I get so sick of running out of room. That insescent little 'boop-boop-boop' while your halfway through typing just makes the red mist come down...
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Background stories should be short. Not a novelle.
BTW how many characters is the room now? 255 characters perhaps?
Approximately 1000. And not nearly enough IMO: what is too much for you, is too little for others (or the "YMMV" approach). As always, I staunchly support this. Too many of my bios have been truncated.

Well you can argue about how much is enough and when is it getting to much. But frankly I don't mind that much. Though I prefer to not enlarge the decription but to give the players a 'diary', which can be read by anyone who wants to do so for the novelles. That way the descriptions can stay short and a fun little read while you wait for the team to assemble while the people who want to create a 16 page background can do so as well.
Or post a physical description of your character giving details on height, weight, eye colour, speech pattern, accent and so forth, with a link underneath to your char's handbook page (if you have one).

In-game web broswer links can't happen unfortunately, and not many have a handbook page, it's only the Union RP community. (which comparing to the whole game is quite small)
I meant type it in manually, or write it onto scrap paper and copy into the browser line. I knew already you can't click links in the game. If you don't have a handbook page, like I don't, then don't include the link. Simple.
Um whats a handbook

The Union Universe Handbook, of course!
There's a post about it in the RP forum.
oh right not been to the RP section for a wee while
Something that pulls up your actual specs would be really nice (hieght, colours, etc)
And a diary or something is actually a good idea, or a 'bio' page. E.G Description is a short thing, with deatails (see above), whereas Bio is a full blown biography. What it says on the packet.
If you dont want it, dont use it. But those who *do* want it would really like it, thanks.

But, do the folks who do want it realise how much the rest of us love laughing at what they write into those long biographies? That's the question.

No, Raven. The Question is two fold;
Face.
Bovvered?
In the RP folds, I guess it would be muchly asked for. I KNOW that most people simply skip them. Hells, even I do at creation time, sometimes because I cant be bothered at the time, or because I havent decided yet.
But, really, I dont care if other people are laughing. In the same way I tend to ignore people who are going 'lols I r gong solo 8 man mobs. U r all n00bs, I died !!1111' and that sort of thing. Thats not why I play the game, ergo, I dont need to listen to it.

You assume that I care about what others think of my characters. I don't. From my perspective, the bio isn't there for the reading pleasure of others. It's there for mine. Or, as Techbot_Alpha so plainly put it:
"Look at my face, though. Does any part of it look bovvered? Am I bovvered?"

As it is now you often just have to skip some important stuff. Story wise 1000 characters is just a bit to short to form a good plot. A small story, which is what a bio actually should be, still has a beginning a middle and an end.
As it is now you get into probs just before the end / slot lines. It doesnt have to be double... Maybe 500 characters more is enough.
- The Italian Job: The Godfather Returns #1151
Beginner - Encounter a renewed age for the Mook and the Family when Emile Marcone escapes from the Zig!
- Along Came a... Bug!? #528482
Average - A new race of aliens arrives on Earth. And Vanguard has you investigate them!
- The Court of the Blood Countess: The Rise of the Blood Countess #3805
Advanced - Go back in time and witness the birth of a vampire. Follow her to key moments in her life in order to stop her! A story of intrigue, drama and horror! Blood & Violence... not recommend to solo!

I'll step up and explain why, to save poor Birdy's stress levels.
The reason is a technical limitation on database field size. There's only so much data you can store within a field, and the character bio is just about at that limit.
Now sure, they COULD add a second field for more, and split the data over two, but if there's ONE thing programmers really really REALLY hate doing, it's changing the database schema of a live product. That way lies a LOT of headaches and a potential loss of live data if a mistake is made.
NOT something they'd do just on a players whim.
Best option, if you have a long bio, it to summarise it in that field and then provide a link to a webpage with the full bio.
@FloatingFatMan
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Weird. What database are they using which is limited to 1024 chars?
I thought Ravens objection was more down to the fact he doesn't like being able to know a characters backstory from just "looking" at them, that it was a roleplaying one.
As a total non-roleplayer and someone who gets bored easily I like reading bios, even the rip-off emo ones, whilest waiting for people to gather at mission entrances so I'm all for this.

Didn't say database, I said field. It depends entirely on what type of field they're storing the data in, to be honest; as well as what database server they use. In either case, it was said many many many moons ago that the limitation was down to field size. No db admin liked to mess with db schema's if they don't HAVE too.

It's not exactly rocket science changing / expanding field types. Especially if you test your changes properly.
Splitting it across two fields would be a far trickier and more cumbersome change.
right first i'm suprised how many ppl replyed in such a short time and second i know it ment to be short i'm not saying make it like a biograpthy just increase it by like 250 characters or somthing just enough to and some grammer or to add something extra

Had to do it often enough
But yeah it sometimes can be a bit of a hassle. Especially when you have to change the fieldtype as well. That could create even more problems.
Ah the good old times of the millenium bug where changing databases was part of the fun They had to recruit and train tens of thousands programmers to do just that.
Of course it is doable if they consider it a very good QoL thing.
this just some radom idea. but i would like to see a bigger description space cos i know alot of people that have the same problem. that they have to delete most of their characters backstory to add some grammer or something
