Polearms

I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, but the Idea is polearms, big long sticks with sharp things on the top, its available to all Melee archetypes (not widows)

Here are the powers:

1) Lunge
2) sweep
3) Impale
4) Spinning Slice or Assassins Skewer
5) build up
6) Ricochet
7) taunt or placate
8) Launching Smash
9) Abliteration

the customisations are:

Spear (dagger tip)
Trident (tripple tip)
Halberd (axe tip)
Voulge (Cleaver tip)
Nagamaki (blade tip)
Naginata (Cutlass tip)

Talsorian (like Naginata but energy)
Rulaaru (like Trident but with an eye)

Hope you like the idea, even if its mine or not, I'm hoping that its to be a possibility in the near future

Could we have a little bit more detail on what each of the moves do? Smashing/lethal damage I presume? PBAoE or Cone Damage, mainly single target?

I'm of the opinion that Melee sets are the last thing that need to be given extra sets, but regardless this isn't a bad idea...though I hold final decision til after there's a bit more detail

yes, smashing/lethal damage. sweep, launching smash and abliteation are all cone, spinning slice is PBAoE. Ricochet is a parry attack and all other attacks are single targeted.
Abliteraction can also disorient targets and launching smash has a knockdown chance.

I hope that filled you in, I dont think theres more i could add...

Staff fighting has been suggested before, and if you added in a staff to the list of custom forms I'd even like it. I think it even made the official shortlist of possible future sets at one time.

To be honest, I don't think the powers need much explanation since they would follow the basic pattern for all melee weapon sets. If you look at them, they are all about the same with a couple of stylistic differences.

I'd see it more as a Scrapper set than a Stalker one. There's a story of a ninja assassinating someone with a spear having spent a couple of days hiding in a castle privy for this purpose, but aside from that, spears are not, I think, typical weapons of assassination.

who said all stalkers were ninjas? and i see your point, but as long as you could sneak up to someone and drill your polearm into them, then its a stalker possibility (and they wouldnt want to miss out on another powerset now would they?)

the reason i didnt putt a staff down was that most of the weapons have a sharp edge, smaching someone with a staff wouldnt cut them open unless you sharpened it like a pike.

I didn't. It's the only example I ever read of assassination by polearm, that's all. Hard to hide a polearm to sneak up on people in real-life.

I'm sure they wouldn't like to, but it doesn't mean they would get it either. Capricious things, game developers.

Yeah, buts thats because you arent trained to, or can turn invisible many things in the game go against the laws of Physics.

Think about snooker (not that is goes against physics), the assissination would be near enough the same as hitting the ball but crouching down, agile and easy.

BAB has talked about a Polearm set, he says it would be a lot of work to create all the new animations (it wouldn't be able to recycle any old ones) which pushes it quite a long way down the priority list. However it is also something he would quite like to do, given the time.

As has already been pointed out, the game already has plenty of smashing (highly resisted) damage sets, but I would see it as a mezzimg/combo using set.

Another consideration is it wouldn't be compatable with the new Shield set.

I really should do something about this signature.

Polearms/Staves would be a very good one to use the combo system to me, coming more from a Bo Staff perspective.

Yeah, but if they did theyde have to come up with more new effects and would have to lower its damage like Dual Blades, but I can only see this appearing as the next new melee set.

It isnt compatible with shields, but has a defensive capability with the ricochet power to compensate for it, maybe the powerset itself has a + defense against melee.

yeah give it a similar combo system to dual blades but give it a overall low damage rate compaired to other weapon powers from scrappers

The problem would be more that the current powerset selection mechanism doesn't lock out some secondaries based on your choice of primary. However, Shields won't work with Dual-blades, so they will have to add that mechanism in if/when Shields goes live.

It's WHEN shields go live, most assuredly.

I would absolutely LOVE to see this as a power set. I can see it more as a combo set though. Maybe with a tinsy bit of mez since there's a lot of pointless swinging usually involved before actually hitting the target. =P

I can see CoH getting a Dynasty Warrior theme if this actually happens...AWESOME!

lol so can I but still! There aren't really any more super powers left to add in =P

I say 'if' purely because Shields have been 'coming soon' for such a very, very long time and were, at one point, totally rejected as causing far too many animation problems.

I think most of those problems were if it was being use as a weapon - like throwing it and having it return to you.
The devs have since siad it'll just be a defense power, and they've already started using a version of it with the new Roman mobs.

Apparently when/if shields goes live, blue steel (the trainer in kings row) becomes a hero NPC with the shields power, villains can fight him at some point, somtething to do with the PPD I reckon. possibly in the highest bank mission or a new story arc

That's just player speculation.

However I know there are a lot of heroes who would like to pound Blue Steel, because of the Clockwork King.

Statesman_4_Prez, did you mean Obliteration for the T9 power? I don't want to be picky, but if you're going to make a post purely to suggest power names, then getting the names right is probably a good start

I'd like to beat him up with my villains just because he's always rescuing the signature villains I go to such trouble to defeat - it's getting kind of predictable

Yeah I did, I always spell things wrong like that but you get the Idea of what I meant, and how come it took so long to notice?

Not looking at the forums on Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues probably played a part - and yesterday I couldn't be bothered

Well, heroes always escape or are rescued - if they weren't, then evil would win and the game would finish
