Gonna roll an Ice/SS - any watchouts or advice? It will be my first Ice and SS toon so any advice from folks on this would be great. Ie, anything to avoid or focus on as I go up to 50?

Make sure you get into Tough/Weave in your 30s at some point (if not sooner).

Stamina at 20.

I'm a big fan of Hasten on all my Tankers.

Take Hurdle and Combat Jumping.

Avoid talking to strangers.

Don't bother with Icicles until way late (if at all) in your build (I personally can't stand it).

Avoid the clap.

I'm not a huge fan of Chilling Embrace early. Other people are. I would suggest grabbing it later if at all (this is a big debate I have with other Icers, so you may want to try it out on Test or with the second build and see how you like it).

Get Energy Absorbtion as soon as you can (L26 I think?). This is probably what makes the Ice primary for me.

I suggest a slotted Taunt and Hibernate (its a great combo) ... some folks don't like it however.

Watch out for wooden nickels.

My ice/SS doesn't have Tough or Weave and never needed them. I have both on my shield tank, but ice has Hoarfrost and Hibernate so it's easier to deal with emergencies and take 3 other powers. Another factor is that I was focusing on damage, rather than defense.

Combat Jumping is good on any defense set. I have it on my ice and shield tanks and my /SR scrapper.

Icicles..... I built mine for soloing a lot so I definitely wanted Icicles. It's not vital to the set.

I skipped Hand Clap.

I don't have Taunt. Please note: I took both Chilling Embrace and Icicles and have some taunt slotted in Energy Absorption.

Hibernate is one of those powers that doesn't need anything else. Drop a recharge in the default slot, unless you're going for set bonuses.

I didn't take Hurl. Lots of people do. I figured I could wait for ranged attacks and took Block of Ice, Ice Blast and Ice Storm from Arctic Mastery.

If you can afford it, or get lucky, slot the Steadfast Protection +defense unique. 3% defense on everything from one slot. Priceless.

I would say the most skippable power in your primary is Permafrost. I really only took it because I wanted to put IO sets in it and that's your place for resistance sets (assuming you don't have Tough and Hoarfrost is 'busy').

Next most skippable... either Icicles (it's a lot of damage, but you might not be concerned with that, though you probably are if you're taking SS) or Hibernate. I hardly ever use Hibernate but I had to take it because it's just so darn good for when everything is falling apart. It's a really good power.

If you are interested in damage, Rage / Icicles / Foot Stomp / an AoE (I took Ice Storm) is really brutal.

Least skippable powers in the primary: everything else, I guess. Aside from the three that are varying degrees of skippable (but I took them all), the other powers are essential.

SS: you're forced to take Jab. You must take Knockout Blow, Rage and Foot Stomp. I also took Punch and Haymaker. Hand Clap is counter-productive, in my opinion. Taunt is up to the individual and your goals with the tank. Hurl - totally subjective. Someone people want that ranged attack ASAP, some don't care.

Oh, and Kruunch mentioned Stamina at 20. That's a no-brainer for any non-Willpower tank unless you have a REALLY good reason. My invuln took Stamina at 30 so I could get Aid Self and Tough first and I let other people do the damage. He's built for large teams. Some ice tanks respec out of Stamina after getting Energy Absorption. This is viable, but Stamina is only one power pick since a tank REALLY wants Health, so I don't think you're saving much.

Yeah, without knowing what kind of playstyle the OP is going to be using, its hard to get into the finer points of a build.

My suggestions were aimed at the idea that this person will be doing AE missions since they are so popular right now (grouped). Having said that, an Ice Tanker without Tough/Weave is *extremely* squishy. Ran with an L37 Ice/SS last night on a boss farm and he was getting squished almost every pack with half the agro I was taking (I was on my L40 SD/DM Tanker).

One note I would make however ... Energy Absorbtion should be slotted with as much recharge and endMod as possible. You want that up as often as possible and would probably like a good return on it even if only grabbing one mob in its effect. Especially if you're going to be running CE and Icicles (the latter costing twice the former in endurance to run).

Yeah and definitely avoid Hand Clap in SS.

With Ice you shouldn't really need Taunt (especially if running CE and Icicles) but its handy to have if you're running full groups a lot (or just giggle when the stray Blaster keeps dropping ).

