Election Day

Just a reminder that tomorrow is Election Day over in the good old US of A. I know the characters I have who are actually American have been rather too busy to worry about it recently, but with things settling down a bit, those of you actually playing Americans might like to consider who their character is going to be voting for tomorrow, or even if they will.

If you're going with local taste, Rhode Island is a Democrat state. They voted Democrat in 2004, and they'll probably do it again in 2008. Obama has a 10% lead there, as he does in most of the north eastern states.

If your character is from the west coast, he's probably voting Obama, it's more the redneck states down the middle that will be voting McCain.

OTOH, turnout is probably not going to be above 60%, and you may well feel that there's not a lot of point in RI. It has all of 4 electoral college votes, meaning that your vote counts for more or less squat.

BTW, you need to be age 18 to vote, like in the UK. You're allowed to vote for the president at 18, but you can't drink in public until you're 21... responsibility without reward, good going guys.

It's an interesting subject, and one I probably should have been bringing up for a while IC, but it raises a fairly important question: how far do we let real-world politics enter into the game? Obviously this would be an election year in-game, the American political system is quite rigid like that, but is it generally accepted that the candidates and the incumbent in the game world are the same as the ones we've got in the real world? Just interested to see what people's take is on this.

Wavekite, my only eligible voter who's sufficiently developed to have a political stance, will be voting Democrat anyway.

It got a few mentions at GG last night. Mostly around what would happen if Zorielle Rolando came to power. If there hadn't been a load of plot happening recently, I might have got more excited about it in-game, as it was, I certainly couldn't be bothered. Many GGers have the excuse that their characters aren't American, and can't vote. Why should they be bothered? (I have trouble enough raising enthusiasm for RL elections I can actually vote in...)

Liberty Girl would have wanted Hillary in the primaries, but is behind Obama now. She doesn't openly discuss politics, so wouldn't talk about it to anyone outside those she's close to.

Doc Bindweed likes the mavericks so will be voting for the Nader/Gonzalez ticket, as will Firearm, who can't resist a lost cause

I've only got one character that can vote, and I don't RP him much. Olympiad Prime will be voting for Obama. Of the rest, only Cara is a US citizen, and she's only 14 so isn't old enough to vote.

I did realize today it's likely Horizon would vote McCain, which is weird as there's no way I would!

Emily One wouldn't vote, being distrustful of the process in general.

Zorielle Rolando for 2012!

Shay Bennet is actually loaning one of his buildings for free to the Democracts to use as their Paragon rallying point. He's 100% behind Obama. Most of my eligable characters are voting for him, the exceptions being The Pioneer, a Republican at heart, Gary Judge (Who's donated to the McCain campaign) and that's pretty much it.

You just did that to make us hate him more, right?

Most of my characters are disenfranchised, being non-US citizens... In fact, the only one who CAN vote is a psychopath. Richard raised the point that Obama is likely to be good for the US, as he would be the first black president. He also pointed out, regarding the prospect of Zorielle running for office, that he would do everything he could to stop her, because he firmly believes that she would be a tyrant - simply because she has the resources to make the world a better place, and he doesn't believe that the world is ready for that.

Hehehe. Well, he's a tad arrogant, and he once intended to do it himself, so he knows how dehumanizing the effort would be.

Tyger would vote Obama if he could (mainly because he's anti-hunting, being part animal himself)

William Benedict would vote McCain, mainly because he's a die-hard republican, Christian and he's been in a coma for five years.

Most of my others are unable or unwilling to vote

Being Canadian and only partially connected to reality, Sera doesn't care overly, but would likely endorse Ackerman for his simple, easy to understand and appealing policies.

Apercu is barred from voting at least three times over (Isles citizen, felon, dead), but as far as she'd let an opinion be known, presumably Obama for at least being interesting.

Molly being 19, she'd be able to vote and would likely vote for Obama, as would Crash Leadfoot, however unlike Molly, she'd more likely just tick a random box and be done with it.

777 and Irene wouldn't bother, being of the opinion that their votes are going to mean diddly squat at the end of the day, and Shadowcrash, despite being born and raised in America, kinda has the little obstacle that is, well, being dead.

America made the right choice

Right choice? Remains to be seen. (No, I thought Obama was a better idea, I'm just a pessimist, and I don't think one person makes a difference to national thought.)

However, for those who read the forums, but not the news: Obama walked it.

Slightly more detail for the locals: In Rhode Island (with 98% of votes counted) it looks like 63.3% Obama, 35% McCain, 1.6% Others. RI should hand over four electoral college votes for Obama.

And I just rememebered something. Molly's actually South African, but was adopted and brought up in the US since before she was even 1. So, chances are, she couldn't. :|

I think that having been a permanent resident of the US for that long, she would have been entitled to apply for citizenship when she was 18, so it'd essentially be up to you whether she did or not.

Not that the issues would be quite the same in CoH universe. Can imagine that the credit crunch is due to the second rounds of Rikti invasions or something though.

It must be said that considering that we're dealing with a universe where Alien and undead invasions are commonplace, where brass-clad armies can march down to the White House any day, or crazed Nazis burst from the depths of wherever they're hiding, this is perhaps not the time for optimism, but instead a decorated war hero who's proved his mettle. Or something.

To be fair most of that only really seems to happen in Paragon.

I always thought all the Heroes went to Paragon as a kind of way of letting the rest of the public get on with their normal lives!
