Fake DCs
Fake ones will have the countdown.
Real ones will just freeze in place, and then disappear without a countdown.

Ya ive seen people stuck in "Running Man" animations for a whole mission. I wouldnt have thought anything at first, but then i saw their toon do the level up animation a couple times.
I said something in chat. not 2 sec's later the player goes offline for real.
Weird and confusing, is this just coincidence, or can people fake dc's like this. Seems to happen quite alot.

I have also seen toons just disappear without a trace.
[/ QUOTE ] Usually, when you see this, the person logged back into their account (forcing the character offline) and you should see them come back on very shortly. If not, they either logged onto a different character, or their connection really is unstable and they were not able to finish the login process.
Ways to make it look like a DC:
- simply stand still for a minute and then log out (not during a mission or TF).
- open a second copy of the client and log in again (forcing the character offline).
- disconnect/reset your internet connection
- Control-Alt-Delete and "End Task" for CoX.

Fake ones will have the countdown.
[/ QUOTE ] Real ones can too (if the character is not inside a mission or on a TF) when the afk-timer is about to expire.

[/ QUOTE ] Logging into the account from a second client will do it too.
To answer the question: NO. There is no way to definitively tell.
I can think of a few ways:
unplug from the internet(cat5 or unplug the router)
Kill the process through task manager
Shut off the computer

I've had both accounts in when one mapserved out and before I could get to the login screen to get it back ingame, I watched it count off and out.
Don't forget to put yourself on /hide before a fake D/C or else they'll see you come back online.

If u fake DC in MA, wont the group see you come back on the team window?

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, but if you log back in with a different character, being hidden will prevent somebody from using /getglobalname to see what character you switched to.
Only if you log in the same toon.

Seconding this. I've seen real disconnects have a countdown.
Usually it's a long period of the person not moving at all, followed by the 30 second countdown and then they vanish.
I have no qualms with shutting down my process in a bad group. Getting out of the mission and never having to deal with them again is a boon in my book.
I'm pretty sure shutting down the process has no logout timer but I've never tested it.

[/ QUOTE ] If you shut down the process, the server would handle it the same way as if you crashed. The logout code is not sent to the server and the character will stand there until the standard afk timer logs it off.
I have seen many disconnects during mishes and always wondered how thy pull it off. Sometimes if you crash, the toon will freeze and see a timer count down to disconnect. I have also seen toons just disappear without a trace. Do they just quit the game to desktop or unplug the internet. Is there a way to tell a fake dc froma legit one?
