I just got myself a brand new computer today and installed CoV into it after doing its updates and all, but everytime i try and launch it it just hangs at 'checking updates' i dont get those images or anything... and im running on Vista x64 SP2

i REALLY dont know what to do

I've been trying to help him on this issue on TS, but we've come up dry so far. Things we've tried so far:

  • Disabling UAC
  • Disabling firewall (Norton)
  • Disabling virus protection (Norton)
  • Running CoH/V as Administrator
  • Forwarding required ports to Vista 64-bit computer (hardware firewall active)
  • Uninstalling/reinstalling (from CoV disc)
He is still able to connection on his old laptop running XP, but the new Vista 64-bit system is not able to get past the launcher. Running both off of the same connection.

One more thing to try. Go into the properties on the shortcut to the launcher. There is an option in there to run in XP SP2 emulation mode. Try enabling that.

There is also a command line option that corrects a problem with the cursor once the client is running. I can't remember it right off hand because I gave up on Vista long ago and rolled back to XP. If you do a search for Vista in the CoH support knowledge base, you will see it there.

also this is a small thing u can try that would take not even 5 minutes, shut ur PC down,unplugg ur power cord on ur modem, wait 30 seconds,plugg ur power cord back in,wait for all the lights to come back on then power ur PC back-up---doesnt sound like my idea is the problem but hey--what would it hurt

Are you using WindowsBlinds or a similar skinning program?
If so, it must be disabled.

My advice is to post a HiJackThis report, and let people see if there are something conflicting running.

Considering the laptop was still able to connect, I doubt that would make a different. I already suggested this however, but I don't think he's tried it.

We decided to uninstall last night & try installing using the NCSoft Launcher. It may have been possible that his CoV disc had gone corrupt/damaged & we thought we might get different results this way.

That won't be it. The CoH patcher will automatically correct any errors in corrupt files be downloading new ones from the CoH servers.

I used to have the same problem with XP a long time ago. Two things: Are you running a multi-GPU video card? if so, disable Multi-GPU mode and try it that way. For me it hangs on that screen for a bit when I'm in multi-GPU mode and once I disabled it, I was fine.

Another, back on XP, I just had to wait like.. 5-10 minutes for it to do anything. So I don't know what I did to fix that, but it fixed itself over time.

I've seen people put things on Brand New Computers that caused problems before they got the main application they usually run installed. It happens.

I've also seen enough crapware installed by OEM's to make my eyes bleed.

I've seen software that goes with the motherboard's hardware cause game problems (I'm looking at you nVidia Network Firewall, among others).

I've also seen inadvertent settings in HJT logs that had people saying "How the heck did THAT get there".

If you are going to ask for our help, please give us the information we are asking for that allows US to help YOU more efficiently. It doesn't take that long to download, install and run HJT then post the results here.

It's not like we are asking you to run a 24-hour MemTest.


If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

uno do know the "ughhh.... what?" part is about that HJT.... dont go on about everything else... i dont even know wth that thing is

also, the first thing i did when i got my computer was install CoV and then try to run, then when that failed i got everything else i used to have to my computer *steam, Teamspeak and a few others*

Glad you changed the wording on that.

Installing SP2 would be the first order of business for me, but I think the culprit is likely the DellDock. It uses similar coding to WindowBlinds or is just a reskinned version of WindowBlinds and can cause problems as panthera noted above. Something you didn't install but came on your PC from the OEM.

Also, since you are using an ATI video card, I would highly recommend starting off (once you get the launcher problem resolved) by setting your Catalyst Control Center and in-game graphics settings by the first post in Bill Z Bubba's ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations thread. It will save you many headaches at first. Once you get things running smoothly, you can start tweaking some settings (keeping in mind the ones Bill lets us know are definitely problematic in CoH) to increase your visual settings. Bill likes his pretty in the game, so you may find that the settings suit you fine, but you may want to play with them one setting at a time on your own.

Along those lines, you may want to download and install TweakCoH which will allow you to adjust your graphics settings before you get into the game as well as letting you change some of the fonts used by the game. It likely does more that I just haven't played with it enough to know about.

One other thing you might want to try is another setting in the Properties of your shortcut to the game. On the Compatibility tab, try putting a checkmark in "Disable desktop composition". This turns off Aero when you launch the game, and when you close it will re-enable Aero. So you can have your shiny and not have it interfere with your gaming.

Once you get things running smoothly, you can start tweaking some settings (keeping in mind the ones Bill lets us know are definitely problematic in CoH) to increase your visual settings. Bill likes his pretty in the game, so you may find that the settings suit you fine, but you may want to play with them one setting at a time on your own.

Along those lines, you may want to download and install TweakCoH which will allow you to adjust your graphics settings before you get into the game as well as letting you change some of the fonts used by the game. It likely does more that I just haven't played with it enough to know about.

One other thing you might want to try is another setting in the Properties of your shortcut to the game. On the Compatibility tab, try putting a checkmark in "Disable desktop composition". This turns off Aero when you launch the game, and when you close it will re-enable Aero. So you can have your shiny and not have it interfere with your gaming.

Yep, as mentioned in previous post, upgrade to SP2. It really helps.

Those driver dates are really hinky looking and suggest corrupt driver installations. Yes, I know it's a new computer, but even Dell can screw the pooch at times.

In the ATI thread I mentioned in the other post, Bill gives a good set of instructions for correctly uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. I'll recommend using DriverSweeper since it is still free, unlike the excellent Driver Cleaner that Bill mentions. Just follow the same basic steps but use DriverSweeper in place of Driver Cleaner.

Keep us posted on how things go.

Be sure not to miss the bolded part above about the DellDock. It was one of the first things I uninstalled on my Dell when I got it, and I haven't missed it a bit. Just disable it if you don't want to uninstall it. If you find that is the problem, you can make the decision then for yourself if it is worth keeping it installed.

There is. Sometimes you have to do some other updates first before it will show up.

Or, you can go directly to Microsoft's website to get it.

well the 'SP2' i found was about Win Server 2008, Vista, and what i took to be a language pack for Vista x64

No, the link I gave is for the "All Languages" full download of SP2 for Server 2008 and Vista. There is also a "5 Languages" version, but the most efficient is the one through Windows Update since it only downloads what YOUR computer needs. If you look at the page I linked to in the section headed System Requirements, you'll see that it lists Vista Ultimate 64-bit editions.

The first two are intended for IT people (like me) that want to have a single download that we can put on a network drive or DVD and run from those without having to download it at each computer.

Reading the specifications on that page that you linked, it does look like it's the correct one. The wierd thing is that he downloaded all important updates as it is, but SP2 still did not show in Windows Update. I'm wondering if Dell might have done something to block that update.
