What level was you and what level was he?
"hes a good tanker, knows what he is doing"
Its subjective, whats preferential to some people isnt to others, cant please everyone. I have my concept and I play it.
He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.

So for all those tankers, that rely on or believe that theres only one way of doing it....

No offence but people play how they want to play, and, as they pay their subs, it's their perogative, there is no right or wrong way to play, if you're not happy with a team there is always the option to make your excuses and leave
Now that's out of the way, different builds are better at different things, not many can cover all aspects of a role fully, for example, inv tankers are better at herding as their sheilds work better when surounded by lots of mobs, fire tankers on the other hand are better with smaller groups, the key is to adapt to each other's play style i think
Now if only a khelds taunt was auto-hit, I'd be able to tank with the best of 'em
I agree that not all can fulfil every role, but thats as much down to playstyle as it is build.
What i am saying is that if someone tells me that they are a GOOD tanker. I expect a lot of them.
I seldom have trouble with overzealous trollers/blasters messing up the spawn when i tank.
I think its because i close the distance from the team and the spawn very fast by jumping or flying and landing into the middle of the spawn. I have my first attack lined up before landing. Basically, since my team waits to attack until i touch down, there is few mobs in a team that escapes.
Also, by putting in taunt duration enhancments in invincibility, scattered mobs comes back to me and not the blaster who just nova:ed.

Yep I dont care about Luck of the Gambler in Invincibility. I'll be keeping my taunt durations right where they are.

Personally as a Blaster I would rather have the Tank Herd. Makes it much better with AoE, and Novas and the like. Plus as a Tank I find that A) Its Fun to Herd B) Its easier to control the aggro.
But hey Idk much about any other kind of tank than a Stone Tank. So maybe its different for other tanks.
I agree with Micron that people will play the way they want, whether its bad for the team or not.
Also I have only started herding very recently, and usually I don't focus too much on herding without a good (imo) Balanced team. In non-balanced team I would herd the one mob just to get them tightly grouped together. Obviously if close enough together I wouldn't bother too much.
Just my 2 cents.
I can't herd to save my life - corner-pulling ftw!

I'm relatively new to Tanking, got a Inv/Fire at lvl30 at the mo. But I do tend to herd most groups....not for the blaster, but for my own needs...I just find it easier to control the aggro when i've got the best part of a spawn trapped in my taunt aura, leaving me free to target and taunt anything thats broken off from the group and causing trouble to my team mates.
On the plus side... the regular team i'm with is very AoE heavy, so the tight groups make the 'Arresting' easier.
I'm not one of those people who say you must herd everything all the time, everytime. I try never to take more than a spawns worth...and in some cases the mobs are already tight, even better when they're melee heavy...they always come to you.
I'm still learning the Tanking ways...but its some of the best fun i've had on any toon.
Dont worry Im new too! (lvl 25 Stone Tank).
'the regular team i'm with is very AoE heavy,'
Heh, Im not lucky enough to have a 'Regular' team. :P So alot of the time I resign to just going with the Flow. Seeing as about 50% of the time I end up joining a team who dont seem to know what a tank is actually for. ¬.¬.
And yes Tanking is great fun! Can't wait for Granite armour. ^^
Had an interesting incident occur a few days back, which i have made a post about elsewhere, but part of this incident involved a heated discussion about Tanking techniques.
The person with whom i was sharing this exchange, insisted that the only way to tank was to herd, and let a blaster nuke. My retort was that actually this was slower DPS then normal aoe's due to the delay caused by the recharge and side effects of blaster nukes.
I was explaining to him that herding is not always (in fact i would say rarely) the best way to tank, and that i would much prefer to point blank a mob then herd pull, unless the mobs are close together and its for the good of the team.
Bear in mind this guy was Inv/EM which is a horrible combination imo. (please note that im referring to PvE before you PvPers get the hump).
He was quite simply not budging and constantly screaming at me to herd and then at the blaster to nova. Needless to say we started ignoring him quite quickly and just carried on our business.
This whole conversation brought something to my attention. Gameplay seems to move in trends, One week the game seems inindated with badly built kamikazee tankers who try to over do it. So we pull away and try to coax them into proper tanking. Maybe we pull to far, maybe not. But the next week we find that tankers are being over cautious and what would take and experienced team ten minutes, is taking the team with this tanker two hours.
Of course the technique a tanker uses depends a lot on his build and the team he is with. AN inv/em tanker is pretty much gonna have to rely on the team as they are lacking in AoE's with any serious dmg. One thing i do think is important is to clear things up at the very beginning. theres nothing worse for a tanker then jumping into a mob. and before his taunt aura has even hit, the mob either gets launched across the room or they are immob'ed where they stand by the over zealous troller and now the aoe's dont mean squat.
So many posts about herding, and whether it is the best policy, or in some cases if we should do it at all. The important thing to remember is that a well built tanker can adapt to all situations, and master all styles of tanking. Any tanker who relies solely on one method and one method alone, needs to get themselves into terra volta, and back to the drawing board.
Ive been playing as a blaster a reasonable amount recently, and on a few occasions ive been asked to invite a tanker to my team, being told "hes a good tanker, knows what he is doing" and been sorely dissapointed. which leads me to believe that not only are there too many tankers who only know one method, but there are also too many teams who only know that one method. Fine if they stick together of course, but once they branch out into more experienced teams, they will have problems.
So for all those tankers, that rely on or believe that theres only one way of doing it....
