I would like too try a sonic/sonic defender, but I'm pretty much afraid too since everyone says it sucks and almost nobody wants them in a team. Any sonic/sonic vet's wanna share their experiences?

I dont think I see enough of them about. Buffs are superior to debuffs in many ways. Sonic is very fire and forget with no anchor worries. Great for any team really. People dont see what it is that you do or cant measure it and thats a problem. The new effects may create their own when its live.

I have a level 50 sonic/sonic defender and still enjoy playing it. Can play as offensive or sit back and buff. The Sonic attacks root but if your just doing PvE that doesn't matter. Sonic Resonance can't buff resistance to psychic however. I found it hard to solo but with Inventions its alot easier now.

Seconded.. Wholely agree with Stryker.

When I was levelling my sonic/sonic defender to 50 there were teams that didnt appreciate you but sure as hell missed you once you had left them. Part of the bias comes from the bad graphics that the set has been stuck with and some reports that the strobing effects were causing players distress. Now in the forth coming issue 10 there is a graphical change which not only should remove the distress problems but also make the powers more visable so that team members go "cool ive been bubbled". Find a warshade or peacebringer who plays in dwarf form / human form, shield em,buff em, debuff the enemys and pretty soon theyll wont want to go anywhere without a sonic

On a more general note, play with what you enjoy. Try it. If you dont like it, burn it, if you do then play. Your account, your money, your time

Hmm, I wouldn't say there were superior - I'd probably say they are at least about the same, with debuffs slightly ahead. In combat there are the big 4 attributes which are taken into account when you attack a foe: accuracy, damage, defence and resistance.

Defence buffs = ToHit debuffs
ToHit buffs = Defence debuffs
Resistance buffs = Damage debuffs

So far everything is equal provided the buffs have the same percentage effect as the debuffs they will both do the exact same thing. However:

Damage buffs < Resistance debuffs

As resistance debuffs work on your total (enhanced) damage rather than your base damage (as damage buffs do), you will do more damage with a resistance debuff on a foe rather than a damage buff on you, provided you have slotted your attacks for damage.

Therefore debuffs are superior (just) in terms of numbers, although they are more 'active' and need more attention than buffs, which as you say are mostly fire and forget powers with long durations.

Debuffs vary on what your up against, enemies vary in debuff resist, buffs are there and 'stand' so to speak. Buffs also arent subjected to tohit requirements like some debuffs or location of enemies and they dont entale aggroing like many. A resistance bubble for example is more often greater than any damage debuff. More often Id much rather a sonic bubble than any damage debuff going against what Id actually consider tough, like an AV. When it comes to types of defenders though, I dont get picky.

For sonic attacks, look into my kin/sonic build if you want, you'll find it in this same page. I have taken a good amount of sonic powers (almost all of them).

As for sonic resonance, my only toon with it (a grav troller) is only level 7 so I can't really give good advice...

Xanthus wrote a good sonic/sonic guide which is in the Guides section (although it was written before IOs).

CoX 50s: <ill/rad> <ice/ice> <fire/kin> <grav/sonic> <ice/storm> <earth/kin> <kin/elec> <cold/psy> <thugs/dark> <fire/dark> <dark/elec> <night widow> <EM/ninj> <mind/icy>

Well if someone kicks you because you're sonic don't take it personally. There's been migraines, fits, headaches whatever caused by the sets.

BUT

If this is after Issue 10 with the new graphical effects then they don't know what they're missing. At lvl 30 I could triple the amount of damage a team mate was doing on a given target.

I have personally never been kicked on a team because I am playing a Sonic Defender. I think that's just wrong and maybe even griefing???

Aaanywayy I have a little question of my own.

What epic pools do people recommend for Sonic Sonic Defenders and how do I slot them? I'm thinking of going Psionic Mastery but not sure of the powers to take exactly.

Ermmm... and how exactly?

CoX 50s: <ill/rad> <ice/ice> <fire/kin> <grav/sonic> <ice/storm> <earth/kin> <kin/elec> <cold/psy> <thugs/dark> <fire/dark> <dark/elec> <night widow> <EM/ninj> <mind/icy>

By putting Disruption field and sonic siphon on a target. I tested it with a friend of mine before and after i debuffed the target. The damage was tripled.

They each give 30% -res so I don't see how the damage can be tripled. You sure there weren't any other (de)buffs involved?

CoX 50s: <ill/rad> <ice/ice> <fire/kin> <grav/sonic> <ice/storm> <earth/kin> <kin/elec> <cold/psy> <thugs/dark> <fire/dark> <dark/elec> <night widow> <EM/ninj> <mind/icy>

None that I am aware of. Just the disruption field and the Siphon. I'm more than willing to admit it if I'm wrong - do you happen to play on Union and we can test it out??

Posted

I do and I have them both on my /sonic troller, so will test it again although the numbers for trollers are lower (-22.5% each). Even if you stack more -res from your secondary, I can't see how you can get to x3 damage.

Okay so where and when do you want to meet. Like I say if i'm wrong it's no problem, but triple is the figure that comes off the top of my head.

Also, back to my original question:
What epic pools do people recommend for Sonic Sonic Defenders and how do I slot them? I'm thinking of going Psionic Mastery but not sure of the powers to take exactly.
