falied to rename
Looks like the updater was trying to make a backup of itself (.prv - previous) but couldnt. I suggest checking if the updater file and/or folder it is in arent set to "read only" (right click on file/folder, properties, under general) or perhaps the user that launched the updater didnt have the needed permissions.
I do not suffer from altitis, I enjoy every character of it.
I noticed the updater "flickered" a lot, doing some sort of update. On one computer my antivirus software noticed the updater had changed and forced me to take action (granting it access to internet).
As usual there's no official information of what it was, but if you, like me, transfered CoX from one computer to another, it may very well be that some files have become read-only and still passed previous updates of the game.
This time it seems it was the updater itself, not the game that was updated.
Still, I'd prefer just a short official note about these things, like: Announcement: Updater was/will be updated today, more information will be announced shortly.
I always get paranoid when there's no official statement.
Yeah, just something like "The Game Updater has been updated, please ensure that CoHUpdater.eu.exe is not set as "read only" and note that this change may require you to update your firewall settings".
[Edit: Tweaked phraseology]
The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*
Bleep. Bleep. Bleep.
I get the same error.
failed to rename C: Program Files\City of Heroes\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.eu.exe to C: Program Files\City of Heroes\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.eu.prv
The only problem is that there is no "CohUpdater.eu.exe" but there's "CohUpdater.eu.tmp" and "CohUpdater.eu.new".
Renaming ...
"CohUpdater.eu.new"
...to...
"CohUpdater.eu.exe"
...solved the problem for me.
You should be able to fix this problem by deleting all CohUpdater.EU.??? files, and then downloading a fresh copy of CohUpdater.EU.exe from here: ftp://client.coh.com/EU/
Pleace it in the same folder you deleted the existing one from.

I tried logging on To City of X just now (tried it several times even), but i get the following statement:
failed to rename C: Program Files\City of Heroes\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.eu.exe to C: Program Files\City of Heroes\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.eu.prv
I didn't try to rename at all, I just clicked the CoH icon on my desktop. ANd then I got this message. Has anyone experienced this as well? I was able to log on to the testserver.
Can anyone help me to reslove this problem?
