tanking and how to advice on building them

Last night i was in a team with a inv/ss tank who only had 3 from his primary and this at level 23...
As i recall he had unyielding, resist physical damage and temp invulnerability..
He also had hover and fly and just about every secondary SS power..
He hardly used his toggles as they cost to much endurance..
The rest of us, me, the tank as well as someone else who also had a high level tank gave him some advice to think of for the upcoming respec im sure he was planning.

But then one tank laughed at my advice about Air Superiority insted of hover and told him to "pick Superspeed" instead..

Well thats where I draw the line of giving advice on builds..
Maybe the guy wanted to play a flying tank.. if thats the case why tell him to pick SS (or superjump or teleport for that matter, myself i plan on SS on my Stone/fire tank even though everyone tells me Teleport is the only way to go for Granite)
advice should be given to help someone build their character so it suits their playing style is what i think.
Inv/SS or Inv/EM for that matter tells me the player wants to play a Hulk or Superman school of tanking, throwing themselves at the opponent and bash away, not herd 17 mobs and then drag them around a corner and read a newspaper while the team kills off the mobs.
So naturally i advice on how to improve THEIR build, not turn it into something else.

How do you give advice?
DO you give advice on how to make it better from the players point of view, or from your own?
Be honest now..

Well, seeing as I do do quite a bit of builds for other people, I usually ask for preference concerning travel power, stamina (if char wit other +END powers), and any powers the set might have that some players don't like (Taunt, ToF, Follow up, to name a few). I then try to build the best possible character within those set boundaries.

My advice is limited to get your Aura and Mezz protection. I dont do more unless there is some glaringly stupid power like permafrost or jump kick in the build.

I do offer more if people ask as I have found just giving unwanted advice can upset people.

I tend to find that if I give advice as to how to build the most efficient character you can possibly be (Invariably by taking Jump Kick and slotting Temp. Inv. for recharge only) then they have all the info they need at their command.

If they have a specific concept they're building to, they can fit in my suggestions around that, and drop the fitness pool so they can have both fly and 6-slotted jump kick.

Basically, as long as they have as much info as possible at their command they can then go ahead and work out what they want for themselves. The important bit is to let them know WHY you're suggesting certain powers or slotting arrangements.

Give them the facts, that they are capable of making their own decisions. Happy days.

tbh the /ss tanker could take hurl but if he is going fly route then air sup is okay.

You need to get up a ledge quick, *turns off rooted* "OMG HELD!" Something had a hold duration on you whilst you were rooted. Thats partly why people take tp also whilst rooted you may only be as fast as somewhere near normal run speed.

Well you dont have to read the paper, perhaps you may want to make every different debuffing defender set and see why herding has its plus points.(i have every type of defender btw).

I like every powerset in team to assist everyother powerset in team in being very effective and important. A fun build to have is important, but if its far from what people may expect it helps to inform people.

His words, not mine.. i was just as shocked.

at least it wasnt like the 37 that didnt even had unyielding.. i had to tank with my peacebringer....

and when i say 'tank' naturally i mean i had to take the alpha and hit antagonize and dwarf flare as soon as they had recharged and punchvoke all the time to try to get as much aggro as possible.. as that is more or less my limits of 'tankin' with Dwarf without a taunt aura.

I give advice (this is unsolicited advice, mind) only when its painfully obvious that the individual is suffering from the team's expectations and their own subsequent feelings of inadeqaucy.

Why do I keep on getting knocked back?
Why do I keep on getting mezzed?

Theres nothing wrong in sharing some inforamtion - as long as its not;'choose this', or 'choose that'... But more of 'this power does this', or 'this power does that'. Some people won't know the benefits of some powers as well as others and thats fair enough.

What is wrong is to dictate power choices.

Give people the tools and inforamtion to make an informed decision.

I tend not to give advice, initially because there were no other Ice tanks around and now because they're all FOTM PvP builds and I don't really enjoy getting flamed for making suggestions, which is invariably what happens.

On this specific instance, I've had lots of experience with tanks - primary sub-25 - who refuse to run toggles because "They use too much end". At the early levels, this is true if you try and scrank because you simply don't have the endurance to fight *and* run your toggles. A lot of people don't like proper tanking - they make a tank because of the Hulk / Superman image of it without realising the job it does in the game.

Personally, I like proper tanking - as my regular Thursday night team will attest (and probably make snide remarks about my liking debt as well ). The first in, last out, going down with the ship kind of approach is something I enjoy. Outside of soloing, I very rarely scrank until I know that I can manage it without issue.

That said, if people ask my advice, I'm always happy to give it. I won't tell people they have to/would be stupid to take powers, but I will try and impress upon them the strength of feeling behind my opinion