If you are going into the epic power pools, then Hurl is definitely skippable. If you're not, you're going to want that ranged attack. While the animation time is awful, remember that it does high damage (consider it a ranged Haymaker).

the biggest problem with ice/ss is rage drop.

During a rage drop you will have -9999% dam (temp and vet powers arent affected), which 'may' make aggro holding more difficult.

But the biggest problem is the -20% def drop. As an ice tanker, that will hurt (stacking rage can avoid the def drop, but not the -dam or endurance cost).

you can use hibernate before a drop to survive long encounters, pop 2 small purples, etc. This is more problematic on large difficult foes (arachnos) or long AV fights.

Not sure if you have experience with ice, but there are 2 foes that are problematic. crystal DE (due to their emitters) and rularuu eyeballs.

Fir bolg is the only other foe (due to fire attacks) that could be problematic in large groups.

Just from a game perspective

a few comments on your build:

1. you dont really need the ancients for recovery bonuses. stamina/EA your set. It doesnt hurt, but you can move those slots elsewhere

2. I HIGHLY recommend the res/def (3% global) IO. Its around 4-6 million (prices from 2 nights ago), and you can save a set of kinetic combat, which can be very expensive (and difficult to get).

3. your attacks are loosing damage to ED. I notice you have decent accuracy (if you slot rage with rech/to hit buffs (2 rech/tohit, 1 rech/tohit/end, 1 rech), you can max out at 28% TO HIT and recharge). If you get the global def IO, you can change otu one attack to optimize dam/rech/end/acc (or put a proc in it for extra damage goodness).

Remember, you can have 2 builds (if you wish), so you can have 2 concentrations, or just go one generic build for all situations.

The nice thing about ice/ss, you dont really need IO's, but it makes everything soooo much sweeter.

Bring plenty of Lucks during the early levels. If you don't want to bring plenty of Lucks, bring plenty of Awakens.

The beginning levels of an Ice Tank are a little painful. Your defenses aren't really solid for a while, and with the fantastically amazing Chilling Embrace you're going to be drawing a lot of hate that you'll need to figure out how to deal with.

Don't fret, though! Beginning levels for most Tankers are pretty rough, just because of the nature of the class. Once you grab some SOs, though, you'll be quite happy with your progression and survivability. And once you get Energy Absorption, you'll be loving life.

Replace Swift with Hurdle.

Hurdle and Combat Jumping is faster then Swift and Sprint.

Also gives you more maneuverability.

I saw Folonius' Ice/SS tank in full force; however he has it set up is the way you want it set up.

Devouring Earth are indeed a PITA, just like with every defense set.

The beginning levels of an Ice Tank are a little painful. Your defenses aren't really solid for a while, and with the fantastically amazing Chilling Embrace you're going to be drawing a lot of hate that you'll need to figure out how to deal with.

[/ QUOTE ]
If you mean specifically because of Chilling Embrace, I agree. I didn't take it until level 22 (i.e. once I had SO's).

If you're saying ice is bad at low levels in general, I have to disagree. The defense sets seem to work much better at low level than the resistance sets.

Can someone throw a build up of this set for fighting in Cim, I wanna tank the ITF.

Can anyone say offhand how much defense debuff resistance ice armor has? I know shield has plenty if you take the right powers (which I did). I plan to tank the ITF on my shield tank to get the costume parts. I have never taken my ice/SS into Cimerora and don't plan to.

FYI, while tanking the ITF on my invuln, I was monitoring base defense. They got me as low at -100% a couple of times.

According to mids' Ice gets about 52% defense debuff resistance.

I've an Ice/SS as well and he's a blast to play. I went for a quite offensive build because from previous experience with soft capped def (an SR scrapper) I knew I wouldn't need the Fighting pool for Tough. That's why I decided to skip the pool altogether because I didn't want two mules just to get Weave and the best thing about this maneuver was that it freed up three powers; just enough for Pyre Mastery.

So far I've been able to tank whatever thrown at me, including ITFs and Kahn TFs without deaths.

Here's the build:

But the big thing isn't Def Debuff Resistance. It's the Defense itself; I built my ice/SS to be at the soft cap without Energy Absorption and even when solo (playing +1/8) I always have at least 10x EA going and my Defense to S/L/E/N is typically nearly 60%.
