I had a third cousin who was also an Uncle of mine named Sherlock with a severe intestinal blockage issue. I am sure it wasn't the profanity but a very small population of people that were offended by this obviously Sherlock-biased comment.
Upon further review, this whole thread offends someone so
petitioned. Starting with this guy who we haven't seen on the threads here but sometimes comes to Triumph but decides to suddenly spawn and spout EULA verses from chapter Generic...trying to get hired on as the next Mod?...Look you sing the company line well but singers are arrogant. So...
petitioned.
The Rogue expansion is named after an X-Men character. So...
petitioned. Now known as Going Generic 19298 1938 1938 19288
And lastly, me. My attitude sucks worse than my Ninja/TA MM so...
self-petitioned.

It sounds like the interest on your side may be somewhat misguided, since it sounds like it's generated more by a desire to harm your fellow gamers than to protect the game.

I don't think you read my post at all. I've let many, many, many things go over the past 5 years I've been here. During my tenure, I've seen my share of Wolverine, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman and other "off color" named toons and did not report them.
Now, according to your response, people like this should be reported because they are "hurting the game". I'm sure to see "BangMeGood" and "D E A D P O O L" this evening in Atlas doing their usual AE PL begging, so I will be reporting them since I don't want to "hurt the game".
[/ QUOTE ]
And so you should. All players were asked to report such players a long while ago, after the Marvel suit. Is it the duty of all players to file petitions whenever they see this kind of ridiculousness? Of course not - this is after all a game and one that we pay to play. But for those players who choose to take an interest in the game's welfare and want to assist in keeping the violations under control, it's there.
Should you have been reporting all these people all this time? No, not necessarily. But they are violating the EULA and it certainly isn't immoral to report them as such. If you don't want to hurt the game, then just don't violate the EULA. If you want to help the game, petition the violators. If you just want to play, that's fine too.
If you have in fact been unjustly generic'd then you should be able to successfully appeal and overturn the decision. It's happened before. However, painting anyone and everyone who reports violators as malicious or petty is inaccurate to say the least. Some of us just care.
Also, I feel it important to reiterate again that people who petition as form of griefing against players they dislike are abusing that system and their petitions should, ideally, be disregarded by the GMs that receive them assuming the petition has no merit. I am not defending this behavior.

I understand your point of view and I do agree with the EULA. However, I don't agree that it should be taken literally and that every single thing needs to be petitioned. During the Marvel suit, blatantly obvious clones in name, power choices and costume design were the subject. They were obvious clones of existing copyrighted material and should be petitioned. Petitioning every single INV/SS tank with flight and laser beam eyes who remotely resemble the more famous of characters should not be.
Take a peek around the fan art forums here and at websites like MMO ART... are there similar characters to copyrighted material? Of course.
How many characters in this game are mutants who have a bio that says they attended Charles Xavier's school? How many were once part of the Justice League? Were recipients of the Super Soldier serum or something similar? Should they all be petitioned and banned too?
Furthermore, if I alone had to petition everyone who ever used a profanity during the course of gameplay, there would be no one left on this server. I don't need the EULA or a GM to take care of anything I find offensive in-game for me. I use the ignore feature if need be and turn off channels where stuff is said that I don't want to read.
Save the EULA and GM time for serious violations that are truly noteworthy and prevent people from enjoying the game.

Unfortunetly its people that DO report every small tiny rule copyright blah blah blah, that keeps the GMs busy, this is why it takes 2 and a half hours to get a gm to respond the the fact that a sybil is stuck under the floor, theyre investigating nit picking petitions.
Hope ya get your costume/name/ect. back, Imma be back round wensday i hope, lulz.
The same people that reported your toon are the same people that cried and complained about the AE release. They are sad, lonely people.
Most of them can be found in Super Wal-Marts after 10:30 p.m. Go ahead, your curiosity is up... go to Super Wal-Mart after 10:30 p.m. and take in a good eyefull. It's amazing. Then go up and take a census, asking them if they are involved in A) CoH Costume Copyright Infringement Busybody Activity, and/or B) Architect Non-Participation, but Wanna Complain About it Anyway Activity. What dribbles from their mouth will more than likely be interpreted as, "Yes."
You can further question them as to why, but their attention will already be on something shiny, and anything they may say wouldn't be understood anyway.
I enjoy playing the game way too much to worry about what another toon has as a costume. Good luck getting your favorite toon returned.

