Thinking of Roleplaying more in Co*

I roleplay a infamous vile old man at GG RP sessions, and many of the GG regulars create alts every nanosecond (not naming, names <coughs> Zortel <cough>.

[/ QUOTE ]

You have been gone for a while. Zortel moved into the pictosecond range ages ago.

I must do as well, as I found your single word "Newb." post unneeded and unwanted.

Rock_Eagle: If you do find characters that think they're better than everyone not to your liking, perhaps GG isn't for you. There's a few characters there with those views, one of my ones before reforming attested that he was superior to mere humans. Though an idea would be to observe for a bit, and then see which characters to approach and which to not.

Personally, I think you should look more into RP. It's not easy. You think of COH RP as campy Batman series god moding like I expect many people do.

Which it is not.

[/ QUOTE ]

The Galaxy Girl roleplay is not that campy, but roleplay in general can be. The GG crowd tends towards one particular style of roleplay, and it's not going to be everybody's cup of tea.

Im not telling people to not to go to GG I just had a bad experince there and TBH it has put me off ever going there agian. And as for the Heros names I cant really rember there names as they are no more now one was a blaster and the other was a deffender I think.

It was petty of me.

EDIT: So you just stopped going because of two people? You can judge an entire friendly community on two people who don't even go there anymore?

I suggest you just come for a few nights and observe. The newer heroes mix much better with the newer crowd.

I currently have a dilema in Co* as I would like to start to roleplay more however I am not sure about the best way to go about it

[/ QUOTE ]

Identify the different communities existing. Browsing the server boards to get an idea what is happening, what supergroups are in roleplaying, is generally a good start.
You can generally quickly get a rough idea who is rather leaning on casual RP, on hardcore RP etc...

[ QUOTE ]
and whether the styles of roleplay here are ones I can cope with and if so which one would suit me best

[/ QUOTE ]

That's the hardest part and one which is strictly personnal.
When you have an idea about who is doing what on the server, see what is interesting you and, if needed, if you have to change your own way to RP to get along that community. Because it's far, far unlikely the community will change to suit your tastes.

Be patient. You might consider having find your "home" at first because you have a good contact with a couple of players. And finally their characters were tertiary alts you will rarely see later, or that all others people are indeed idiots you can't cope with etc etc...
If the community has a formal acceptance (like entering a SG), better to be sincere and say "I'm probing", to avoid unnecessary drama later.

I can understand a couple of bad experiences putting you off Rock_Eagle... TBH, I find myself a little irritated that someone did this to you.

Not for the being the rude part, I'm sure you dealt with that easily enough! No, for the fact that one or two persons actions put someone off of going back to GG. Not going there cause it's not your cup of tea I can understand. Not going there cause someone was an [censored] to you though...

We're a friendly lot honest, most of us don't bite... Little circles of characters can and do form, which might seem difficult to penetrate at first, but honestly, they're not!

TBH im not sure GG is for me at the moment. I really like the new Pocket D and would probarly find it easier to RP in there once a week with a toon and when I feel more at ease RPing or get to know people that go to GG meetings then turn up and RP there. I meet some of you at the comic con any way and I know your not a bunch of idots.

As I said it would be cool if there was like a weekly Club night I would organise one but not to sure what sort of things need to be done for it. I might even see if we could get Evo involed.

The opinion expressed there is even more misguided than my initial take on GG.

Generally put: Roleplaying can be involving and complex story lines offering rich opportunity for intercharacter development, tension, excitement and mutual entertainment with a bewildering undercurrent of bizarre subplots, personal development, angst, subturfuge and anything else you can throw in the mix or it can be campy over-the-top singularly focused "Save the World while looking good" powertrips. And anything in between.

The preferences of me and my group are not catered to at GG in general, although some of the individuals who might also enjoy GG have been nice to RP with on an on/off basis.

I have found that it sometimes is fun to simply take a few of the more boring "Arrest X members of Y faction in any location" missions and doing them in a zone where only a few of the mobs are really threatening. And doing it in a flamboyant style in-character with lots of monologuing, silly banter, and general good humour. More often than not I have met a roleplayer (or more than one) this way and elaborated from there.

If you do this though, don't go totally overboard in background story unless you keep it intentionally broad and openminded. That's at least what works best in my experience.

