So I'm trying something in photoshop. I want to take in-game screen caps, and edit them so they come out more like comic illustrations, or even like cell shaded drawings. Here's my first attempt. How'd I do? (click on the image for the full size version)

That's very cool but can you show a before and after so us lay-folk know what you did? I mean I think I get it but not 100%. Either way still cool.

Befunky.com does this as well in 1 click... I warn you now it's addictive...

Okay so now I see and was able to open both in PS. Very cool stuff. At first I thought you just created an overlay of the outlines then colored it in but now I see you did WAY more than that. I'll say again, very cool. I could see this being used to create a cool comic. Have you tried this with actual toons yet?

sort of. It was my first attempt at using this technique for these screen shots.

My first use of this technique was to make images of the E-frames for the Exo-squad Wiki (like these: RA-643 Neosapian E-frame, El-909 Y-wing, SLR-345 Wraith, and AA-500 Falcon)

My first attempt at a toon follows: (click on thumbnails for larger view)

And actually a comic is exactly what I'm trying this for. I've made a couple comics in the past but I wanted more control over the images so I've been reading up on different ways to accomplish certain things. Here's 1 end result.

I'm trying it on this image now:

Okay I really like where you are going with this. I've seen some of the web comics based on screen shots and they didn't have that comic feel to me like these do.

Best of luck and keep us updated.

Thanks power. The next thing I'm gonna try is "mixing" two different line art pieces to achieve a new result. Specifically facial expressions. I'm gonna see what I can do, but I may need an actual artist to provide me facial expression guides. I'll post as I progress.

Ok....befunky is very addicting

Back on topic I LOVE the Rikti pic. I would be hard pressed to find any sign that it was not hand drawn, outside of scouring for brush strokes.

Is there a tutorial for the technique you are using to convert the screenies?

not specifically. I'm combining 3-4 tricks I've learned from different tutorials. I can type one up though. I got some time to kill.

Ok so I am trying to learn how to color images because I can't draw to save my life. So things like this topic interest me.

I took your original image and overlayed it onto the untouched screen capture then played with the opacity and came up with some cool effects. It reminded me a lot of the current X-Force comics. They have a realistic yet comic look. I'm at work but I'll try to post it up just for fun when I get home.

I agree with the poster who said he loved the Rikti image. I too would not know it wasn't drawn by hand if I hadn't seen this thread. Cool stuff indeed!

The expressions are clear. That's good. He lost his goatee in the last one, though.

yeah, I noticed that after I posted it. Oh well, that's why ya do these little "stress tests" so you know to watch out for those little things.

If you have Photoshop, it's very very easy to create this effect in less than 2 seconds. You can even tweak how much distortion, dark lines, etc.

Here's the original;

1.) Now select the layer containing your image.
2.) Select "Filters" from the menu.
3.) Select "Poster Edges".

Here's the Poster Edges Editor;

4.) Adjust the edge and posturization sliders to your preference.
5.) Click Ok.

Here's my result;

Have fun!

Here's a comic cover I was working on some time ago using Poster Edges;
