Secondly, I went rafting last weekend and nearly died (seeing another raft shooting over a rapid and about to land on your face kinda makes you regret not posting more useful links in random posts...)... so I'll pass on that for a while

Does what you all are talking about in this thread have anything to do with the automatic download that happened after I quit playing this game yesterday afternoon?

The automated download is the pre-download for Issue 16, so that when Issue 16 is actually released, you only need the diff from that pre-download to the final release, instead everything from i15 to i16 (so less load on their servers).