Since the introduction of i14, I've seen more than my fair share of Hulk, Wolverine, Deadpool, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and various other rip-offs in Atlas asking for PL farms in the AE. I've seen my share of "colorfully named" characters like "HooFlungPoo" and "BangMe"

Lol. I haven't petitioned anyone in a long time. Last time I did, was over some very racist remarks... nothing to do with costumes in some time now.
I just don't see how doing a rage-post about it will help anything. Not to mention that the vast majority of them I have run across, the originator was totally in the wrong. (I have yet to see any information about the character in question in this thread though).
That really sucks, Jade. I know exactly which toon it is, too. I'd petition and see what can be done.

Did they genericize all of the toon's costumes, or just a couple? It may be that it's an all or nothing action.
Regardless, sorry to hear that!

I normally hardly post on forums, just sit back and laugh at the insanity. But I find it hillarious Triumph can't find a lot of players to join our server. Yet whenever one of these crazy forum people from other servers sees an angry post they come to tell us how wrong we are. =P
On the topic at hand, I understand why the EULA is there, but there is too much self interpritation of what really is a "copy". There are dozens of people that have never picked up a comic book, so how would they know their character Songbird or Moonknight would be a copy. I think if it's blatant, stealing a name, taking their look, copying their bio. Understandble to report them. If your on a toon you've had forever, and as one of your five costumes you wanted to see how cool a Batman or Rorschach costume you could make, I hardly see a problem with that. So sorry to hear about your toon Shard, hope you get it back, cause I know you make your own toons.

I also know all of Shard's toons and none of them are petitionable for infringement IMO. What Cath posted is probably right. She has some cute macros set up on a couple of them that people probably took personally so they decided to be an [censored] and petition her.
Furthermore, Shard has done a lot for the Triumph community over the years. She's been one of many who help organize events, task forces and I have never once seen her badger any noob who asked a stupid question. Of course, if she made a blatant copy of something, then sure petition it. But she hasn't and if you want to see any of them, roll a toon on Triumph and get to know the person you are criticizing. Otherwise, shut your cakehole.
You may go back to your whatever server you hail from now.

Also to clarify, the person who submits a petition does not have to have any knowledge of what a copy or violation of the EULA is. That's the GMs role. If the GM makes a mistake, Email them and ask that it be corrected. But don't get all bent out of shape because a player was trying to help the game.
And like several others have said, there have been very few cases of Toons being generic'd that didn't deserve it. I'm not saying that this case wasn't one of them ... but unless someone can support the claim that it was unfair, I'd lean towards the position that this was a valid instance of genericing a character that was violating the EULA.

How about this. I'm pretty sure I know which character it was. There was no reason to generic it. It had a long-standing backstory that had nothing to do with any characters or intellectual property outside of City of Heroes.
While I don't necessarily think it was the best idea to rant about it on the boards, I also don't understand why someone that is unknown to this server would "champion" the cause of an obvious error (to Veterans on the server who actually know the player) so aggressively. Maybe you should check your motives, too. There's 1 character class not contained within the game that seems more suitable to you. At this point, since you have no personal connection with this situation, it would make sense for that character to crawl back under the bridge from whence it came.
Shard, just petition with the backstory of the character. It should get everything restored for you.

Obviously not since the toon has been restored (costumes and all) to all her former glory.
You may want to explore all the facts next time before jumping to conclusions about what is/is not a EULA violation and about players whom you know nothing about.

So your saying a person with no knowledge of what a violation of the EULA is should petition people when they have no idea why their petitioning? So....they don't need to have a merit to petition somebody since they don't know why their doing it? I better never log back on again in case I meet one of these people...

It's my understanding the game is rated "T" for Teen, so children should not be playing it.
There is also a reason for the /ignore feature and profanity filter. If you find this kind of thing offensive, ignore the person, turn on the filter and leave it on.
Someone standing in Atlas blatantly broadcasting profanities is one thing... once in a blue moon after a team wipe or something is another.
