Zortel's collected artworks!

Finally got my scanner hooked up to this PC (Well, this PC is my CoH machine, my laptop be my forum machine), and so have scanned and uploaded my piece for general viewage, as well as having a place to put new pieces as I work on them.

Some of my older pieces from 2001-2002 are included, from when I did GNVQ art.

So, firstly:
Art Collection 1
This is a collection of various bits I did during Art and Design, mostly characters and the like. Top Left is a geeky character from a story I wrote way back when, one of my few attempts into colouring too. Top right down are more random characters, and bottom left is one of the better bits of shading I've done, for a character from the same story as the guy above.

Art Collection 2
Mostly just random sketches, some done from photographs and others from memory.

Art Collection 3
These are mostly more recent pieces, sketches done at college in class mostly, showing how badly lack of practice can affect drawing over a period of 5-6 years.

GNVQ Final Piece - Ceran
My first main piece coloured on a PC, done for my final unit of GNVQ Art and Design. Was rather pleased with how he came out.

Emel
A more recent attempt at shading (Around... 2 years ago), which isn't as well defined as the piece in Art Collection 1.

Fusebox - Old Style
This is one of Fusebox done around... may 2005, back when she still had the spikey hair. I used a screenshot as reference, but she looks a little rigid, plus I'm not too pleased with the shading.

Isaac 1
A basic line sketch of Isaac Anderson, drawn when I was heading down to London on Thursday. As you may gather from later on, he is one of my favourite characters to draw.

Isaac Anderson 2
Yet another one of Isaac, done a few months ago when I was bored in class. This was before I started practicing again, so it does look a little off in places.

Isaac Anderson 3
I rather like this one of Isaac, and not because he's shirtless The pose and the expression are rather Isaac-ish, something I was pleased I was able to capture, though the facial features could do with some work.

Juan and Isaac
A rough sketch done earlier today in pencils and then lightly inked, the expressions I'm not too happy with, especially Juan's, there's something about 3/4 profile facial features that I have troubles with.

Jane Darc
Everyone's favourite undead girl! A rough sketch done one lunchtime using a screenshot as reference, things I've noticed as off are the neck that seems a little too wide, and the left forearm (viewers right), but the right seems okay, as does the elevation.

Number Nine
And Jane's gynoid friend, Nene! I think the eyes were captured particularly well in this one, showing an expressiveness that makes up for her slight lack of facial features, though the left shoulder and facial shape seem a little off, the facial shape a bit too round.

Nene and Sophie Reynalds rough sketches
Some rough pencil sketches I did today. The top one is Nene with the longer hair she sometimes has, though there's something about the neck and right shoulder joining that doesn't seem quite right. Apart from Sophie's hand, I'm rather pleased with the way that one came out, especially her hair. Seems more dynamic than other ones I've done.

Minako
A drawing of Minako I did on the train down to London, the shape of the head is a little off, a bit too flat, I feel, and the hair isn't right, but that was done without any references whatsoever, the eyes are a big biger than I normally do them, mostly trying to capture the big-eyed shoujo-ness that befits a magical schoolgirl.

Minako 2
A bit more of a western-style Minako, done without any character references again. Still the problem with the hair, as well as the body. Still trying to work out on drawing the female form. Hips seem to be a problem, and the joinings between the legs. (To quote Dark_Stone: Woof!)

Mahou Shoujo Kei, Ikimasho!
Attempt 2 of 2 at drawing my magical girl character, using a screenshot mid ;warm up emote as reference for the pose. I seem to have real trouble dealing with the shirt and the left arm, plus the raised thigh to knee to shin looks off. Also having trouble with the facial expression on this one, perhaps due to the mask.

The Quartet (Isaac, Juan, Minako, Sophie)
A drawing done in my friends car of three of my characters, plus Hikari-Hime's Mina. This one is a bit more anime-style, though Juan's eyes are a tad too small. The hair on him and Isaac is a little off as well, though Juan's hair always seems to mess up for some reason, I don't quite know why.

And that's it for now. I'm armed with an 80 page A5 sketchpad, case full of pencils, a sharpener and a rubber, and ready to try and sketch more and improve for 2007!

Some good sketching there Z. Clear signs of progression and promise of some classy work in the near future. Lol.. my concern is with Mahou Shoujo Kei, Ikimasho - is it not a tab bit revealing?

