I'm sure you could find a use for such an item on so many of your toons, Marq... 
Due to a combination of a lovely graphics card, lousy teething problems and elbows deep in electrical innards, I may or may not be able to make it for the Trapper night tomorrow. 
If I don't see you all, rest assured it's because I'm working as hard as I can to get my new PC sorted. Conversely if I do see you, it's because I'm slacking off and using my housemate's PC!

If it's fighting you that much, then take it all apart, down to a bare chassis. Threaten all components thoroughly by looking at them meaningfully while holding a 2 1/2 lb lump hammer, then check all slots, connectors and so forth are clean and reassemble slowly and methodically. (Make damn sure that your RAM is well seated and that the CPU cooler is properly aligned and seated, using the appropriate amount of thermal compound)
Using a different machine, go online and grab all the newest drivers for your hardware from appropriate sites (including motherboard chipset drivers), see if there's an updated BIOS available on the motherboard manufacturers website, and drop 'em all on a USB stick.
Reinstall OS from scratch, install all new shiny drivers and Service packs/patches, install this, install that, spend 8 hours watching progress bars, then try booting the game up again.
And if it still doesn't work, it's time to start the chicken sacrifices to the god of hardware fault diagnosis. Which is a black art in and of itself - 25% logic, 50% intuition and 25% blind luck.

Well I logged in again for a laugh and managed about 3 minutes of sublime lag-free motion in GV before whatever's happening, happened again.
Thanks for the advice Canine, though I've not exatly been hard at it since I chatted to you last night - there is such a thing as going to work that got in the way. Early days yet, but that heatsink possibility scares me badly.

Try and get a system monitor application running, and get it to log CPU temp, GPU temp and Voltage rails (+12, +5, +3.3 and Vcore).
Just thought about voltages. It's possible that the glitches are due to your PSU not quite being up to the job (among many other possible causes, I hasten to add). if you've got a duff PSU, then voltage spikes can cause a PC to fail randomly. If the drain from your GPU is dragging the 12V rail down too low, then hello, system instability.
Been there, done that. And PSU's are almost always one of the last things people check if they're having stability issues. Oh, and a new PSU does not guarantee a working PSU. I've had a brand new Tagan arrive broken. The replacement died after a month or so, and I've sworn never to touch a Tagan PSU with a barge pole ever again since something like 4 or 5 have been through this house and all have failed, but I digress.
This is why some sort of data logging system monitor application is so useful. But finding one is up to you, since I use the one that came with my motherboard, and it's seriously unlikely to work with your machine.

I installed and ran a temperature monitor last night while running CoH to crashing point - the temperature of the CPU & GPU was well within normal levels when it happened so it's unlikley to be the heatsink at fault now.
The PSU is brand new but, as you say, it could be faulty. I'll get a voltage monitor and try that tonight.
Swap all the internal gubbins with the ones inside your house mates PC. When he/she says the same thing is happening to there computer, just say "Oh, I ran my virus checker then done a reinstall. You should try that!".

Doesn't solve the issue of an approx £500 bill for parts that may as well be paperweights tho... I've too much invested in this and there's no turning back now. I will get this fixed.
I will certainly be around tonight for Trapping, on another PC at least.
I'm going to be a bt late, alas, since this particular PC needs to download the latest patches... I'll try and be on for 8:00-8:30. Hopefully I'lll see you then!

But seriously, while there have been some breakthroughs on that front and *fingers crossed* it is fixed now, it's currently staying at a friend's place where it was repaired and it's not likely I'll be able to pick it up in time before the theme nights this week!
So if I'm on, I'll be on my housemate's PC.
How did it go then last night?
It was an entertaining evening. I selfishly concentrated on Mea's patron arc since she was nearing lvl 41 and didn't have the PPP unlocked yet. By the end of the night she'd attained both, too.
My favourite moment fo the night was our musings about messing with the game's word filter to replace phrases such as "Lord Recluse" and "Arachnos" with, for example, "Ronald MacDonald" and "Ikea"...