Quite true... Even Miss Ellie, who once thoroughly despised the man, has come to realise he's trying to change, and has made peace with him...

Okay, I shall have to try and be the voice of reason here... (Yeah, right.)

GG isn't for everyone, this is something that has been established a long time ago, and even caused a slight war at some point, when some of the more enthousiastic GG-ers took it as a personal attack, rather then someone's opinion.

Everyone has their own style, and in all honesty, when many of us are wrapped in various plots, it can get difficult to keep up socialising with people, new or old. I understand that this can be taken as elite, but I can safely say, that as far as I am aware, that is never the intention of any of the GG crowd.

So, to prevent another war of this kind now; Rock Eagle, I am sincerely sorry for your bad experience, and if ever you feel like trying something else then Pocket D, by all means come on to the GGOOC chanel and we'll make sure you feel welcome.

Red; Don't take this personal, but please tone it down a little. As a member of GG you also have the responsibility of keeping it nice and tidy and not engage in flame wars, which this is turning into. You respect that not everyone likes GG. There is no such thing as a better roleplaying style/group in Co*, as it is all in the eye of the beholder/player.

Thank you for listening.

Dont worry it was long sorted out before it turned in to flame war. But I am going ahead with the Idea of trying to get a weekly club night going on in union for RPers and non Rpers as well. What I want to know is what sort of thing would the RPers be looking for. I for one have never tired doing any thing like this and any help you people could give to me would be grand also what would be the best night to hold this on I personaly think thursday but as I siad any advice.

There are plans bubbling around to make a "club night" at PD

It's just not that fleshed out yet: is it every week, or every two weeks?
It'll probably be friday, but then again, it might not be...

As to what RPers are looking for...

My character would go for friends and fun. That's it...

And as a whole, I think it's fairly safe to say that we look to having a night without someone showing up and display an excesive amount of graphical emotes (ussually involving the dreaded BB and a lot of slapping) and we do get lucky like that every now and then, but it seems it's too much to ask some nights... *sigh*

Red, you'd be surprised at how a minority of people can effect someone's overall view of a community.

Take me for example; until recently, my view of the GG community was relatively sour, simply because I'd had a bit of a childish falling out with a couple of members. When you're focused on who or what you don't like, you tend to "blot out" the positive images (A bit like people having issues with the game itself, come to think of it).

However, when I finally got a set of cajones and apologised to those folks, the negativity kind of went "poof!" and I'm all cheery towards GG again.

It does have it's issues of course - you'd be hard pressed to find any community that doesn't, however - but for the largest part, it's a welcoming and vibrant group.

Posted

By all means do so. :-) If you need advice, feel free to PM me and I shall aid where I can.

Jitze, I think this is a different sort of meet we're talking about, I don't think it is related to what some of the GG folks were planning. :-)

Syra, that took guts, and in turn, if I hadn't made it clear before, some of us do tend to get a bit iffy sometimes because we have too much on our minds, and some of us are a bit short-tempered at times, when really, we should be a lot more patient.
So, when will we be seeing you then?

Posted

Not sure. Maybe tonight. Maybe tommorow.

I demand level 30 on my Stalker first, then we shall see. Muahahaha. Bwahahaha. etc, etc.

Posted

Good luck! It has taken me nearly a year to get one character to level 44... Roleplay is the death of leveling! :s

Posted

What is the RP situation with COV anyway?

I want to use it for something while I wait for those Mayhem missions.

Posted

As I said near the start of the thread, it's currently weaker than CoH; mainly due to the lack of a "centralised" area where you know Roleplay is going to be taking place. The new PDP has helped significantly in this regard, but outside of that area it's mainly inner-Supergroup stuff.

The SG I'm part of - EVIL ("European....", not the other one) - is pretty intense when it comes to the level of Roleplay going on, for example, but I don't hear an awful lot going on outside of SGs.

It's dissapointing, but perhaps understandable given how established people already were with CoH. If CoV came first, I'd imagine the situation would be reversed accordingly.

Posted

Probably true, yes, also, a lot of us still haven't managed to get a toon to level 50 on CoH. Though most of us have CoV, I don't think we'll be playing much until we can actually commit to playing it.

An SG was created for the GG crowd that wanted to be in the same SG as eachother, and is called the Concorde, but not lot has been done with it.
