who does more damage
Crabs are going to outdo either of them in AoE, but between the two... I'm guessing that banes have better burst, and huntsmen do more over time.

can you cap def on a crab??? has anyone seen a crap tank ?? if its possible i would love to try it. that more my play style any way. i dont care how the crab legs looks as long as the build is solid.
lvl 50 AR/EM, lvl 50 SS/Shld brute, lvl 50 Shld/SS, lvl 50 Stone/SS
lvl 50 Dark/Fire, lvl 50 WP/EM, lvl 50 WP/Fire, lvl 50 Fire/Kin
lvl 50 Emp/Dark, lvl 50 Thug/Pain, lvl 50 Fire/Shld, lvl 48 Ill/Rad
lvl 45 BS/Regen lvl 42 Ice/EM
Carb Spiders carry the nickname "Blastankerminds" because of their AoE damage, high Resistance and Defense values and their ability to have up to six pets out at once (Summon Spiderlings, Call Reinforcements and the pet from the Mace Mastery Patron Pool).
As long as you can stomach the legs you'll probably enjoy the branch. Check the guides section for further help.

I play a crab tank as my main. If you need advice on a build I'd be happy to help.
Keep in mind that in order to softcap your Defense it will cost alot of infamy. By alot I mean 50+ million MINIMUM. If you're fine with that, PM me.

you can get to the def soft caps on your crab, it's not too hard, but it is expensive. I went with fighting and leadership pools for weave and manuevers.
With capped defenses, 5 pets and good aoe dmg you're a death machine.
InidiousX - lvl 50 Ill/Rad Controller
Black-Talon - lvl 50 DM/SR Scrapper
Night-Blade - lvl 50 Katana/Dark Screapper
Bone-Shredder - lvl 50 SOA
Red-Phantom - lvl 50 Elec/SR Brute

Crabs have the greatest AoE potential, but at the expense of both defense and ST potential. Easily remedied by duo-ing with another crab. Crabs that softcap themselves tend to give up too much in some other area, loosing most of their advantage over the the huntsman. On the upside, that type of build is likely less expensive in infamy.
Huntsman (hybrid Bane/Wolf) have the next highest AoE Potential, and can just barely softcap, or just barely not softcap, or add in even more AoE at the expense of defense. However, crabs have the stronger AoE skew.
Personally, I prefer the huntsman with near-softcapped defenses, Aid Self, while maintaining pylon soloing ST damage, the second best AoE damage, and stronger force multiplication thru both buffs and debuffs. I give up a little defense, but I keep the second best of of all worlds.
If the crab legs were less fugly, and I knew I would always have a crab partner, then given a duo of crabs mitigates the defensive weakness as well as the ST weakness I would then always duo with crabs for the greater AoE destruction.
Bane (Bane Melee with minimal Wolf Attacks) are next, but both forts and widows can be built to equal the same level of AoE. Forts and NWs are not normally built that way, but can be.
Thanks for all the input. I figure sense i all ready have a lvl 50 ss/shls brute who is cap'ed on def in all 3 categories and has 4 aoe attacks, i dont need another aoe melee toon. i have seen builds of huntsman with cap'ed rang and aoe def so i might go that route.

Eh, what? Crabs have better defences than Banes and Huntsmen... they stay at range to make use of their CT, plus have Dull Pain and a toggle armour.
Doom.
Yep.
This is really doom.

Prob can soft cap crab defense, at least for ranged. As for tanking, forget about it. They do some nice damage, and get a mix of defense and resistance with decent mez protection though.

A good portion of the yummy crab attacks I love are melee though. That, and I just love tearing things apart with the crab legs. Wish it could be removed when your using the 2nd build though.

Forget about it? One of my friends has a soft-capped Crab with Tough for over 50% S/L resist and a good 40% for the others. Also has perma Serum for +80% HP. That's a crazy-durable character and has tanked numerous AVs for us across several SFs.
And if by "decent mez protection" you mean "mag 14.4 which only Tanks get; more than Stalkers, Scrappers, Brutes, Widows, and Banes," then yes.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

Without dipping into Presence pool powers (which I have trouble convincing myself to do) crabs don't really have any good ways to hold aggro IMO. They do pretty good damage. Not great damage, but pretty good. The pets are sweet, but sometimes squishy and are on long timers. All told, I'd treat a crab more as a shock trooper like their suppose to be, and not as a tank. Charge in with channel gun blazing, then rip them a few new holes. Dead mobs don't need to be tanked.
And if you REALLY need something tanked, tank it with omega maneuver.

Mind sharing your Huntsman build? I'm going Huntsman at 50 and using Crab to level for now. But what you have sounds like what I want.
Crab spiders can definitely soft cap, have 50% s/l resist and 40% to everything else along with perma-serum. People will always tell you that the soft capped crab will be making sacrifices, but from experience I can tell you that the sacrifices definitely aren't AoEs, pets, or leadership buffs.
The real sacrifice? Infamy.

I've seen crap tanks. Tankers with bare minimum of attacks (which are never used). Tanks with toggle defenses only which are never turned on. Tanks that take all their primary and secondary, and slot up the stupidest of things exclusivly... Such as 6 slotting the mez protection and 5% resistances, and ignoring attacks and useful things to slot (like resistance toggles).
