Death of a Hero - Player Death
That was a little harsh Fleeting.
I took the fact that very few seem to have known him, yet posted with messages of condolance, as an indicator of the community we share. Though he may not have been well known, he was one of our own. He played CoH, and presumably loved it, that gives him something in common with each and every one of us here. All of us are bound together, however thin and tenuous a binding it is, by the fact that we all choose to spend our free time playing this game.
Posting a message of condolance for someone you did not know is not the same as going to their funeral to get out of school. I would not presume that I would be welcome at the man's funeral, as I have never met him. That does not mean I can't sympathize with the loss his family and friends are going through.
With that said, my condolances and sympathy go out to Alan's family and his friends. He has made the final log out, and will be missed.

My condolences.

QFT.
Posting a message of condolence is pretty much the same as sending a card or stopping at the viewing at the funeral home. It's a sign of respect and of empathy for those who did know the person now gone. It's part of being in a community.
Not a Freedom player, so I likely never encountered him, but I also offer sympathies to family & friends.

It's always heartbreaking to hear of the loss of a member of our community. My deepest condolences to Alan's family and friends.
Real classy, Fleeting.

I didn't know him either, but I do express my condolences in a cosmic sense. I do care when other players have bad things happen to them, and even if I have no idea who they are, I still wish them all the best.
If I ever die during my run in the game, I hope everyone remembers me well. Please don't get too maudlin, though, I'd want everyone to have a big party. I've already told my family that I want to either be cremated or buried in something comfortable. Not that I suppose it matters, but the other part of my request is that the most formal I want anyone to dress at my funeral/visitation/wake/whatever is to be in blue jeans and maybe a golf or polo shirt. No ties, suits, dress pants, or dress shirts allowed. And if I'm in a suit or something, I'd probably look pretty silly being so overdressed.
I should probably put in my will something about notifying people here. The wiki should be pretty well taken care of, I do have another administrator who has root-level access to everything.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
I care because I have been through this. Firstly, I am a widow and saw a person I loved with all my being lose the fight to Diabetes type 2 and CHF...secondly, the leader of the SGs I belong, the one who never gave up on me as I was learning this game, Shaz Rose, died the day before Valentines Day. I had never met him in RL, but I cried and cried when I found out.
In each of our SGs, he made a lot of SGs, the new leader created a memorial wall, and in Vents spelled out "In Memory of Shaz."
It's funny, but I feel like he is still ingame cheering me on.
So, yes, you can indeed feel sadness about the passing of somebody you never knew. Losing loved ones makes it happen.

My condolences as well. While I may not have had the pleasure of meeting your friend, the loss of those close to us is something we can all sympathize with.

I think I should do something like that, too, though I'd hope I still have a long way to go before needing something like a will. But I don't know any my SG-mates in real life, and none of my real-world friends play this game, so there would be no way of notifying my SG, or the CoX community in general, if something unfotunate happened to me and I ended up in a hospital bed unconscious, or with no internet access.
But to the point of the original post, even though I've never met any of the other players of this game in person, there are many among them that I consider friends, and though I never met the subject of the original post, even in-game, it's still sad to see a fellow gamer leave this world. Also, I lost my father to gall bladder cancer a mere three weeks ago, so I know what it's like to lose a loved one. From one mourner to another, you have my condolences.
