Question about the key binding features

Hello all,

Ever since I started playing CoH/V a few months ago, i've been bothered by the same problem, up till now i've been ok just letting it slide, but more and more it urks me having to reconfiqure everything each time I create a new charecter. Under the options there is a key binding menu. When I finished custimizing the keys I want to use I use the save to file option, which if I'm correct in assuming means that anytime I want to go and use that key binding setup It will automatically load that way for a new toon. However, the odd bit is that while it does that, it loads a very old file everytime. For instance, one of my keys on the old file is mapped to the tithe (`) button. The new keymappings have that one to the left control button. Several other keys are the same. The end result is even after I've hit the "Load from file" button (which changes nothing) I have to re-enter my key bindings every time. I've traced the problem down to an issue I believe with the Valve/Steam application. (As most know, Steam is a outside program that will allow you to load games from another location..or so it's supposed to.) I originally downloaded the client of CoH/V as the free demo and then bought the game via Steam. However I still load the program through the icon on my desktop, not through Steam (For some reason steam will not load CoH/V proporly.) The point of all of this is that the keybinding file that is loading is in the Steam program folder NOT the Game folder (I am unable to locate the keybinding file in the game folder.) Can anyone offer any suggestions please? Would really like to get this to work the way it's meant to. Getting really tired of having to always go into the options and rearranging everything. thanks in advance!

A workaround (I think - don't use this feature much) is:

1) After making binds to your satisfaction, save to your own file: /bind_save_file <filename>

2) To invoke those binds: /bind_load_file <filename>

That should save you re-entering the binds for the character, and then, if I read you correctly, you can save the result to the file that keeps reverting (until refreshed for the new character).

As I say, not sure it will fly, but for what it's worth.

My scrapper doesn't need an AoE. She IS an AoE.

What you're doing should work... and BBhumeBB's suggestion should work as well (I use his method, since the button didn't exist until much more recently).

I'm not sure why what you're doing doesn't work... or how Steam would really mess it up, that's a really odd problem. But I'd suggest trying the /bindsavefile method, first using something like "/bindsavefile binds.txt" (fyi, the "_" in slashcommands are optional, I prefer without )... if that doesn't work for some odd reason, you can try to force it with "/bindsavefile C:\binds.txt", or to another location you can write to instead.

Good luck! If it doesn't work, I'd suggest asking about your problem in the Tech Issues section, they're generally more familiar with why stuff breaks.

<QR>

Using /bindsave makes the default file, not /bindsavefile

Using the other extension simply lets you make more than one custom file, but it's the default keybind.txt that's created from /bindsave that gets loaded on new characters.

Make sure the keybinds.txt file is in the CoH folder for the copy that you are using.

Thanks for the help you all.

Just to make sure I'm understanding you correctly here are the steps I'm seeing I need to take.

(1) Customize my keybinds as normal in the options menu
(2) type /bindsavefile "file path to CoH root folder"
(3) from then on in type /bindload "filename" to load those keybinds.

Does that look correct?

thanks again for the help

Fixed.

Edit:
#2 could also be done this way:

/bindsavefile "file path to CoH root folder+filename"

For instance if city of heroes is in the default location:

/bindsavefile "C:\program files\City of Heroes\keybinds.txt"

This will overwrite the default keybinds the game uses.
