When selecting a spot for your character you normally get prompted to chose if you want to make a hero or a villain.
Safe for that am I not sure really, I got the same edition and I didn't run into any of these problems.
Make sure you used the serial code off the Pocket D VIP Pass , not the trial code. You should also have 12 character slots on each server. If you only have 8, you used the wrong code.

I've had the very same problem and followed all the instructions correctly to my knowledge...
Did either of you try to create the account yesterday? If so, the boards for doing that were undergoing maintenance, and you might have caught them at an odd time, when it allowed you to create the account, but the info got a little fubared in the system.
I would contact support on this issue, as there is little that players can do to help you if you've followed the instructions and it's still not working.
Sorry for your troubles, though. The game is definitely worth it.

Apply serial code - Bla bla bla XX12 BLA
Apply to account - NewUser
Your account has been upgraded!
Then, when you go to your account info it will be at the bottom.
In the event you have done this and still can't make villains, I'd contact customer support and they will walk you through a process or fix it for you.

It sounds like yesterday's account maintenance screwed something up. Too many folks being hit by this bug, and the bug that makes people unable to log into already-created characters after going back to the character select screen (see the last couple posts in the LJ Q&A thread).

Yeah, something's screwed up. You should be able to make both heroes and villains no matter what edition you buy these days.
