Hello People

Could someone please explain " Alpha Strikes " to me. Do all attack sets use Alpha Strikes ? or is there a set that use more of them than others?

The only reason im asking is because i have created a WP/SS Brute and i want to understand the Alpha Strike better as it says on the Willpower description that is my main weakness. So i would like to try and get as much increase to defence for it as i can.

Thanks all

The Alpha Strike isn't a specific attack as such; it's what happens when the first toon catches the attention of a group of foes, and they all unload their first (hence "alpha") attack on him at once. For large groups of foes that can be a huge pile of damage.

The reason Willpower's particularly vulnerable to alpha strikes is that its main survival method's to regenerate damage, and even that only happens when they're close to mobs. As regeneration doesn't cope well with heavy bursts of damage (unlike defence or resistance-based sets, which can stop the damage impacting in the first place), that's bad news for WP types. The fact that the alpha usually lands before they're up close to the mobs and the regen's actually kicked in in the first place is just icing on the cake.

The regeneration set has the same issue. Somewhat worse, in fact, since it has less +DEF and +RES to help reduce all that Alpha damage.

The other thing about the Alpha Strike is that mobs will often kick off with their biggest, meanest, longest cooldown attack when they spot you. Hence, not only are you getting multiple mobs hitting you, they are using their most damaging attack all at the same time.

SS you say?

Well then Foot Stomp is a great way to kill the alpha strike, if you are using super speed you should be in the group and hit that before they retaliate. They cant hit you with one burst of damage then cause they will all stand up at a slightly different speed, your -tohit and regen will have kicked in. Job done.

I prefer active avoidance of such things than passive myself. My Elec/Fire uses Lightning rod in much the same way

Yes, but it's not up every fight and you still have to get to lvl 38 to get it

The only primary I can think of for a scrapper that doesn't let you defuse an alpha strike is Fire Melee. Is why we have two sets

So you said elsewhere. Hadn't worked that out (even though I was using it that way) at the time I posted.
