I really really needed to ask this.......
Yes, RP is generally done whenever possible. When a team of RPers get together for missions, it's common that someone will ask "IC or OOC?" (in character, or out of character). In other words, sometimes RPers RP in missions, some times not, but it does happen.
Usually this amounts to the use of macroed and typed quips and one liners, and banter between instances.
If the mission is part of a user run plot line, other things may also be involved, such as examining something, questioning an NPC, or Captain Fantastic taking a bullet to the liver for "teh dramah"
As Big Lunk said, it depends on the mission really.
You can run a mission IC'ly, which means your hero is following the mission's plotline, talking to the other heroes, reacting and sprouting usual Hero stuff as they work through it. Sometimes missions can also be used as plot, where a lot more story development and character interaction happens too.
RP in PD or at the Statue is usually social stuff with the characters in their time off. In bases it might be social stuff, supergroup meets, or just the base being used as a place somewhere else in the city.
Personally, I don't RP missions much. The most successful ones work when everyone is all action a lot of the time and a bit of idle chatter goes in when resting.
Plus, RP can be just playing your character out. We had one guy that insited on tackling computer terminals, because he was the tech expert.
I do most of my RP at the Galaxy Girl statue, where you can play out actually being a person, rather than a lot of power descriptions.

That's a good question, and somewhat tricky to answer.
A lot of RP in missions tends to happen in between fights, with players acting in character, having a conversation about what's going on. Other players will be skilled enough to carry this on during fights (I'm not one of them).
Because RP is all about the social interaction of the characters, it's hard to involve the enemies, but it can be done. However, most in-mission RP will be the characters talking to each other.
Sometimes, one player will be running a plotline, and will use a mission as the backdrop to it, too. In that case, the characters involved in the plot will be responding to events that the running player includes, as well as the events in the mission itself.
(this reply was posted from my phone, and is not as detailed as I would normally like)
The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*
Thats pretty much the long and short of it. Roleplaying in missions is difficult but not impossible. Typically conversations occur between spawns of foes or before and after mission entrances and exits. Sometimes well add our own descriptions to things so that we can use them for plot. For example, a standard Council mission can easily be described as being a building full of private security guards. (Ok, sometimes very freaky security guards who turn into freaking werewolves but thats a risk you have to accept sometimes. )
Also, RP in missions can also allow characters to act more as the character would rather than what makes good gameplay. So for example, if your character is a Plant/Empath Controller, you can RP them as being a control freak who doesnt really care about others and therefore only ever bothers to heal themselves. Or if your Scrapper is a bit of a coward, they may not suffer from the usual Scrapperlock that often befalls us when the red mist comes down.
Its fun, often difficult, but achievable with the correct amount of planning. I suspect that once the mission architect goes live, youll see more missions designed by and for roleplayers that typically have more glowies, more dialogue and longer gaps in between spawns.

Personally, I just stick to battlecries, quick taunts and all-out insults when RPing communication with the enemy. For example, my Blaster, Molly.EXE, may sometimes scream "Happy Fun Ball!!" just before popping a grenade their way, Or my Tanker, Patsy, shouting "It was supposed to hurt, hun!" at a fallen thug. Quick-fire stuff that should ideally take a few secs to bash out.
Still a bit tricky to do, but if you're a quick typer or have even just basic "macro skillz", it's deffo doable.
Sam: "My mind is a swirling miasma of scintillating thoughts and turgid ideas."
Max: "Me too."
Stuff
This is where the good news with Issue 14 comes in, it will allow for more specific planning with regards mob types, boss chat, what the bosses look like etc.
During the IC mission run of the RWZ last story-arc mission 'save the world' Ed mostly just used witty one-liners (such as telling Nemesis 'come on you big brass b***ard, I can have you!' and tanked him for a while before getting faceplanted (yay revive).)

A real showstopper!
So with I14 coming out, this will allow more detailed RPing as you can make a mission adhere more to your characters needs......would that be right?

Theoretically. We wait and see.
Once upon a time, we thought the Arenas would be excellent settings for RP, but in those days Roleplaying was considered by some at Cryptic to be the absolute last thing to consider when doing design work.

Indeed. Was it Statesman who said something along the lines of not anticipating players to be using Supergroup bases for Roleplaying?
And I remember some players showing War_Witch their bases when she was over here at Omega Sektor, and her surprise at just how hard some people pushed the tools to make bases look good for roleplaying, from things like double bookcases to make seperating walls to improv of other items for appliances and features.
Guys, I dont really understand the whole RP thingie.....I just wanted to ask a quick question - how do you RP when you are running missions? I see from my visits to PD that you chat and stuff, but how is this carried on during the game itself?
