--------------------------------------------------------
She reached over and turned of the alarm clock. It hadn’t woken her. She hadn’t slept properly for over a week now, haunted by unknown images of fear and pain, images that weren’t hers. Why? She didn’t know. She sat up in bed and stared out the window, the sun was bright today, she squinted as her eyes adjusted to the light reflecting over the lake outside. It would have been a beautiful sight if her mind wasn’t clouded in darkness. She reached over and picked up a piece of paper beside the bed. ‘To my gorgeous tufty. Have a wonderful day, I will love you forever xx’. Every day she would read the note, every day trying to remember who it was from, trying to find answers. January 13th 2001, she couldn’t remember anything before that day. Instead her memories were filled with shadows and replaced by the visions that kept her awake at night. She got up and walked over to the wardrobe. “Time for work” she thought as she took the costume from the hanger. If you could call it work that is. Each day arresting some troll high on dine or stopping some outcast mugging an old lady. This was her life now, she didn’t know any different. Enrolled as a hero when these strange new powers came to fruition, after all it was heroes that saved her that day and she felt this was the best way to pay them back.

‘Hi doctor’
Tufty entered the doctors’ room. She had been meeting with Dr. Gillian McCoy for almost 4 years now. They were trying to find answers and piece together the troubled heroes past, as yet nothing had worked.
‘So how are you feeling today?’ the doctor asked.
‘Fine, well you know.. Same as usual.’
‘You’re not sleeping again are you? Anything wrong?’ Dr McCoy asked as she shone a light into the hero’s eyes. She had been working with her long enough now to know when something was wrong, that was the easy part. The hard part was getting the answers.
‘No, nothing in particular.’ The reply was what the doctor was expecting.
‘Well try these, they might help.’ The doctor handed a bottle of pills to Tufty. ‘Anyway, I’ve been asked to pass on some information to you about a mission. Someone seems to think it may help with what we are looking for.’
‘Why? How could this possible help me?’ The hero seemed puzzled.
‘Its in Striga.’
Striga Island. She hadn’t been back there since that day. The day when her life seemingly fell apart.
‘They understand if you don’t want to go, but someone was quite keen on you attending this particular mission.’
‘No, its fine. I had better not disappoint. I’ll get a team together and go investigate.’ With that the hero walked out of the room.

Tufty opened up her communication channels as she leapt through the city.
‘Hi everyone, Tufty SNHS reporting in. Any senior Precision Rangers on?’
‘Ranger Doulos here Tufty. What can I do you for?’
‘Hey D. Any chance I can have a team of Rangers?’
‘I’ll see what I can do Tufty. Where abouts are you heading?’
‘Over to Striga. Just got to investigate something.’
‘No worries. I think Frozen Rogue is near there. I’ll ask him to get a team together and meet you by the ferry.’
‘Thanks D’
‘Any time. Ranger out.’

She approached the meeting point. The team of Rangers were already there. Frozen Rogue, Accel, Crossfire and Chillblaze all stood in font of her. The red and white uniforms were unmistakable. Precision Rangers. Some of the finest heroes Paragon City had seen, if it wasn’t for them she wouldn’t be were she was today. If it wasn’t for some of them she wouldn’t even be here at all.

‘Hey Tufty!’ Frozen Rogue exclaimed as she approached the group.
‘Hi guys. Good to see you all again.’
‘Same to you Tufts. So what’s happening?’ Crossfire asked.
‘Oh you know.. Just the usual. I’ll fill you in on the way.’ Tufty replied as the rest of the heroes followed her onto the boat.

The team of heroes sat at the table as Tufty briefed them on their mission.
‘So that’s about it. Strange goings on, people being attacked by unknown things, people going missing. As yet they haven’t got any other information. Only this location we are heading to.’ She pointed to the map as the ferry swayed in the rough seas.
‘Looks as though there’s a storm coming.’ Accel pointed out of the window to the sky. Dark clouds had gathered in front of them.
Tufty sat with her hands on her knees. They were nearly on Striga now. She felt herself getting anxious as the destination got closer and closer. Her first time back on the island since that day. As they approached the dock she felt strange, as if something was calling out to her.

The ship arrived and the heroes walked out onto the island. The rain began to fall.
‘Ok, lets make this quick.’ Frozen Rogue, the young Rangers squad leader said ‘Here are the destination Co-ordinates.’
The heroes activated their travel powers and went into the darkness.

‘Over here.’ Chillblaze whispered as the rest of the team approached. He was standing by the edge of the woods, sheltering from the rain. ‘ We need to get over there.’ He pointed to a clearing over the other side. They could just make out a doorway, it was well hidden between the rocks and overgrown foliage. A pack of War Wolves stood near their destination, howling at the night sky. The heroes could see their breath in the cold damp air.
‘Great. So who wants to play fetch?’ Accel joked as he picked up a stick from the ground.
‘Love too.. but these are not what we are here for.’ Tufty said ‘I don’t want to be here any longer than necessary. Frozen, Chill if you care to do the honours.’

The two Rangers stepped forward and began to concentrate. Ice began to appear around the Wolves feet. Slowly creeping up their legs until there whole bodies were covered.
‘That should hol…’ A rock smashed into Chillblaze's skull sending the hero tumbling to the ground.
‘Over there!’ Tufty screamed.
They had been spotted. The wolf began to charge at them. Snarling and growling as it approached, its eyes glowing in the moonlight.

The war wolf charged at the heroes. Saliva dripping from its fangs. Tufty ran over to Chillblaze.
‘Chill! Are you Ok?’
The fallen hero groaned and rubbed his head as he sat up.
‘Ouch. That kind of hurt.’
‘Crossfire! Take him down!’ Tufty shouted as she pointed towards the on coming beast.
Crossfire aimed a fireball at the monster, the blaze struck illuminating the night sky. It let out a blood curdling roar as its hair burned. It kept coming. Crossfire braced himself as it leapt towards him. He grabbed it by the wrists, trying to prevent its razor sharp claws from slicing him open. His touch burned to creature’s arms. Accel ran over an unleashed a torrent of energy that swept across the ground. It struck the target, knocking it off balance and out of Crossfire grasp.
‘Quick Cross! Blast it now!’ Accel shouted towards his fellow hero, preparing another attack. Both the heroes threw their arms forward in unison, unleashing their blasts simultaneously. Fire and energy rushed through the air towards the dazed target. The impact threw the heroes down as dust and smoked rose up, clouding their vision. As it began to settle they could see the fallen war wolf’s lifeless body on the ground.
‘Ok everyone gather round.’ Tufty said to the exhausted heroes as they all walked towards one of the frozen wolves. She extended her arms and grasped the air in front. The team felt life surging back through their bodies. They continued towards their destination.

The team entered the base. The were stood in a large cavern, the stone walls were being supported by metal girders and floors. The could hear water trickling down to the floor.
‘Look over there.’ Frozen Rogue pointed to where he wanted the heroes to go.
The heroes headed towards a passage way carved out of the rocks. They had yet to hear anything other than their own voices and footsteps.
‘Arrr!’ Tufty screamed in pain as she collapsed holding her head in her hands.
‘Tufty! What’s wrong?’ Frozen Rogue grabbed the hero. She was writhing with pain, she felt as if someone was gauging out her mind.

Great writing Tufty, I love the way you describe the fight!

Looking forward to part two! As everyone has said, the setting and battle were great, reminds me of trying to pick off "yellow" stragglers from the masses in Striga, sends a shiver through even now.
