i started playing during beta, played for about a year, stopped playing and picked up about ayear ago on and off. i have 2 respecs and like 50 costume changes .

whats the point of respeccing? i'm a tech blaster with guns and technology spec. theres pointless abilities...or atleast there was when i was playing hardcore. and there are the abilities that are staples. other than my travel power, i dont see a point in respeccing at all, since nothing has changed to mi knowledge

If you don't see a reason to do it, you don't have to do it. I haven't done one in a long time.

But if you find you wish you had taken a different power or taken them in a different order or slotted them differently then you might want to do it.

respeccing has a number of uses. I tend to make decisions first and then read about the shortcomings later (I'm looking at you, Teleport Self). It is nice to know that it is possible to fix this later on.

This also means you can take more powers early, then as your needs change, you can go back and take instead more team centric powers, or stamina or whatever. thats a big use of them, to not take stam till after 20 due to feeling that you are wasting spots on the initial power in the pool.

You are also able to change the order you picked powers, and the slotting of them during respec. If you find a certain power gets more use, it may be nice to go back and six slot it. My first character put a lot of slots into a certain power to make it useful at a low level, then respecced out of those slots when IOs were useable in it for better effect (I'm looking at you, Teleport Self!).

overall, if you don't need it, don't use it. I like it, but YMMV.

It's also useful if you have IOs on one character that you either want to sell for cash flow, or move to another character. Respecing is the ONLY way to get those IOs back once you have slotted them.

I burn through respecs like mad on all my characters. It's not indecision or even poor choices. It's more to do with the fact that no amount of numbers in the world will tell you how a particular power feels in combat.

My Sonic/Devices blaster went from squishy as hell and a few more deaths from deletion, to almost unkillable and one of my favorite characters to play. This was over a series of multiple respecs as I narrowed down what worked for me and what didn't.

Just because a group of people swear that a certain power is the best thing in the world doesn't mean it works in your playstyle.

[/ QUOTE ]Things do change. Just 2 days ago, the entire Dominator AT get a major revamp, with 2 of the power sets playing completely differently now (/Psi isn't limited to 1 attack, and /nrg isn't limited to being a joke). Blasters have seem similar changes (including Assault Rifle), as have a few other ATs (not counting the major game-changing changes like ED and GDN). Plus, with IOs, powers that used to be seen as useless have started to become very useful, for a variety of reasons.

Also, OP, things have changed greatly in the past for years. You have missed the following major changes that affected most everyone:

Global Defense Nerf
Target Caps
Enhancement Diversification (ED) (this limits the usefulness of slotting past around 100% for any given aspect of a power, such as damage)
Invention Enhancements
HO nerfs
Inherents being added

Those aren't even counting any possible changes that may have occurred to the individual power sets.

There is also the consideration that some powers are very handy in the early levels, but not so much in the higher levels. I used Chillblain as a damage power in the early going for my Ice/Rad Controller, but I needed to fit something in that works better for me now, so the freespec was very handy.

If you have power slotted with more than three of the same type of enhancement, the additional ones are being wasted.

Pretty much every power in the game has been affected by changes since launch, one way or the other.

I assume you're Assault Rifle/Devices (your Origin is completely cosmetic), right? Those powersets have received serious changes since I registered, and in the Issue before last several Assault Rifle powers were severely altered. You probably need a respec much more than you think.
