Cosplay Help - Helmets

Howdy howdy party people...

I'm just looking at creating a helmet like Turf, my troller, wears. It's the usual full-head one:

Clicky

I've found a couple of helmets on eBay that may prove to be a good starting point, but I thought I'd just ask if anyone has tried to make one of these before, and if they've got any tips or comments? (Or those that haven't, if you have any ideas?)

click here for the kind of thing I'm looking to start with... If I sealed the gaps round the visor and then coated it with primer and paint, I reckon I could get a fairly similar look.

What do you reckon?

And glue on the antennaes on the sides. Could work.

...and I want to see you wearing it at the next comic con

Yeah I think that Motorbike helmet idea would work. Have fun building it

The helmet could work.

Personaly I would start from scratch, use a wire/card frame and use papermache or Fosshape 300 (or any other brand of heat moulded material).

Layers of papermache can be fairly rigid and then toughened with varnish, paint or isoflex.

If you have helpfull assistantes you can make a plaster mold of your head fairly and use that to work on if needed, or just work directly on your own head ,though that is kinda daunting

I know the RSC use fibreglass and reinforced papermache for some of their prop armour, and they can take a hel of a battering.
Fibreglass requires a bit of experience though, and tends to be costly unless you are making multiple copies.

If you need more props, check ebay too, you can find some great deals on various helmets there, had my eye on some old fighter pilot ones for a while

...Oh and Geoffrey, these may be of help.

I also advise going to your local skip/dump/waste refuse/recycling centre and going to the metal/tech disposal part, you may be able to 'acquire' some microwaves,Tvs, video recorders, hi-fi's and kitchen appliances you can rip apart for spare parts for the tech (even if you do have to buy it cheaply or bung the staff a tenner to look the other way).

[edit]: theres also materials like this that you can buy.

Great links Mum! G, what are you making the helmet for may I ask? Will it be for decoration, or are you planning to wear it?

Thanks party people, some great suggestions there

And it'd be to wear, Mystie. After a bit of hunting around, it might be that the helmet is the easiest thing to do. Finding some lightweight/comfortable boots that aren't... well, women's, is gonna be quite a challenge

Good for you Geoffrey!,

I'd be in awe of a great cosplay outfit (worn or just displayed) of their toon at a convention/playermeet.
Good luck with building your character's helmet Geoffrey!, maybe let us know how you're getting on with the production and everything on this thread, it would be an Interesting read.

Gopher it!, who cares what anyone else thinks, you know you'll look good!

Are you used to wearing a motorbike helmet?
I ask because I found it very difficult to find one I could wear comfortably (I'm apparently restricted to about two makes because of the shape and size of my head!) so it might be an idea to go into a bike shop and ask to try on a similar helmet before you bid on one.

Never worn a helmet before

Trying some out is the plan, anyway. I can see it now... Me, a geek, trying out helmets for cosplay, and a big burly guy dressed in leather trying to talk to me about motorbikes.

Just be honest dear, pretending you are into Motorbikes will just get you deeper in trouble. Just say you need one for your crimefighting duties as you are A Superhero!.
<don't forget to put your hands on your hips, puff out your chest and raise your jawline slightly, moving your head to the left and gazing to the horizon with a bold expression as you say it>

... If that fails to impress said leatherbound biker, tell him he looks like a Dual pistols/Thugs MM - explain that there is both biker jacket and Biker boots on the costume options, explain the animation entrance of 'the enforcer/bodyguard' and at the very least we will get a new subscription out of it.

See!, who said Mumsy doesn't give out good advice.

Well... they're heavier than you might expect. Personally, I wasn't ever able to wear the visor down unless I was going somewhere.. If you're planning to wear it for a considerable length of time, it might be more comfortable (although more labour-intensive) to make a helmet from scratch.

I would suggest, from looking at the screenshot, a more comfortable option might be to start with something like a balaclava and build the front part of the mask- with papier mache as DavidG suggested or with latex- and attach it to the balaclava. You can then either leave the back unmodified- it does look quite close-fitting in the screenie- or make a separate back part so that the balaclava can stretch between the two sections for you to put it on, but once it's on the two parts look seamless.

EDIT- Vox just suggested a boxing helmet as a framework- they're quite close fitting so it could be worth looking into.

