Gah ... is there an inf cap?
The 2 billion inf cap is fairly well known at least within the market forums, but is not to my knowledge documented anywhere in game.
@Catwhoorg "Rule of Three - Finale" Arc# 1984
@Mr Falkland Islands"A Nation Goes Rogue" Arc# 2369 "Toasters and Pop Tarts" Arc#116617
common knowledge around here, but now that Cat mentions it....I guess there isn't any 'official' documentation of the fact.
Sorry about your loss. It would be helpful if you got a pop-up warning before losing a lot of $$$.

My City Was Gone
I transferred some 300 million to my main so that I could have 2 billion.
But I've still got stuff in the market for sale! I have to remember that I can't market on that toon... at least at the moment. ^_^
That does suck, though. Sorry to hear that.
At least that doesn't happen during trades. Let's say you're at 1,999,999,990 influence. I trade 500,000,000 influence to you. The trade will go through for only 10 influence, putting you at the cap and saving my extra 499,999,990 influence from flying off into the void.

You actually might get some help from the petition. They're (IMO) surprisingly willing to assist with things like this. Since it's truly undocumented anywhere I know of, it seems like a pretty good candidate for them to try to help.
Good luck with it.

As others said, I'd try my luck with getting the influence back because there is nothing ingame that actually states the influence cap.

I did try a petition ... we'll see. If they weren't willing to refund people's losses to the 60-day market timeout (which wasn't documented when it first hit), I'm not optimistic that they'll do so here. But worth a try.
I wish I'd made the discovery on a less expensive set of refunds, but oh well. I'm still probably somewhere up around 12 billion total (inf and sales) across all toons, so I suppose I can count this as an investment towards the "1 billion inf lost to bugs or errors" badge ...
Interesting, though. This means that with some of the purples now selling for 250+ mil, you could exceed the cap by claiming the inf from a single stack-of-10 sale. A sale which can never be fully redeemed. Gruesome.
(Granted, I'd imagine this is one of those problems that's likely to summon up a chorus of tiny finger-violins ... "Oh, to have such problems!")
I've had luck with one petition of this nature. I just had to send in a 2nd today Darn miscalculation.
I know another person who has succeeded with this type of petition.
make sure you throw up a bid for a lv 53 set recipe though first or if they do give the money back you still won't see it. this is a good way to store infl/inf also.
Good luck!
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

I wish you the best of luck. I've heard stories of people getting their monies back before. . . but I have no idea what the percentages are.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
I had about 1.6 billion on one of my toons, canceled 6 bid stacks worth about 250 mil each (I was experimenting with lowball purple bids), and wound up with .... exactly 2 billion inf.
Is this common knowledge, and somehow I just never stumbled across it?
I petitioned, but somehow (by analogy to the old undocumented 60-day market vacuum) I doubt I'll get any sympathy.
Really?? The market just tosses your bid refunds into the void without notice, rather than letting you know that canceling a bid will just throw the money away?
/e is severely discouraged.
