CoX drawings by Darth Delicious
Fire is a very hard first colouring project, but maybe you're like me, why make it easy for myself, lol
You've got the idea right though, the whiter shade at the base of the flames. Try adding a more orangey yellow to the tips of the tongues of flame. On clothing/skin etc, I began by using 3 colours for each area to start with, a middle base colour, and a fairly strong shade either side for shadows and highlights. Then as you get used to blending colours together, you can introduce more shades in between. Practice on simple shapes like balls and cylinders, etc.
I'm still learning myself so please don't take this as 'the official method of colouring' or anything, it's just my experience so far
Hope it helps, H.
Thanks
I didn't colour the "fire" myself... I put an effect on it... *blushes* Using Illumination Effects..
I'll see what else I can do with that..
I do have a habit of not making it easy for myself hehe.
Should I have a layer for each colour?

No, think of a new layer as a piece of tracing paper over your picture. When you draw on the tracing paper, although you can see it along with the original picture, it's actually on a separate sheet, so you wouldn't be able to blend the colours together as they're all on different sheets. Layers are best used for different stages of the colouring. So for eg: you'd have the original sketch on the bottom layer, then a new layer to colour all the fire, a new layer to colour the clothing, a new layer to add some little details like the belt buckle, chest emblem, etc.
The usefulness of this is like, if you've done a fantastic job on colouring the chest but you then **** up the chest detail and ruin some of the chest colouring and blending, instead of having to try and repair the damage, you just clear the chest detail layer and start again. The chest colouring layer underneath will be untouched.
I don't use layers enough yet, but i'm sure glad when i have used a new layer and then make a mess of something
edit: oops, i've been hit with the badword police, lol, ok, read that as 'mess up'. Although how you'd decribe a male hen, i don't know...
*looks sad*
Despite your effort to explain some basic colouring, (which is very, very much appriciated) I hate to admit... I has no clue of what I'm doing.
It appears, once again (just like with drawing stuff) that I need a visual example to get things done. In this case, visual step-by-step examples on how to do things, which is frustrating as they are hard to find. (I know how google works, but I seem to be chosing the wrong words every time)
Maybe I'm just being impatient (it wouldn't surprise me )... but I've been trying for 2 whole days now (at least 10 hours a day) trying every option of colouring, how they work, what they do and how I can possibly use them... (which I still have no clue of.. I know what they cán do...I just don't know how)...and all I learned was how to add layers and select them. Oh, and how to make things transparent. Imo, that's not much.
Yes, I put the Chichester Dawson drawing aside and tried colouring a basic form like a circle instead...
Now I shall prepair dinner, hoping I can find comfort in eating it and build up some new courage to again try and colour stuff in PSP9.

Don't lose hope, 2 days is too soon for anyone to grasp the concept of how to colour plus the functionality of unfamiliar image software. Any colourist will probably tell you they are still learning things everyday, however long they've been at it. I'm just going to eat dinner too but i'll do a few examples later and post them up for you.
Chicken pie for me, what you having?
I'm actually relieved to hear there's hope!
I had a typical Dutch meal... eh... I'm just not good with translating that lol...
So my best shot;
Baked Potatoslices?
With... Butter beans.. or green beans?
A meatball:
And some chicken..eh.. fillet? (without bones ) (left over). I couldn't find an image of that which didn't look distasteful.
*starts up PSP9 again*
I'll be waiting for your examples! Thankies vewwy vewwy much! ^^

