Reading the specifications on that page that you linked, it does look like it's the correct one. The wierd thing is that he downloaded all important updates as it is, but SP2 still did not show in Windows Update. I'm wondering if Dell might have done something to block that update.

Quote:It's the same with Windows Key+L or Start > Log Off > Switch User, but I mentioned before that this is not an option for LAN Center computers as the timing software they use locks you out of most normal Windows features. This is where I believe it is going to be needed the most. I personally game at home (now that I don't work at the LAN Center anymore) & do not have these kind of problems. This already exists. It's called Ctrl-Alt-Delete then select "Lock Computer".
Quote:i still hold firmly to the fact that nothing is wrong with the way it is now. 10-15 secs is a moot point and why this will stay at the bottom of the basement of things to do. also what is going to happen if they do implement this and something goes horribly wrong with it and no one can get on at all? not an easy fix. again, why try to fix something that isn't broken? -
Quote:I believe the suggestion to enter the password was to re-enter the game once you've locked your game. The other suggestion had to do with character deletion.so instead of jusgt going back the the log in screen you want to have them log out to character select screen then put in a password to get back into the game?
The main issue is having to re-enter the password multiple times when switching between character. When all I'm doing is bumping characters login times, the means I'll have to re-enter it about 10 times.
This is the same issue. That's why I originally said the server or character selection screen. If the decision was to load the character selection screen, then you could just back out to the server screen. If it was the server screen, then you could bypass that step.
Locking the game would mean that your memory would not be dumped; therefore, you would not need to reload information into memory on re-entry of the game. Logging out, then back in currently means you have to reload the area that you are currently in. If you were to log into another account, then the memory would be dumped & information for the new account/server/character would have to be loaded as normal.
Quote:stop thinking about just being on one server. im sure at least 75% of the people that play this game have toons on multiple servers.
Quote:I like the idea, very much, for in the past this game has had issues with the player log-in server, to get access to the server accounts to begin with. So in those not so rare times, when the servers are acting-up, it would be nice to be able to avoid the log-in server all togehter if possible.
Quote:With regards to the safety issue, make it an option, so we can do things at our own cognizance. So far CoH does give you choices, you can log out to log-in or log out to desk top, so all its required is to offer two other choices, not really to "unheard off", I believe WoW also gives you such choices as well.- Logout (which drops you back to the character selection screen)
- Exit Game
GW currently has three options:- Logout
- Exit
- Character selection

Quote:Yeah. That was my second suggestion made in this thread (first to address security concerns). You are the first person that has found this favorable. If this is a problem that people are having, maybe the devs can look into a /lock command that would lock the game temporarily until a user name/password is put in again (or until the AFK time out kicks the game back to login screen).
Although a console command would not have to be the only method. There could be a way to lock the game via the logout menu. -
Quote:I actually like this idea. Good thinking!better (imo) thinking: by making you type in your password every time you want to delete a character, you keep (nearly) everyone from deleting them. Also, this allows you to more quickly switch characters.
And I played Silkroad for a time. They made it so that you had to wait a period of time after hitting the delete key before the character would actually be deleted. You could change your mind & cancel the deletion within that time & the deletion of the character would not be processed. -
Quote:Considering the laptop was still able to connect, I doubt that would make a different. I already suggested this however, but I don't think he's tried it.also this is a small thing u can try that would take not even 5 minutes, shut ur PC down, unplugg ur power cord on ur modem, wait 30 seconds, plugg ur power cord back in,wait for all the lights to come back on then power ur PC back-up---doesnt sound like my idea is the problem but hey--what would it hurt
We decided to uninstall last night & try installing using the NCSoft Launcher. It may have been possible that his CoV disc had gone corrupt/damaged & we thought we might get different results this way. -
I've been trying to help him on this issue on TS, but we've come up dry so far. Things we've tried so far:
- Disabling UAC
- Disabling firewall (Norton)
- Disabling virus protection (Norton)
- Running CoH/V as Administrator
- Forwarding required ports to Vista 64-bit computer (hardware firewall active)
- Uninstalling/reinstalling (from CoV disc)

