

I agree that Mud Pots alone looks pretty pathetic with its low radius and high cost, but stacked with Hot Feet it should completely floor their runspeed to help keep them bundled up, and Tremor + Fissure + Ball Lightning + 2 damage auras should help clear crowds pretty quickly.

Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.
