Ice/Elec - capped Ranged Defense

Looking into IO sets for an up and coming Ice/Electric Blaster, I had started with a build maxing out health regen and mez resistance.
THEN, after reading THIS thread on the US forums I started working on ranged defense.

36.6% Defense to Ranged attacks! Can imagine that coming in very handy for a blaster.
I DO like to work in-close and personal, but they are usually held before I move in.

Keep in mind, I do play PvP on occasion, and want to maximize the build for it, without giving up too much PvE usefullness.

Question is:
I will be giving up over 100% health regen,
(From 266% in Res(Mez) build down to 162% for this Def(Ranged) one)
and I am wondering if it is worth it?
Will the ranged defense give me as much benefit as that insane regen rate? Or maybe better to go for a mix of the two?
Maybe someone has a completely different idea?

Here's my current actual build for my Ice/Elec who performs beautifully in PvE, but not made for PvP at all. Has a lovely amount of damage/ accuracy/ recharge bonuses and several handy procs.
On your anti-mez build, why not just take break frees? AFAIK the mez resist only lowers the time you are mezzed for, and doesn't actually protect you so not overly useful for PvP. If you can mess my build around to have CJ/SJ/Acro and aid self, you might have a PvP monster.

Whats the point in having so much ranged defence ( and paying a lot for the IOs for it) when you have so many PBaoe/melee attacks?

Also 100% regen isn't actually as good as it sounds, as base regen rate is pretty low.

Very nice build there Git_Elfling. I can see we have VERY different play styles.
Bet you can really tear into the mobs with that frost breath, ice storm AND blizzard!

Ok yes, I agree it is rather pointless to spend so much just to shorten the time you would be mezzed.
I pretty much scrapped that idea, although the regen was nice.
Then again, like you say Death_Badger, 100% regen is still not all that much.

The idea with Ranged defense on a blapper is that I hardly EVER get hit mele by more than 1 foe.
Pick a Hard Target, hold, slam em to the ground and make a fast kill, then range a few and move in on the next.
So... I'm mostly getting hit by ranged (or AoE).

If things start getting so hairy that I'm being pummeled by mele attacks;
Personal Force Field + heal, then buff up and start over.
It just seemed to me the ranged attacks would be doing me the most harm.

A blapper with massive mele defense would only get a marginal benefit.
Some mele hits geting through that defense, PLUS all ranged attacks = you eating carpet.

OR, maybe I'm thinking about this all wrong?
WOULD it be better to have good mele Defence?
*Or is defense on a blapper just a waste and better spent on recharge/damage?*

I've generally just solo'd with this build (mainly because of the cash needs!); 3 single target holds allows me to take on most things solo no problem. In team environments, yeah ice storm and ice breath and blizzard (followed by power sink) work the damage up nicely.
The high ST damage from ice and elec lets me solo EBs without too much problem (except blooming carnies for some reason).
If you're on defiant, I'll look you up when i'm on next to show you how it goes.
Defence is nice when you see the occassional "deflected" but you'll be mitigating damage in so many other ways I don't find it necessary. Recharge is definitely your friend with ice.

I personally would prefer health and regen over ranged defense, seeing as there is a lot of blasters around, the extra health is really needed. Ranged defense wont make a differece to a blaster once hes used his BU+Aim.

Also the extra HP and regen will help you in situations when fighting a melee clas such as a Brute or Stalker.

i would also recomend slotting 3 rech on your BU+aim, you will want them as often as possible when fighting stronger targets, Blaster fights nowadays are kill the other person before they kill you :P

Ok, well it was a fun project just to SEE what kind of defense a blaster could get.
Now that you guys put it like that though, I see the error of my ways.
Defense is so borked in PvP, it would indeed be a waste.

Sooo.. off to work on another build.

Aye, 6% extra isnt hard to find . Build is ok Dread_Dave but its alot cheaper to get 20% extra HP just from accolades. Try and up the recharge in your chain aswell