Quote:That's another thing I've found myself running into. I've found myself making Excel documents of my Powers/Enhancements just to keep track of what I have on my other Build.(especially for those of us who forget what IOs we currently have slotted on the other build

Quote:The point of the secondary suggestion is to provide protection if the first one gets implemented (it technically could be used as it's own suggestions as well). People playing from their homes most likely won't have this problem & won't have to lock their game anyways. I understand the issue of LAN Centers however as I used to work at one. A lot of brats liked to jump on other peoples accounts while they were taking a bathroom break. I would personally just lock my computer in this case (Windows key+L), but this is not an option when it comes to using LAN Center computers as many use timing software that will lock you out of normal Windows functions. But wouldn't you have to enter another password to "unlock"?
If so, how does that save any time from the current method?
One suggestion I made for this game was the ability to save/export game options. Didn't expect that one to get supported, but it got supported maybe half a year later. -
Quote:I was already aware of the chat channel restrictions, I didn't realize that mail was one of them however. I'm actually still learning the game, so a lot of it is still unknown to me.You're aware that trial accounts already have limited communication abilities, right?
May only speak in Local, /HC (help channel) and Team. No Broadcast, Request, Arena, Architect Chat, use of Tells or Global channels.
May not join a SG (thus, cannot use the SG channel)
May not start a team (thus, may not recruit randomly just to spam teammates out of range of Local)
May not Email.
(Click on Paragonwiki in my Sig and enter "Trial Account" into the search)
And I-16 (Which I expect to drop before the end of the month) will allow you to filter out the majority of the current spam (Email from strangers).
As always, I welcome new, viable ideas to thwart, remove, restrict or eviscerate RMT'ers, so long as those ideas do not hinder, hamper or punish legitimate players. This idea, however is pretty much already covered. We got rid of the bulk of the tell-spam by removing tells from trial accounts.
So they moved to Email, which we will finally get a reciever-side filter for.
If you can tell what their next method will be, then let's get cracking on solving that. Otherwise, we will have to wait until they shift gears and react accordingly.
Quote:Congratulations, however, for single-handedly starting out restrictions on RMT-Spammers in WoW, and according to your other thread, bringing new innovations to Guild Wars too. -
How about the ability to lock your account to go with it then (without actually logging out unless your computer loses connection). This would take you back to the login screen without technically logging you out of the game (with a message saying that the user is still logged in & that logging in under another account will log that user out).

I've noticed that in-game email appears to be the prefered method for sending Inf. sales spam over this game. And it would only make sence that Trial accounts are used to do this with as they don't have to pay for banned account.
My suggest is that only payed accounts can use public channels (that is; any channels except for Tell, Local & Team) & email. Trial accounts would be limited to just the Tell, Local & Team channels. This would force Inf. spammers to pay for an account, which is going to end up getting banned in the process; while NCSoft makes a profit from the banned accounts.
I made a similar suggestion for World of Warcraft, which got supported shortly afterwards. It stopped such spam from reaching the public channels for sometime, but they eventually started paying for accounts to spam; which ended up getting banned & Blizzard made a profit from those account in the process.
Considering you are making a profit from a company that is technically stealing from you anyways, it's a situation that game companies having the problem shouldn't pass up. While it helps the gaming companies by gaining income off of those who are stealing from them, it ends up hurting them as well & the companies doing this will eventually begin to fizzle out. -
I decided to recreate this thread & the other suggestions didn't have tags.
With the current system, if you want to switch characters, you have to:- Log out of your account.
- Log back into your account.
- Choose the server you want to log into to.
- Select the character that you want to play.
- Log out of your account.
-
With the current system, if I want to apply an Enhancement on the build I am not currently using, I would have to:
- Find a trainer.
- Switch over to that build.
- Apply the enhancement.
- Wait X minutes to change back.
- Go back to what I was doing.
