CoX drawings by Darth Delicious
That's good work there Dee, liking it a lot. More shadow tho, you're the same as me, my shading is all to subtle, i'm now having to force myself to give deeper shadow...
There's parts, under the hairline, under the lower lip, under anything that protrudes, more shadow, presuming the light is from above. I'm only just getting this myself too though, so, your know, take my advice at a pinch Are you using layers for the shading? To make myself shade deeper, i'm adding another and another layer, until i feel i've got too much, like this:
It's a wip, and lit from below not above, but see the layers, more is better imo
I hope i'm not coming across too strong here, i'm only an amateur myself, but i see your potential and just want to add stuff i've learnt to help you grow more, you're going to be a great artist imo
Okay, one more preview before my visit to my friend;
As a reminder here's the last preview, followed by the latest. Now that I think I kind of have the hang of "my style" I try to do so as often as possible, without getting bored ofcourse. It's a slow style though... No promise of anything finishing anytime soon... but hopefully (and I'm aiming for it) I'll get both Saira as the Dee and Mike drawing finished before 2012! Then I can begin my huge project on the catpeople! *cheers*. |
doh, forgot to add, and this is the thing i was meaning to say all through...
i'm using black and white for all the shade and highlight, just changing the opacity for each layer, but as i (and you) get on, other colours can also give a different hue, blue, red, etc... if it's on layers you can play with it a lot
The Mike and Super DeeDee piece is coming along great DD.
I'm enjoying watching the progress and very glad my drawing could help inspire.
@Henri: You're right that many people go far too light on the shading but adding more
layers isn't always the solution and too many can confuse people not used to them.
None of the people whose images I "punched up" gave me a photoshop file with
the layers intact, I just colored right onto a single layer image I pulled from their threads.
While layer division is certainly much more versatile for making touch ups and changes later
(and it is a handy skill to know) there are plenty of professional digital artists I've seen that just use one.
Yep, i agree it's more difficult if you're just presented with a flattened image, but you can still start your shading layers from that point, means your not disturbing the original image either if your working on layers above it. I always name my layers too so there's no confusion, yes it could be tricky to someone not used to it, but then painting is tricky to someone not used to it And of course this is only my personal method, was just sharing as i find it a useful way to work, i guess artists adopt many different methods to create their art .
Thanks Henri, SenseiBlur and CR!
And yes... I'm quite aware of the fact that I NEED to use more shadows *giggles*.
I noticed that too.
Though... on Dee here.. I'm using more shadow then I usually would already hehe.
But I agree, it needs more.
I decided to do the basic shadowing first, go as dark as I dare and once satisfied, I'll go tweak it till it's even better.
And yes to layers!
Though I'm not using layers atm. I'm VERY fond of the smudging technique! Don't need layers for that .
I just use a waaaaay lighter colour and a waaaay darker colour (not white and black, but near them, in a tint of the colour I'm working on), put it on there with a brush and start smudging till I get the result I want.
It's an awesome way to decide where the shadow and lights exactly go, aspecially when you're not quite sure yet.
But the tweaking of this one will probably be done on another layer *nods*.
Then again.. I always have back ups available. So when I scr...eh.. mess up, I can always start the whole tweaksession again.
But layers can save you a lot of work indeed. Don't need to start over then . Just delete what you don't like and go from there.
Thanks for the feedback guys! To be continued!

Yay, Hair, not... furry tentacles!
Oh, and has anyone mentioned what great Eyes you drew, there?
Be Well!
Fireheart
Thanks! I'm glad to hear you like the hair! It was quite the struggle to get it this way... and actually more of an accident too *giggles*.
I completely messed it up at some point...they really did look like tentaclas...very bad arranged shiney and round tentacles even *shivers*.
Oh I have a little WIP of how that started...
Don't have a WIP to show what I had made of the hair on top, but I tell you.. it was terrible! So I started smudging it, messing it up even more!... Or so I thought.
When I took a peek at it the next day, it looked like the top hair on the latest preview....and.. well... it really wasn't that bad, I thought!
Odd...what a night of sleep can do!
So now she has an old fashioned big hairdue! *giggles*
And the eyes (thanks Fireheart!)... I didn't plan on making 'm like this. As I have CR's drawing as my reference... and well.. they look quite diferent in that one!
But I too like the result

It's beginning to look like a Daily Update...as here's another one!
Now I will see to my cramped right hand and the constant pink glow my eyes put on everything (go figure ) by taking a good night sleep!
Feedback welcome.

I'm done with DeeDee for now. Am still not completely satisfied with the shading on Dee's clothing, but I'll look into that later on. First I want to get Mike on Dee's colouring level again, then I'll go into the shading a bit more.
So here's a preview of Mike!
Well.. his nose actually. *giggles*
Now my fingers are cramped once again and I shall have to stop the colouring for today *pouts*. I should set a timer for having breaks next time *nods and makes a note of that*
Edit: As my version of DeeDee was inspired on CR's most awesome drawing of her (I cherish it so much, it's probably unhealthy *blushes*), I thought I'd put up a "double Dee" image *giggles*
I think it's so wonderous what different styles can do to a drawing!

Time for another update!
Worked some more on Mike's face.
I wasn't agreeing with the first nose I drew on him..nor with how his eyes looked... but now it's getting like I imagined it would be .
Looks like I'm getting the hang of drawing noses *giggles*.
Still loads of work to do.. loads of shading too... *shrugs* to be continued!

There's enough room on that upper lip for an Amazing mustache!
Maybe just a little too much? I'd lower his nose into that space, just a little more.
Other than that, great work!
Be Well!
Fireheart
Thanks for the feedback! I'm not sure yet but I'll give it a try in my next run of drawing, see how it looks.
For now.... new update!
Now it's sleepy time for me!
I can't really see a difference in any colourshade anymore *blinks*
So... I'll see for myself what Mike looks like with the new update tomorrow! *giggles*

So I figured I'd bore you with another update!
Worked on Mike a bit more. Started shading his suit, finished his hair. Still loads to do though. Didn't touch his nose... as well..basically, I like it this way . Everytime I tried "moving" the nose, even slightly, I just went... "nah" and put it back.
Also did a few light corrections on Dee after some feedback .

@Neko; Because Mike shaved before posing? *giggles*
I thought about adding some facial hair on him, giving him a slight unshaved (and because of that a more manly) look, but I haven't figured out how to do that exactly just yet.
So for now, Mike will remain smoothly shaved :P, which makes him look much younger than he actually is. Personally I don't mind though. I think he looks rather handsome *nods*.
