Why restrict yourself? Make both! I would.
Wouldn't an "earth spirit" be concidered magic?? Unless...you captured an earth spirit and scientically extracted/engineered the magical energies.
Just sayin'

Edit: More specifically, I'd make a Stone/SS. Looks and feels wonderful!

(this too, would make sense thematically, since he has a brute version of himself that is Nrg/Elec, so he's already figured a way to make his Energy Blast gauntlets into Energy Melee attacks. And he is becoming versed in melee combat.)

Stone Armor takes a lot of patience to play; more than I have at least.
I would pick the Earth/Thermal controller. I have one of these, and it's freaking awesome. I dislike the penalties of stone/granite, and I'm not a fan of EM, so it's not a hard decision in my opinion.
That said, Earth/Thermal is a beast on teams. Shields, heals, buffs, debuffs, a rez, and a pile of AoE control make for a fun, gfx card melting time. Damage sucks before you get your pet though, and sucks hard. But stoney is awesome smashy goodness personified. He's such a little trooper, all buffed up, charging the ranks of enemies by himself.

Make both, and use the same name for each. All you have to do is make them on different servers. 
These "should I make X or Y" topics always confuse me. If I have a concept for X and a concept for Y, they both get made. I never have to choose because I don't need to choose, especially not when there are 11 servers (12 if you count Test, and I do, I have eight characters who were born and live on Test), with a potential 36 slots on each.
I'm an altaholic, and proud of it. I simply don't understand mainalomaniacs. To each their own.

Ugh, I figured I'd come to you folks to help me make a decision.
I'm having trouble in deciding between two characters to roll.
My main, Vojin ( as depicted in the picture ) is preparing for the Super Science Booster Pack by developing a formula that will grant him the protection of an Earth/Gaia spirit. He will inject himself with the temporary serum and be granted the abilities.
But I can decide!
Do I make an Earth/Thermal/Stone controller and make him an AoE control/team buffing/melee smashing beast (the buffing would make sense, thematically, since he is a Sonic/Nrg Blast/Psi {or Power, depending on build] Defender), and since the Earth Control set offers Volcanic Gasses, I thought Thermal would be a good thematic pairing.
But then again, since Earth is usually depicted as being unmovable and strong, would a Stone Armor/Nrg Melee/Stone Tanker be better.