Great, thanks for posting your sketches Zortel, I enjoyed looking at them. I think you're right, during the pause you've gone rather out of practice, but on the positive side, it shouldn't be too hard to catch up to it.

The pictures I liked the most are pretty much the ones you pointed out too. I think you suffer a bit from same fault as I do - the faces tend to get a bit skewed unless paid special attention to it. (I tend to take a look at the mirror-image of the picture I am drawing to get rid of that, either putting the paper against light or with mirror.)

Swissy's advice about doing circles and ellipses is very good and I'd like to see bow it looks like when you draw 'softer'.

My fav is Juan and Minako hugging, they look so cute, sweet and shy. (And from what little I know of the characters, that makes me giggle ^^). Isaac, looking cute and bishounen as always (he reminds me of the blonde of the webcomic of two guys that I don't remember the name of right now. One is small blonde who dresses like a punk, and the other is tall dark artist, Mihail or something.) Drawing glasses is difficult, and yep, good work with the elbow on Isaac.

I think you tend to draw quite thick necks usually, it just harder to notice in the guy pictures .

Someone else knows of Boy meets Boy! Now that you mention it, he does... I'm not sure why I love drawing him so much... I think it's just the general mix of attributes, from the collar, the spikey hair, the glasses.

And that's probably more Juan and Mina when they were first going out. Juan's quite a complex cookie. When first dating Mina, he was rather shy and quiet, and when he spoke he was rather peculiar and didn't use contractions like I'm and the like, now though he's gotten a bit more teenagery.

The necks, might come from being a little bull-necked and shouldered myself.

Oh, curious question: Does anyone else find there's a time of day they draw best at? The picture of Isaac, Juan and Mina, Isaac half-naked, they were done at night time. The picture of Jess and some of the other later ones, done at daytime. Hikari-Hime thinks I may be a wereartist. She may be right. o_O

I usually doodle during days and draw in the evenings / afternoons (when I do, which sadly isn't everyday), but I don't think it's so much the time of the day, as just sometimes I'm more in tune with it. Might be you're more relaxed / focused during night-time and can tune into drawing better? For me, it's more like there's whole days or stretch of days even when the pictures don't go where I want them to go at all. Very annoying. But changing medium/style sometimes works for that. (From pencils to watercolors, or straight to digital, or from realistic to manga or whatever).

PS. I thought you'd know Boy Meets Boy ^^ That was fun ^^

I find mornings and evenings are best for drawing, don't know why really, though sometimes while CoH is loading I get some good doodles done.

What?!? You mean... You're that good when you're not even concentrating on what you're doing?

Chibi-Isaac, cuteness! ^^ Very cute. I don't think the legs are too short at all for a chibi. It's great the way it is .

From the other pictures, the Grav Mistress is my favorite, in that you got much softer look to the drawing and lines, I like that. The tablet picture, I think you should try using a softer brush, now the line itself is "pixelated", when the line curves, there is 90 degree sharp angles.

Also, big /clap on the hands on Bishuju picture, that is very good. (I seem to have hand obsession... I keep commenting on how people draw their hands.)

I'm quite pleased with how Chibi-Isaac's expression came out, a fusion of cuteness, but still retaining Isaac's cheeky naughtyness which, I feel, gives the picture that 'I've been bad so I'm giving you a present to soften the blow' feel.

I'll have a fiddle around with my brush settings, I might have switched something off to get it like that, I'm sure I pressed -something- when I was fiddling about earlier.

With Sakura's picture, I was in the staff room, turned to my best friend and said: "Pose like Sailor Moon." She replied with: "I don't know how!" so after some bodily manipulation, got her in a pose to roughly sketch in the positions, I think her hoody is what made the shoulder look a bit out of place, but the hands came out well. It's swings and roundabouts sometimes, drawing is!

Oh, I normally use a gel pen (At least that's what I think they're called...) for inking, like with the Isaac and Sakura Hime picture, is this an okay kind of pen to use? I've noticed Swissy sometimes uses Biro, as does one of my friends, which when my friend does it he gets a bit more neater lines when cross-hatching to shade and doing finer detail work.

Edit!

Two new little drawings done at college! Juan, doing what uni students do best. The neck is a tad off in this picture, looking a bit too long.

Sophie, looking rather surprised at seeing a kitty.

I've come to the conclusion that... chibi's are cute... (except Isaac, as he can't be cute )
