War Walls.
Paragon Wiki usually has the answers though not much in this case. You could also look into the War Wall Defender badge.

By the dawn of the 24th, Paragon City had been effectively divided into a patchwork of human and alien controlled neighborhoods, with constant combat raging at every border. Both sides began to erect walls and other static defenses to secure their territory. Many of these border defenses eventually became the walls that currently divide Paragon City into its many neighborhoods. (Source)

Ironically the first thing that happens when the Rikti invade a zone is they switch off the War Walls.
So they work well

Well the war walls obviously fulfil a far more important role for the game engine than however they've been explained in the lore. Other games use mountains, water and other impassable natural features to block off the edges of discrete zones - obviously most of those wouldn't have worked here thematically.

I can't see it happening, not before CoH2 (arguably just as unlikely) - for the Devs to make the Paragon City gameworld seamless would take a completely new game engine, not to mention a lot of work to fill in all the gaps between the discrete zones we have now. Geographically, if you look at maps of the city (the in-game one, or the one from GvE), only about half of Paragon City is present in the zones we have now, if that - hence why we sometimes get instances (like that ancient graveyard one) that don't actually exist in an existing zone - they're assumed to be between the war walls in areas we can't usually get to.
I've always been really into the whole War walls thing, It's one of the big major things you see as soon as you enter the game, yet there is such little lore around them.

Have you done Phillipa Meraux's badge mission yet? She's a Founder's Fall contact. I think that's about the only mission that specifically mentions War Walls outside of the background lore. It gives that War Wall Defender badge that MrTPF mentioned earlier in this thread.

I got that badge the day before the Rikti's second invasion.
I saved the War Walls from Rikti sabotage! Yay me!
Next day, invasion... well I did a great job there!

Pretty sure that a year or more back the devs mentioned that the war walls may come down... of course a lot has changed since then with the IP buyout and NCNC formation.
I'll see if my search-fu is up to finding the thread about it.. there was certainly one on these forums (And I'd guess in General Discussion).
EDIT: search fu came up trumps... though it was a while back (August 2006). This thread discusses the possibilities after the devs had mentioned that the war walls may come down after the zone revamps that started with Faultline.

A curious thaught occurs to me: If the war walls come down, will that mean the "defend the war walls" mission will be removed too? If so get it whilst you can badge, hunters!

I wouldn't panic yet - all we have is a rather obscure and probably outdated statement about war walls coming down - which could have referenced anything from war walls coming down briefly during rikti raids, to the war wall in northern Steel Canyon coming down when they finish building the space-port (as the GvE map seems to show a rebuilding effort and new area north of steel as far as the sea) - and no other information to go on.
Sure, rampant speculation is cool, but I wouldn't be getting my knickers in a twist about badges disappearing yet
Positron said the walls were coming down but the question is how you interpret that...

Hello, Keeping this short.
I've had a quick troll around the Internet and I can't find any real lore on the War walls, does anyone know where I can find some?
Thanks.
