Teamspeak - advice please!

Hello all

I have had several requests from our SG members to put some form of teamspeak system into place.

Now i am sure that this is all very simple but for some reason i do not seem to be able to make a decision and do it

I wonder if there are any of you out there that have teamspeak or know about it and if so i would really appreciate some advice.

I would welcome suggestions as to which one to use, how i do it, whether it costs anything, how many people can talk at the same time etc etc.

Many thanks in advance
Von

Maybe better in the player questions section. I am also looking at teamspeak options so would be fairly interested in any answers myself.

Meh, you'll probably be able to get away with just using the free channels supplied by the makers. Had a number of people in my SG ask me to set it up but in the end only one person ever bothered using it. At least if you use the free servers for a trial run you won't end up forking out for something that's not going to get any use.
From people who used it in WoW the general oppinion seems to be that it can be very problematic since, like in life, if multiple people try to talk at the same time you can't make out what's being said, but unlike in life you can't see when someone is about to say something and also it may not be as clear as to who should go first.

TeamSpeak is fairly inexpensive. If you'd like to see a list of prices, try HERE - it's the hosting company I use for the Forumites TS server. Whenever technical problems have arisen in the past, the customer service people have always been helpful, friendly and approachable, and send updates on problems directly to my inbox, whether the problems are still affecting me - they make me feel like an important client, and, even though I know it's an automated message, it's still a nice feeling. I have maybe 99% uptime on a 20 slot server that costs me £54 a year.

As for people talking over each other, that CAN be problematic, given that some people will naturally get drowned out, or potentially ignored (not intentionally, but if eight people are doing one thing which is fairly concentration-heavy, and one person wants to show the other eight people a funny video or picture they found, it CAN happen) but if you're all doing something which requires organisation, no matter the circumstances, people will always talk over each other. It just tends to be a little bit more...painful...on TeamSpeak.

TS also has a few extras that can be downloaded - the TeamSpeak Admin Client (I can't remember where I got this from, sadly) is a very useful tool when you're not running a game, and the unofficial TeamSpeak Overlay will help you get used to recognising voices pretty quickly, too.

For the last 5 or so years me and my comrades have been sharing a server hosted in US we have been allowed to use it for free we never interfere with each other it's just polite and the admin is a sound guy some of your may know them on your travels on other games as they are very diverese they go by Allied Tribal Forces but other clans/guilds are on there aswell i've tried to get my SG TS'd up but they are reluctant to say the least

I've used Ventrilo in the past, quite a bit actually. It's certainly more expensive than Teamspeak, but we never had any complaints with it.

Mind you, it's been awhile since I last used it. Might be worth looking at though.

Vent(rilo) is okay, and usually the more favored of the voice programs, as TS2 are sometime more expensive as well, but with TS2 you pay for quality... I'm currently using a 14man server off jolt.co.uk which costs me about 20 quid for 3 or 4 months.

If anyone needs help setting up a ts2 server once they've got one, just gimme a shout, its simple and can be done easily in like 10mins... but dont ask me about vent as I wouldn't have a scooby

Have used both TS and Vent and have the clients for both running, personally I would say Vent is by far the superior client, however all the Vent server licensing deals are paid ones, whilst TS does allow certain server usage on free packages. I've been meaning to try a reinstall of the TS2 server software on my PC for some time - seeing as I can't remember the superadmin password and need to dig out my public IP address.

OK Von I've got the server up and running again and set up a few basic channels. Give me a shout and I'll let you know the IP. You can post it up as MOTD but I'd rather it not appear on a public website. Its currently set up for 50 users but the non commercial licence allows up to 100 if we need them.

Need someone to report back that it is accessible anyway - I think I've got the router set up to port forward correctly.

Howdy doo!

Team Speak is awesome, aslong as you can get players using it. I've been paying for Super Union's Server for over a year now from Jolt it costs as little as £5 a month. At first it was a stuggle getting everyone using it, you just need to stay on their case and they are happy you did once they're online. I'd say 12 or more of us don't go in game with out getting on TS first and atleast 80% of the SG have access to it for any events.

One great thing about Jolt is I find it very straight forward and easy to upgade if need be, for example we recently made an attempt at raiding Hamidon and I was able to upgade to 50 players instead of out usual 18 man server for the month, for a price obviously.

Hope this helps.

TS is well worth it. Can't imagine gaming without it and wouldn't have anyone in the group who didn't use it.

We have a jolt server, which is paid for jointly by a few members, can't remember offhand what it costs but it's not that much. Few quid a month.

Main problems with "people talking over each other" (just doesn't work, only one person can transmit at once) tend to be caused by people having voice activation on (which will likely give you a horrendous echo as their mic picks up everyone elses voices coming back through the speakers, in addition to their music and whatever other delightful noises they make while alone at the PC). Make sure everyone has push to talk enabled (Settings / Sound Input-Output Settings / Push to Talk) and you solve half your issues in one go.

Well they used to have all mice and keyboards white for a reason...

so is it feasible to have music on as well as TS then? cos i sure play better with some Iron Maiden or Hammerfall in the background...

If you're using a headset, it's fine as long as it's not too high volume to drown out the speech. If you're using speakers, it depends on how well your mic catches sounds, if it catches the music, it can be annoying to other people on the server.

I'll try very hard not to think about that when I'm chating to people on teamspeak later.

Me and my SG do it though X-Fire, it's free and easy to use, and it's good also to talk cross game if anyone plays any onther games, so far me and my SG have had no problems what so ever with using it, all you have to do is host the voice chat or get someone else to do it, it's fairly low on memory useage and the sound quality is great.

If I'm ever on TS with you I'll have to remember to play THAT scene from Deliverence over the TS.

If you gonna host it yourself, its free but its far from perfect. The better quality codec you gonna use together with more people online, the more upload it takes, the more lag you have.

There are thousends of companies out there renting out TS servers, price often vary on rights, admin, ammount of people, public/private etc.

I have a 40 channel private server, all channels with highest codec and a very usefull admin panel for a 8GBP a month. Not the cheapest, but its a very reliable.

I have to say that Teamspeak is easier in a way to use. Xfire has beter quality but for the comon users that are just starting i would suggest Teamspeak. This is much better if your lazy :P lol

I prefer X fire but i use Teamspeak also.

An no i skype aint that great for using. It generates more bandwith then any other Voip communication program.

Another good thing that xfire has then Teamspeak it the echo forming someone can create unnoticed by using a broken headset. I noticed this problem multiple times on Ts and never on Xfire.

further on you can rent a server but thats not adviced got to http://www.goteamspeak.com/ there you can check everything out and see what is possible they also explain how to set up your own server and let you download the files
. Hosting your own teamspeak is free of any charge Letting another host it ( officiel company ) cheapest is about 2 pounds in teh months if i am correct. So its better to set one up one your own.

I hope i helped out a bit... GL with picking an Voip communication program. It does help a lot in games

have fun