Cheers for the comments again guys

I really hadn't thought about a weight issue. Call me stupid, but it just hadn't cropped up
Your suggestions are neat, but I don't want to spend too much time on it, and I feel that starting like a boxing helmet or balaclava would take too much to make it look half decent (Plus I'm not /that/ dextrous with my hands. I'd probably come out looking like Jabba the Hutt)

Anyway, my friend suggested an American Football helmet as a base. They're (apparently) lightweight, so would be fairly decent for wearing for any length of time, and are still sturdy enough not to break should I sit on it accidently

(On a side note, you reckon I'd poke many people in the eye with them aerial things on the side? )

I recommend you salvage/get hold of 4 telescopic aerials the like you get on small hand held radios. For the deluxe version you should combine that with an intercom on the inside along with lights and a heads-up display. Maybe you can get 'power-aerials' (from somewhere like Halfords) to extend and retract on voice activation.

Any problems with tech, use this site, its great for ideas and I'm using it to construct my flying battle mech-suit for my grand entrance at the next playermeet.
I'm having a little trouble with the Jetboots at the moment, I can't seem to get beyond 20ft altitude and 40mph... I think i just need to lose a bit of weight and buy a new gyroscopic oscillator.

Telescopic aerials is a neat idea (Especially if I can get cheap power-aerials - hours of fun ^_^). I was already planning on an intercom style thing. When I was at Memorabilia taking a photo of a storm trooper, he did the whole "Chhk - Make it a good shot - Chhk" thing, and I orgasmed. So a definate lust-point.

Lots of neat stuff (and ... junk) on that site! Turf doesn't fly though, so I think there's not a lot there I could make use of... I'm interested in seeing what you come out with

On a side note, just found these boots, which are pretty perfect (Aside from being white, but I could give them a grey coat: http://img.costumecraze.com/images/v...0973-large.jpg

However they're size 9 in women's... I'd need a size 14, or there-abouts :/

The alternative is these
Which have got some funky curves going on, despite claiming to be 'unisex'

Oh, and I'm going to be bidding on an NFL helmet soon. Planning on making use of a plastic bin for the front section (cut up, obviously). I figure it's around the right size, light, curvy and fairly easy to work with.

Can't wait to get started ;D

Generally people find they have an "Arai" head or a "Shoei" head. These being the two most popular quality Motorbike helmets on the market, and people tend to find one more comfortable than the other. If you were going to go that route, as has already been suggested, it's definitely worth going into a bike shop to find out which you are.

The other thing to bear in mind if you are going to use a bike helmet is that because they are designed to protect your noggin from being smashed to bits on the road, they do fit very VERY snuggly, and so you'll find using them indoors with the visor down means that they'll steam up in about 10 seconds flat and you wont be able to see a thing! There are various devices on the market which reduce this; some are anti mist inlays for the visor, others are fighter pilot stylee attachments which fit over your nose and mouth in an attempt to direct the moisture down. I've found the latter work a lot better both indoors and outdoors. The other alternative to that seeing as you're going for the retro tech style of helmet would be to cut an eye slit in the visor, and paint the rest of it the same colour as the helmet? Not sure if that would look a bit naff though.

Ok, here we go...

Thanks muchly for the links you gave me the other day Mum, they were good, but not reeeally the kind of thing I think would be easy to start with.

Aside from that, I'd already bought this:

Helmet!

It doesn't fit well, I know... Despite being a "large", it's actually a very tight fit. There's lots of room in there that I'm not making use of. I'm guessing it was incorrectly listed as a Large Adult when in fact was a large Youth, or something.

No worries though, there's plenty of padding inside, as seen in the third panel on the image. I'll either trim it down a bit or replace it all.

Either way, I'm on my way now ;D

*6-Slots Thread Necromancy*

Hi, so I'm continuing with my helmet project.

It became pretty apparent that this was going to work better if I wore the helmet backwards, due to the slope in the game

helmet and the back being higher:

Helmet Side-Shot

This line shows where I intend to draw my eyeline. I'll probably go ahead with that next weekend:

Helmet Angled

I also purchased 2 more items. Firstly on the left of this pic are the ex-army ear defenders I got from my local army surplus

shop, which I intend to stick on the side of the helmet. The dude selling them was going on about ear protection grades and

"What gun do you have?". He seemed quite baffled when I replied "Oh, I don't have a gun, I have a controller. I just need

these for the shape really." - fun .
And the 2nd item is a mop bucket, which I chopped up and then realised I hadn't taken a pic, so put it back together.

Pre-Choppage

Anyway, finally here it is after I chopped it up for the front. Once the eye slot is in place I'll work out what angle it

needs to be at to work properly. I might need to cut a bigger hole in the base just so I can get my head in to it once it's

all closed off. So I might end up looking at making it sturdier somehow. Some sort of in-frame?

Post-Choppage

Anyway, just thought I'd let anyone who is interested know that I'm still planning on going ahead with it

Goodjob!, wondered how far you'd got with the project!
