Updater slow!!!

I've just bought this game through steam, and installing COH is turning into an extremely difficult process. When I go to run it, the COH updater comes up, but it only downloads the patches at 2-3k/sec. That means the 150k patch it's working on is gonna take about 13 hours to download. Seeing how I have a broadband connection, and I've verified my download speeds are normal (350-450k/sec), I find this very puzzling.

If it's going to take all day just to download a 150M patch...well I got better ways to spend my time and money

...downloading things takes money? And you *can* do other things while it downloads, you know. You don't have to sit and watch the numbers tick down...

That aside, the updater is well-known to use "Microsoft Minutes"...i.e. it is likely that it will take much less than it says it will. If it's not going very fast, it's likely to be a firewall problem or some other problem on your end, however. The Tech Issues forum may be able to help you more.

For what it is worth, I have never gotten that slow of download speeds from CoH's patch server. Check that there isn't something impeding your connection speed. I usually average around 200kbps on mine.

Now, when I was downloading the patch for aion, I had 15k. That was due to extreme server load. It does not make sense that the servers would have that much load right now

As for the snark at the end, you'll find forumites are happy to highlight this and never really answer your question because of the snark. It's best to avoid it so you get the answers you need.

Hey...I answered the question! I just answered the snark first.

Edit: If the OP is even bothering to check back with this, which I doubt, I've been told by a friend that the problem might be with Stream. They're well-known for problems like this.

FWIW, I would have answered the snark too had it not already been done.

He probably ragequit already, dude.

Going by the last line in his post, he seems to have the attitude of "How DARE this updater be slow!". Instant gratification and all.

If he actually checks back into this thread I'll be really surprised.

Especially as this is a necro post.

Nice catch. I didn't even notice, since there is another thread about the same thing on the first page here. I figured a couple different people had the same problem at the same time, which wouldn't be the first time that's happened.

Edit: The other thread is a necropost as well.

Yup, noticed that too. This is a problem Residentx10 has been mentioning for a while so guess he's replying to every single post he can find on the topic.

Yeah, I rarely pay attention to post dates of threads on the first page of Player Questions. I almost never see threads more than a week or so old still on the first page, so my immediate assumption was that it was a new thread, as I didn't recall seeing them before.

Best part is there are 4 more than I have see, although someone said in one of them there are 11.

Do you think 268 hour is a reasonable time for a download?
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=245355

Instant grat isn't even an option here(haha). I was hoping the downloader would give me 500 hours till completion. Does that sound more positive, kiddies?

Rx10 is the only person in these forums I've ever put on ignore. Just because every time you try to help him with a suggestion he sticks his fingers in his ears, says "Lalalalalalalala I'm not listening" and then goes back to complaining about how it is in no way possible that it is the fault of his system or connection and that NCSoft is full of programmers who don't know what they are doing and never fix anything.

It's like trying to talk to Veruca Salt.

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!

Here is the difference between me and RX10. I just cancel and move one. Complaining is a useless exercise because even if your right most people will get offended. This is the shallowness of people. I'm having problems with this game and I have tried earnestly to get it resolved by every means possible. I've opened tickets, did uninstall reinstalls, posted on the boards, and even mined the history yesterday to no avail. I've done all I can and now I'm ready to go. You can't win every time, right?

I don't know. Do you think making a mess of a private message board is an acceptable alternative to working with Customer Support and fellow players to solve your problem?

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

The problem is not with Steam. Just downloaded the CoH base from them at about 295kb/s, the CoH updater is currently running at 9kb/s.

Of course Steam might want to have a bit of a think about why there's 674mb of updates required for a freshly downloaded title but the speed issue is not something they are responsible for.

It doesn't seem possible to launch the game without letting the updater run its course (would love to be told otherwise - is there a command line option to skip the update check?) which is very frustrating - one of the days of my subscription will be up before I've even seen the loading screen.

At least it suggests good news for activity in the CoH world - if this glacial performance is a result of a whole raft of new subscribers there should at least be plenty going on once we are finally able to get playing.

*edit* Just seen this is an old thread - apologies for resurrecting it, came up first on a search, didn't check the dates. Looks like I'm just another UK customer experiencing tediously slow download speeds - seems to have been the case for UK CoH customers forever.

You might try asking for help in the Technical issues forum (above this one in the development sub-section).

You can either through the website or ingame submit a /bug (choose "suggestion" - the suggestion option might actually under /petition) to NCSoft about working better with Steam to keep the base game download more current. Steam should have a similar option under help.

I definitely recommend contacting NCSoft (via website or petition) if just so they can ask for a traceroute. The current updater is supposed to take advantage of a dispersed download point service from what I recall.

Sorry it's a rough start for you, but this game an community are both great and we hole to see you ingame soon.

P.S. As an MMO the game will refuse connections from out of date clients. So which I can't recall if the old method to bypass still works, doing so at the moment would bot help you.

Makes sense to block outdated clients.

As it goes I now have transfer speeds up above 100kb/s which is tolerable.

In case anyone else picks up this thread via a search I should list the steps I took, I suppose.

I've set port forwarding for TCP 13094, 6694, 2104, 2106, & UDP 7000-7200 and launched the updater with

"D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\city of heroes going rogue\cohupdater.eu.exe" -port 13094

I've also disabled (temporarily) stateful packet inspection at the firewall.

Might be worth adding, this is on UK Virgin Media Cable - ISP traffic shaping may be the root cause.

... Is it just me, or did a necro'd thread get necro'd? It was brought back to life after over a year of rotting in the grave, and then someone saw fit to perform the ceremony again 5 months after that.

Yeah, but before anyone said anything, the person who necro'd it the second realized the situation an apologized. And provided a solution to anyone else who stumbles upon this thread that might work for them.

Hopefully they'll use it without necro'ing, but hey, can't have everything. And technical issue threads have slightly different necro rules anyway.
