Mission Architect Suggestion

I complained about this in i14 beta...again i15 beta.

Please please Please please.

I beg the devs, Positron, BackAlleyBrawler, Castle, Synapse, Sunstorm, pohsyb, anyone who will listen, to make the animations for Characters in the Mission Architect interface window to default to off.

When the window is open and the animation are on it causes an insane amout of lag. Setting do not effect this. The lag is so bad it takes several attempts to click "stop animation" under the character for it to take affect.

This greatly affects my playtime making me not want to even mess with the AE system all.

I do not know if anyone else has this problem orhas a fix I am totally open to suggestions tips anything to fix this.

I must say, I don't think I have experienced what you seem to do.

I would suggest you try to run COH Helper and post the result here.

okay heres what it gave me. When I open the section that has a character in it my framerate floors.

check for updated video drivers for the video card. also see if there are any for your audio. also update your operating system. vista is using service pack 2 now.

None of these things help....NONE.

It's so bad I cant even close the editor.

Fix this!!!

I can admit that the players should have to adjust some settings to optimize the game.

I have been trying to get the animation to stop while editing my arc for over twenty minutes so I can continue the editing.

I can't close that section of the editor because thats the section I want to edit.

Just turn off the animations in the editor!!!!!!

Update to Service Pack 2, it helps with several issues.

Turn off Anisotropic Filtering in your in-game settings. There are known issues here. If you want to read more detail, check out Bill Z Bubba's stickied thread on ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations.

I experience none of the problems you describe, even on my old XP system that stutters and staggers like a drunk on a 3 day binge anytime I try to go to a Hami Raid, even with the graphics turned down. That computer has an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ processor, 2 Gigs of RAM, and an nVidia 6800 Ultra.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Which drive are you running CoH on?
Have you checked for defragging on your drive that only has 25% free?
Are you running other programs while you are running CoH?

Two suggestions.

First, go to a AE building that isn't as crowded. There is practically one of every nonhazard zone of the game. Most are pretty empty of folk.

Second, if you are writing a mission try going to Studio B in the AE building. Powers are suppressed there.

Not to be rude FX but do you think I would be complaining about it if I hadn't already exhausted every possible location and power supression.

I have even gone so far as go to the farthest corner of the mose desolated map and used the AE accolade pad.

it really comes down to there is no reason to have the animations set to default to on.

it isn't the animations that are causing your comp to lag. noone else is experiencing it. it is something with your system that is the problem. do us a favor, get all your updates for everything on your comp, then run coh helper again and post it. also make sure to do a disc cleanup and defrag after getting all the updates, then do the coh helper report.

Sorry, I skimmed over your post and I thought you were complaining about powers on other players in AE causing your system to choke, not a feature in the editor.

This is most likely contributing to, if not the direct cause of your problems. I would highly suggest you update to SP2 as well as updating your video drivers.

The animations are not causing any undue lag on myself, or any of a dozen SG mates that I have asked to test for me. They are all on varying quality of computers from 6+ year old granny boxes to high end gaming rigs.

All you guys keep saying is it's not the animations....

But when I finally get the animations to turn off the lag goes away.

This is the only place I experience any lag. I don't even lag out during Rikti invasions in Atlas Park on virtue.

Rule number one of finding a solution to a problem.

If you do something and it fixes the issue, undo what you did to see if issue returns. if it does that is obviously the solution.

The simplest answer is probably the right one.

The reason we are saying that is because none of us are experiencing this issue. Hence, it is not the animations themselves that is causing the problem.

More likely, the problem is something on your system that is either interfering with, or just not able to handle the animations correctly and this may be what is causing you this lag. This would be why you were asked to put up the HijackThis and CoH Helper logs.

Several suggestions have been made, including the very important one of updating to SP2 as well as updating the out of date drivers (in yellow). If you are still having issues after doing these things, it may be a hardware problem that would need a bit more investigating to find.

Undated Video drivers

Updated sound drivers.

and I very upset that the automatic updater missed sp2. burning the image onto a disk now and will install as soon as that finishes, then I will see if the animation still cause lag.

I am not holding my breath, considering that I had this problem when i14 was new and the drivers were up to date and sp2 wasn't even out yet.

that could mean that maybe there is a fix for it in SP2, since it wasn't out yet, maybe it's in there now!

*crosses fingers for ya*

the good news is that the lag isnot as bad the bad news is it's still a noticeable frame rate decrease.

heres my new CoH helper info.

Three things..the "new" drivers for the audio are either the same or older than the old ones.

I still say the animations should default to off.

The lack of lag could simply be the result of several reboots and clearing of any memory leaks.

Posted

Well damn, I'm sorry it didn't fix the problem. At least it made it a little better?

By defaulting it to off, then the majority of the population would have to re-enable it to see it so that would not really make sense. However, I don't see any issue with adding an option to turn the animations off.

I am unsure of what advice to give now, perhaps checking Billz extensive thread on ATI tweaks to see if anyone there has had similar situation as yours.

Sorry Scootertwo.

There is one thing I wonder about in your log.

As far as I know, it is best your initial page file size is larger than what is required, due to reducing de-fragmentation.
In both your logs I can see the actual page file being bigger larger, so I would recommend increasing your page file setting.

Furthermore, you might want to ensure that you have no unnecessary programs running taking up RAM.

When lag starts to hit you, try using /reloadgfx. I, too, experience lag at the AE screen after a period of time.
