I know its the RP thing but i can imagine myself making a typo out in the field n getting slayed for it.

Everyone makes typos. In a situation like live, online roleplay, where there are certain performance criteria to be met, you tend to make more typos.

Thing is, in those same live, online RP situations, people only really pick up on typos that are funny. If Stasis actually did come to a GG event and start picking holes in everyone's mistakes, she'd get her throat ripped out in no short order. Yeah, we try to write nice English, but failing doesn't gain you automatic humiliation.

Also, if you come to GG (for example), you'll find that we have several people there who can't write that well. Generally it's some form of dyslexia, sometimes quite severe. We make allowances because these are generally interesting people to roleplay with, and usually make more of a fuss over their own mistakes than we do.

And then there's the non-native English speakers who sometimes make interesting errors.

Frankly, if we spent our time correcting grammar errors in the other players, we wouldn't ever get any roleplay done!

The one thing that drives us up the wall is leet and text speak (and smilies) used in RP. Just don't do it. (I'd almost let someone get away with saying 'LOL' these days, since it actually appears to be becoming a word. Maybe even 'ROFL', but that's about it, and don't push it, or we'll set Purple Stasis on you. )

Nah, he's always been this bad, he gets to read my typing way to often, which is possably the most typo and spelling mistake riddled garbadge anywere, apart from leet speakers, as they aren't even speaking English.

I'm sort of on the other side from this because in it's original form, text speak could be used as a emotive use of text as certain things cannot be easily expressed in simple text.

What's better?

"I'm sure you're a good hero "

or

"I'm sure you're a good hero.", he added with a sarcastic tone to his voice.

Too true; and I wouldn't dream of doing it .

I admire people who can RP so quickly, even if they do spell almost every word wrong...they at least manage to get their point/emotions/actions across; something which I have trouble doing in such a short amount of time.

My knowledge of the English language leans more towards the technical side. Ask me to "pretty" up a piece of text within thirty seconds, and you'll be greeted with a blank stare and a rather heavy whack to the back of the head.

Taking the rather short RPing session on Villains the other day for example: I couldn't think of the right word to fit one of my character's sentences, so I ended up saying, "spice up the flowers". Followed shortly by an aside "wth?" It made no sense, but at least it was grammatically correct and the spelling was top notch.

Doesn't really count, does it?

If you can spell "antidisestablishmentarianism" that's just wonderful; but if it doesn't fit into the sentence, you might as well just have said "I like orange socks".

shoe horn "antidisestablishmentarianism" in to a sentance and i petion a prize for you, i yet to find a conversation it would get in to with out looking like showing off, it's like fitting "artichoke" in, i love the word phonicly, but it's unlikely i will talk to another Hero about my favorite vegatables, or names there of.

Unless it's Jess. She could talk about the merits of potatoes all day long.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, well... There's an exception to EVERY rule ever made, and Jess is that exception!

You do realise Z, that if they should ever pick Jess to appear in a CoH comic, you're actually the ONLY one who could write her part? Anyone else who tried would probably go mad in seconds...

Actually, I'd be happy with:

"I'm sure you're a good hero. *winks*"

However, frankly, a winking smiley is not the same as saying something in a sarcastic manner, and if they meant it that way then they need to say it.

We put up with smilies from some people, but there are always better ways of expressing yourself because smilies don't mean the same thing to everyone. Your example, in particular, is a very bad one since I don't think a wink has anything to do with sarcasm.

So, SW, I'd say that using smilies is not a simple, short-hand way of expressing complex descriptions of emotions. Actually, it's a really poor way of doing so.

Sorry.

Jess is a really interesting character to talk to. When Z is in the right mood, you get some stunning (if slightly silly) RP out of a conversation with Jess about napkins or other household objects.

Jess is great.

Yes, Jess is great, and actually describing an action is far better than using a smiley.

Meh, YMMV. I tend to use them as I find the overuse of emotives far more annoying; and perhaps I've become addicted to them after 5+ years of text based gaming.

I won't use them for certain characters, but Weasel, as he is, will use them incessantly; because that's the way he is. Mr. Normal wouldn't use them at all.

I don't actually ever remember seeing Weasel use them. To be honest, much as I like you, and enjoy RPing with Weasel, if he did use constant smilies, I'd make my excuses and leave. I don't think you use them half as much as you think you do, or you're very well behaved around GG.

Agreed. I mean, how many people go around saying "colon bracket" to indicate that they're happy?

Semicolon P.

Actually, I've been known to say "semicolon dash capital p" once in a while, but that was an inside joke sort of thing.

Like I said, LOL and ROFL are starting to become actual words, but people don't actually talk in smilies.

Well, to belatedly comment on this post, neither is good, but the second is better.

How about any of these?

"I'm sure you're a good hero," he said sarcastically.
"I'm sure you're a good hero," he said with a thin smile.
"I'm sure you're a good hero," he said with a sneer.
"I'm sure you're a good hero," he said with a smirk.
"I'm sure you're a good hero," he said with a dismissive wave.
"I'm sure you're a good hero," he said with a snort.
"I'm sure you're a good hero," he said and rolled his eyes.

I'm sure you get the point -- smileys are too generic to accurately convey emotion. might mean everything from "Why, you naughty, naughty man, you" to "I'm going to violently disagree with your position, call you names and jump on your values and your integrity with golf shoes; but don't take it personally. See? A smiley. That means you can't call me names back."

Of course, there's other ways to get the point across:

"I'm sure you're a good hero." His voice reeked of sarcasm.
"I'm sure you're a 'good hero'."
"Heh, yeah you're a good hero. Sure. I would _never_ doubt _that_."

As I've tried to explain, smilies are often shortcuts for facial expressions that cannot be dealt with in game. I'm RP'ing, not writing the Complete Works of Shakespear.?

If Weasel can't spell a word, he's going to spell it wrong until taught. No matter what I, as a player, may think or know.

I'm very sorry, and more than a little hurt, that GG should adopt this attitude.

It's likely down to the immense number of tools we get from time to time that speak nothing but leet gibberish and throw smilies all over the place... Generally annoying the hell out of us all.

TBH, I dislike smilies when RPing as well, and just ignore that they were there. If someone wants my characters to see them winking, they can either emote a wink properly, or not get it seen. If people think that's elitist, that's up to them, but it's not!

I'm very sorry you feel that way, Weasel. I just don't see the difficulty or problem in typing /em winks instead of

On a more practical note, it can often, for me at least, be very confusing the see leet and smileys in use while people are roleplaying. Especially if I don't know the player or the character, if I see someone type "lol" or ";p" in local, I often think they're speaking OOC, and in several cases, I've seen someone seem to switch between IC and OOC without any form of notice, or even treat them as though there were no difference between them.

So because some idiots have abused the system, you want to stop that branch completely by disallowing all use of it (no matter how IC it is); in effect, nerfing it?

Remind you of anything? It does me
