To Shadow Maul? Or not to Shadow Maul.

I have a DM/EA brute. I read the guides, but I want to know your opinions to help make my decision.

Brutes and Shadow Maul... do the two go together well? I can take it... I can skip it... heck, I have Sands of Mu... but for some reason I still cant make up my mind.

So... what do you think?

Most of the guides here were written before melee range was extended a bit. So it's easier to line up more targets in the arc now. Still, it depends how good you are at split-second cone adjustments.

Do you have the veteran power version? You can try it that way and see how good you are at dancing the cone.

Yeah I have the veteran one (Sands of Mu) and yes I have become good at lining up two or more mobs when the situation allows.

But the thing is... I can do without it. I dont NEED it for my attack chain. Though it would be nice. If I didnt take it it would mean spaces freed up for other powers. But the attack itself is still rather good...

And with Siphon being used as a heal rather than an attack, the only realistic chain I will have will look like this.

Brawl/Punch/Shadow Punch/Smite with the occaisonal Sands of Mu and Midnight Grasp thrown in there.

I am just wondering wether dropping Shadow Maul will seriously hurt my DPS, is what my real question is I suppose.

In that case, no, you don't need it. It's not going to hose your DPS to skip Shadow Maul. The only time you may miss it is on big teams where 5-bangers are common.

Skipping Shadow Maul will not break you, but it's still a very useful attack. First off, it has a better damage-per-endurance ratio than a normal attack even against a single target, and radically better DPE than your other attacks when you catch multiples in it. For brutes who habitually have endurance crunches, this is a good thing. While the DPA versus single targets is uninspiring when you could be busy chaining MG, Smite, SL, and Gloom in some fashion, it is your highest DPA attack assuming you can get just two enemies in the cone (other than Gloom which is just stupid awesome), and MUCH higher DPA if you can get 3+. If you are going up against large numbers of enemies on a regular basis, it's a very handy thing to have around. If you're mostly into PvP or AV soloing or something like that, or you just can't get the knack of lining up the cone in a split second, then it won't break your build if you pass it up.

Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.

My DM/SD is only 30, so maybe I am missing something, but my SL hits like a truck when slotted for damage, I cant imagine it out of the rotation, unless you are "supposed" to slot it for heal and neuter it.

Any thoughts?

As to SM, I treat it like a single target attack tbh. If there is a pack, I will try to target the back one if I can, but I dont sweat it failing.

He may be using an older build, or just older information. SL used to be a minor damage attack with a small heal. These days? It's a powerful attack, with a minor heal.

Frankly, it's a power that just begs to have 6 slots and to be Frankenslotted. It isn't difficult to cobble together a group of IOs to enhance Accuracy, Damage, AND Healing - with some Recharge and End Reduction in there, too.

Hmm... alright then. I think I will keep Shadow Maul out then.

And I DID notice Siphon Life did rather impressive damage... I five slotted it early to get to ACC/three heals in it.

With my respec I plan at 28 I will have the slots to six slot it and get a damage in there...

But right now I need it for a heal... As Energy Aura has no heal. Frankenslotting sounds like a lovely idea... but that wont happen until I get more levels, and more inf to feed into it. So far this is the only character I have on the server I am on.

I am cut off from Virtue and my millions of inf! *cry*

But anyway... thanks for the input!

Just remember that the markets are connected across servers so you can do a market trade to transfer some cash between characters even between servers.

In case you are unaware of how to do so I will elaborate...

Have your poor character purchase some low level TO that is rarely used/slotted (I find Intangibility/Interupt/To-Hit Reduction to be the best) and put it up for sale on Wentworths/the Black Market. Make sure that there are no other bids/sales listed for that item. Note the last few sales on the market and how much they were then log out.

Log into your Sugar Daddy on the other server and go to the market. Look up whatever item your other character put up for sale. Make sure that there is only One item for sale. This should be the one your poor charater put up. Be aware that it can take a min or two for the item to show. Check the last few sales of the item. Make sure that they are the same as what you saw on the poor character. If they are identical then purchase the TO for whatever amount you wish to transfer.

Log back into your recently poor character on the other server and he should have the proceeds from the sale. The only limitation is that the reansfer has to be between two heores or two villains.

Hope that helps.

If you see that all of a sudden there are 10 of those same TO's for sale, someone is likely fishing for your xfer. Step up your bids from very very low to whatever it takes to buy all of them. I wouldn't have guessed this to be that common, but of the 15 or so market transfers I've done, I've had it happen 3 times.

Actually, it does have a ( fairly weak ) heal in Energy Drain. Added recently.
