Did the devs really think people wouldn't abuse AE

I think AE is a great idea. A lot of people in my SG have made really awesome mission archs that we all get together and play.

But really! When they said they where going to bring this issue out, people were talking about making the ultimate farm, the devs said they wouldn't let that happen.

Did the devs really believe people weren't that greedy?

They knew people would be people, but they gave warnings anyway.

They were also prepared to take action if needed. And they told us that before it ever went to beta.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I think the devs expected farming and such, but I don't think they expected it to be as pervasive as it is. I think they probably expected the amount of people farming would be about the same, or maybe increase a little. Heck, I too expected farming, but didn't imagine it would overshadow all of the other content.

There is no system that can't be broken by a resourceful individual armed with the right knowledge and motivation. Once that knowledge is out, it becomes a matter of multiplication. Word of mouth and gossip can spread as fast as a virus, especially when it comes to the internet. If that hole is plugged, it's only a matter of time before another is found. There is no foolproof system (especially when it comes to computer and internet) and to be honest, PS seemed to believe that they could control it. Well, if the CIA, FBI, and NSA can't stop random individuals from taking advantage of various glitches in their systems, I sincerely doubt a small game development company can fare any better.

and then they waited until it got really bad before making any sort of step, and therefore pissed a lot of people off and gave the antifarm crowd all the ammo they ever needed for spitting vitriol and doom.

Actually, the devs' main problem with MA abuse are exploits being put into those farms, not so much the farms themselves. So they probably expected farmers to continue to farm, which isn't really bad, but not that so many players would discover and abuse exploits in the system. Granted, they probably expected exploits would get abused, just not this much.