Hi again. Looks great
k, i've got a couple of examples here for you to show what i mean about colouring with 3 colours (the flat (red), and a shade lighter and darker). The first thing to think about is always, where is your light coming from. One light source is easiest, and the nice thing is, you get to choose where it is (Hence why the fire sketch is very hard, the fire is throwing light from every angle, yikes!!)
The reason i'm on about cylinders and balls, is that most parts of the human body (infact all objects) can be devolved into cylinders and balls, erm, and cubes.
Here's a VERY quick sketch of a figure I've copied from 'how to draw the marvel way' (which is a very useful book by the way ).
See how they make the figure up from cylinders, cubes, and the head would be a ball. If you can visualise any sketch you want to colour as these objects, and you have your light source in mind, you can then colour each area using the method shown in the cylinder and ball diagrams above.
This is as I understand it, I'm not a trained artist or a teacher by any means so please do look at other examples and stuff too. I hope this can be of some use to you tho. Good luck and ask anytime.
cheers H.
Cheers! That actually works! *huggles* .
I've noticed, the smudging takes practice, am I right?
It took me about 2 hours to create this little pink ball (yes.. it hád to be pink :P)
I was going to make it round again, but it's bedtime now, so that'll have to wait till tomorrow (and when I've figured out how exactly I'm going to do that :P)
How did I do sofar?
Night!

This thread is balls to the wall fun (I had to)
@Henri: Thanks! Now we'll see if I can put my just learned (very minor still) colouring skill into something else besides a ball
@Seinsei Blur: *giggles* I can't blame you! It appears to be about balls lately.

I (kind of) forced myself to finish the pink ball.
So here it is... Now actually round
And I put CR's shading tutorial to the test :

With my new found knowledge (thanks Henri and CR!) I decided to try and colour one of the requests I've done a while ago. Indepence, owner DoctorMystery.
Still had a scan of the lineart, so that was very convenient.
Fire will have to wait
Well haven't finished it yet, just thought I put it up here for those who'd like to take a look at it. (only been working on the "blue" )
Feedback is always welcome!

Because I like colours but am not good with them on paper, I thought I'd give it a digital try with Paint Shop Pro 9. I actually read a "how to" book about the program and have now finally worked out how to use layers. Well the theory that is. Actually doing so is a whole other subject!
I have a few scanned png's on my pc to use for practise. Here's my first tryout. Very ...VERY.. basic colouring. Chichester Dawson (user Welshman_EU) I still need to learn more about using layers and the right colours I'm afraid, to get the shading and stuff added to the drawing. Tips and Tricks are always welcome! *waves* |
Sorry so slow to see this I've been repeatedly buried in snow for several days in a row now. Digging myself out (and a neighbor who was injured) has been exhausting.
What about a yarn ball laced with catnip?
Oooh very nice! Welcome to world of digital coloring DD you're off to a great start.

Snow?! You poor thing! I'd help out if I was in the neighbourhood. Here in the (appearantly) less cold land of the Dutch, there's only storm, with winds of over 100km (I don't do miles ) per hour!

In the mean time I've learned a lot about colouring drawings!
Have learned new styles and ways.
And today I thought I'd give my own char Darth Delicious a shot at colouring.
The awesome Christopher_Robin drew her for me in an art-trade, and now I've managed to make this a collaboration by colouring it!
Personally, I'm quite pleased with the result. Didn't think I would do this well at a first try.
Though it took me most of the day .

This is why I love collabs so much.
@SenseiBlur: Yeah it's an art trade I did with her...
She did this cool drawing of my Xllusya here even though she had injured her thumb.
(probably while Kung-Fu fighting with grizzly bears or something awesome like that )
So I returned the favor with this here...
^clickable^
And now the the trade has
turned into an awesome collab.
P.S. Hey DD do you mind if I add some more to it?
I think I might be able to punch it up a bit.
Yeah tough to miss since my name is totally scrawled, Rock Star style, across her boob.
I guess my style is kinda distinct too n' stuffz.
Ooooooh. That's beautiful DD!

I'm actually still not completely done with that one, as I am halfway inking it...

As long I can learn from it, sure! You have my blessing. It's a collab afterall . Would you like the PSP9 file (not sure if that goes well with PhotoShop though)?

As Goblin Queen won a contest by guessing the right number in Christopher_Robin's head, he did a great job at drawing her character Storm Dragon and left a little note for the colourists out there.
So I thought I'd give it a shot
A quick colouring, as dragons are still a mystery for me when it comes to art.
