I Wish I Were A Hacker.

Ya know, this really sucks. I moved to Georgia with the wife and am living on campus since her job requires it. But the campus network has such a paranoid IT department running it that they only allow outgoing information through most ports and no incoming. This f***s me over because I now cannot connect to CoV. I have to log in through Cisco Clean Access Agent to get online at all and when I do, I'm at their will. I haven't played I15, the new super booster, am likely going to miss the Rikti Invasions and Double XP weekend, and now have to know I'll probably miss the launch of I16.

It would be different if I left the game because I was upset or unpleased but the devs have been doing a better job than ever. I have not been a huge fan of theirs in the past but when they started giving us things we've been asking for in droves I can't help but respect them and their hard work for the community. All to have my access to the game blocked as all this is happening.

Man, I wish I were a hacker.

I guess getting a separate high-speed line isn't an option?

[Gla-DOS] You will be... missed.

I wish, it were. Man if I have to play freakin Champions for my superhero fix, I'm going to be bitterly satisfied. Ugh

Top of the head ideas:

See if you can have cable installed, and get access that way.

Ask if you can have an external phone line installed and see if you can get DSL that way.

Talk to cell phone companies. See if one them has any kind of a cellphone modem that's worth the cost (and fast enough).

Talk to a head of the IT department, explain that you're NOT a student, ask if there's any way to get special permissions for your installation. If they say no, try higher.

If they can't understand the desire to play an online game, tell them you need two-way highspeed for sites you access. Stress that it's not porn or anything like that. Once you get someone sympathetic, THEN give them the details.

Good luck!

Thanks Tripp, I could use all the help and luck I can get at this point.

Better come up with something Midas. FUSION's got a bit of a leadership issue at the moment...

My Stories

Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.

These policies, were they explained in writing?

I would speak with the IT people, and explain that you are spouse to staff, and staff should have a better leway than students.

(I know, I give my staff no leeway, but that is only within the schools. I do not care what they do at home with their equipment.)

Sometimes, I impress my boss. Sometimes, I impress myself. The rest of the time, I scare people. I can live with that.

My college did the same thing. I approached the IT department explained to them what i was doing and they helped me work around it.

if need be i would get a seperate internet connection or steal someones wireless..

Does the firewall allow http web access? You could try something like this using a port 80 socks proxy.

We don' need no stinkin' signatures!

BBM, I'm with Dr. Overdose on this.

Call up the campus tech support staff and explain what you're trying to do. Also, it's probably a good idea to have the Trouble Connecting? Guide open so you can give them things like port numbers.

And as someone who has been active in the whole hacker scene, worked network security jobs, and basically got a laundry list of "been there, done that, sent postcards!", no. Breaking into and subverting a university's IT infrastructure isn't a laughing matter. Sure, you'll get on and play the game for a while. But, then the police come and take you away and you don't play anymore.
