Vista and CoH

Heya folks

Few of me maybe wondered were I had got too, well this post pretty much explains it.

Playing CoH with the latest ATI drivers, the game seems far too bright to the point that I can’t play it. Also getting some curser issues, but I know that can be solved via compatibility cursor etc..

Anyone else have this brightness issue/know of a way of fixing it?

Looks as though I am forced to take a break for a few months, was really hoping issue 9 would sort some of it.

Thanks for any help.

Hello mate!,
kk i have the vista too and my coh cov was unplayable cos when i was getting in at the sleect character screen it was appearing so bad and ingame so much, it was solved; moving all the settings to defaulg and unstalling the nvidia drivers, and installing again, yes unstalling first manually dont install it directly cos in the US forums says it wont work.

and for the ppl who its looking for help with the mouse ill repeat this: yes the mouse will work if u add on the shortcut route the -compatiblecursors 1
so will look like this <font class="small">Code:[/color]<hr /><pre> </pre><hr />

( remember if u change the settings will fail again, and be patient the vista have just 2 months on the shops, wait for patches. and keep ur drivers news, cos mine now are just a beta version for vista... i have nvidia 7500 )

and for the ppl who its looking for help with the mouse ill repeat this: yes the mouse will work if u add on the shortcut route the -compatiblecursors 1

What you describe is exactly what you get with the default Vista drivers, are you sure you have the latest ATI drivers for Vista installed? The XP ones WILL install on Vista, they just won't work right.

I recommend you check your download, uninstall, and reinstall them to be sure. If it helps, the latest drivers for vista can be found here (32 bit ones)

I've just had a thought about the problems with CoX and Vista, does the problem remain if you use 'Run As' when starting the game?

For those that doesnt know you use 'Run As' by right clicking a shortcut (for example) chosing Properties -&gt; Compatibility and change in the dropdown list.

Cant check right now, but I rather suspect FFM has solved the issue.

I just presumed (with little computer knowledge) that when clicking the auto update driver button thingy, it would use the latest drivers. When I get home I'll try that thanks FFM.

I do use run as admin case that means anything Brimmy?

Thanks guys,

K

Ah, if you used auto-update, that only gets the ATI drivers from MS, which only have the most basic OpenGL functionality, which is what's causing your problem.

The 7.4 Catalysts from AMD will solve the problem.

Note: Release of the 7.5 Catalysts is due in the next few days.

Not what i meant, allthough running as admin is always a plus , i mean that you can run the game like another OS would, for instance 'Run As - Windows XP' even though your computer runs on Vista

You DO know that all that function does is make Windows return an earlier version number to the program in question, right? I've never seen it actually WORK either...

I solved this issue by installing older drivers for the mainboard and then the newest one for the vid. card.

Hi guys.

Posting for Krunch, naturally he doesnt want to "Sub" untill his game is working.

He tried downloading those 7.5's.
He selected purely the driver not the aswell CC.
The new driver applied fine (we think).

However when he then tried running CoH it got stuck on the "Loading" banner, the one that comes up for a few seconds when you run CoH.

So he's gone from having a game that had borked graphics, to no CoH at all.

Running DXdiag or whatever showed no issues.

Being a bit of a noob, he doesnt know what to do, must he delete the previous drivers or something? The ATI driver seemed to apply fine though.

Please help if you can.

S and K

PS: No he does not have any data folders in his CoH folder.

Make sure all old drivers are removed from the system before installing new ones. Try a program called DriverCleaner.

I would also go for the 7.4's myself; the 7.5's steal my 32bit graphics mode!

Vista DOES run CoH perfectly well, as long as you have decent drivers, including motherboard drivers.

Ok downloading the 7.4's now. Then I'll download that driver cleaner. I take you install the Control Centre aswell? Any settings on there that might have to be changed? The fact that we got CoH running although it was borked and that Ive played WoW (Using the auto update drivers), suggests that its not a motherboard issue at this time, does it not?

Thanks FFM youre being such a great help.

/Edit: Pfft we dont have $9 spare!

Ok we have tried running with those 7.4's still the same situation. Not being silly, but when you run the .exe ati driver package thing. When your finished, theres nothing left to be done? We have not missed a step have we?

I cannot think of anything else..

Display mode of 85Hz wouldnt be a problem?

Or that DX 10 is used?

Its weird, the little red light thing blinks away happy as lary while booting CoH up, yet the screen never changes from the "Loading" banner.

S and K

Little more info, from Dxdiag.

Main Driver: atiumdag.dll, atiumdva.dat, atitmmx. (goes of screen)

Version: 7.14.0010.0489 (Eng)

WHQL Logo'd: Yes

DDi Version: 9Ex

I install the CC, but it's not really needed TBH.

CoH doesn't use DX10, it's an OpenGL game (DX9 is used for the game interface). Which card is your friend using BTW? I don't see any mention of the model in this thread. The spec of the rest of the machine would be usefull also.

If you are using a flat panel monitor then a display mode of 85Hz is wrong - it should be 60Hz - that may explain why you don't see the game screen?

Radeon 9600.

Ive done a bit of reading on the issue, quite a few people are having the same problem, for varying reasons.

@ A data file is present in CoH directory thing. - No
@ Issue with Dual Core Processors - No
@ Issue with drivers etc - Probably

Im pretty sure it just to do with the driver, unfortunatly for all the research of finding others who have the problem, hardly anyone gave any good advice. Ie: Its a driver problem, Or I dont know etc..

Its Vista Ultimate btw.

32 bit.

1 gig of RAM.

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Processor.

Alright its not a state of the art machine by a longshot, the annoyance is with the fact that it worked fine untill Vista was used..

He's put the 7.4's on and the Control Centre this morning, no good.

Tried running in varios modes etc.

Please keep the help comming guys.

Thanks,

S and K

Reduce the refresh rate to 60hz, to test if that's the problem.

Sadly not.

More suggestions?

It looks to me like either no chance of playing CoH or reroll XP when a day is free..

Shame, but we cant figure this out!

Have you tried CoH in safe mode yet? There's a tickbox for it on the launcher.

EDIT: Also, make sure you're running it as administrator, and in the shortcut for the icon, edit the Compatibility tab to disable desktop composition. CoH doesn't like it.

I'd suggest going in to the Catalyst Control Centre and put back all the settings to the default. Then from personalize on the desktop select display setting - ensure that you select the resolution and colours from this screen (do not use the advanced settings / list all modes as that will list things you may not actually be able to display).

Once you have reset your Windows system to operate at the default display settings get yourself a copy of TweakCOH (google will find it for you) and ensure that the settings for the game client (under display) are set at the same screen settings as the windows client.

Do a reboot and see how it goes.

FFM - I'm not running CoH as administrator (thought the UAC prompts me to permit it to run each time I launch it from the PlayNC launcher). I've also not had to disable desktop composition - maybe the issue with CoH and that has been sorted? Like the person here with the problem I'm running Vista Ultimate but with a Radeon X1300.

Doing these things now. Report back in 5 minutes.

Ok Ive noticed with TweakCoH (after figuring to select EU CoH, Duh!) That the figures I set eg: 1280X960 85 hrtz, keep reverting back to 43 hrtz and the same res. Is this intentional?

K and S

/edit: Solved the issue of reverting stuff.

Ok I did those steps, even changed my settings to windows classic. Seemed to me there was a lot more activity than normal, maybe were getting closer, I dunno just feeling positive.

On the other hand it didnt work still stuck at the Loading Banner.

My res is 1280x960 and my colours are 32 bit. Any more info or ideas you guys have please do air them.

Thanks for the help guys, keep it coming!
